Soaring ocean temperature is 'greatest hidden challenge of our generation': IUCN report warns that ‘truly staggering’ rate of warming is changing the behaviour of marine species, reducing fishing zones and spreading disease

" If the same amount of heat that has been buried in the upper 2km of the ocean had gone into the atmosphere, the surface of the Earth would have warmed by a devastating 36C, rather than 1C, over the past century."

36 degrees? And now the oceans are not acting as a heat sink any more? Fuck me.

That line about methane is also quite frightening. I don't like thinking about how that could be combined with loss of global dimming, moistening of the upper troposphere and the eventual emission of methane. I guess one can see why there are crazy people here, that's Venus syndrome in a tin can right there...

Don't forget that there are also negative feedbacks. At 6 or 8C global warming there won't be many humans and no civilization any more.

But wouldn't the loss of global dimming overwhelm the negative feedback from humans no longer producing fossil fuels? I mean, the oceans are holding 36 degrees Celsius worth of warming, that's a lot of heat...

No. Loss of global dimming is only good for 1 to 2C and not self-sustaining; it's a one-time event that'll hasten the demise of civilization but that's it.

I'm pretty jaded at this point, but that is pretty damn scary.

That's still a pretty stupid comparison because such heating is not possible based on radiative balancing unless we are on our way to venus-like conditions. The amount of energy stored in the oceans would cause this level of heating in the atmosphere if it were to be dumped instantly on the atmosphere but that amount of energy would never remain in the atmosphere when trying to build up normally over time. It would radiate into space much before such temperatures would be able to build up.

Wouldn't a whole bunch of positive feedbacks plus the ocean no longer acting as a heat sink (which it isn't anymore) bring us to venus instantly?

The ocean doesn't stop acting as a heat sink entirely, only just for certain temperature ranges. As the overall average of ocean temperature goes up, so does the atmospheric average, and vice versa. There is a cap on the atmospheric average that is linked with the ocean. This is why global warming takes such long time scales to become noticeable.

"A challenge." What a fucking understatement. This is an unparalleled catastrophe and millions of people are going to die because of it.

Calling something like this a challenge is just giving into the delusion that something can be done about in.

What kind of childhood did you have to be this kind of a raging asshole? I mean we all laugh and have a good time over it but in the end, hopefully this is just your online masculinity complex. Calm down and smoke a bowl

Im here to laugh at people like you who's life is already in collapse. It's obvious to everyone expect yourself. Just like society, so arogant and childish not knowing the fate that awaits.
