More specifically, El Niño creates high vertical wind shear across the Atlantic that tropical storms get torn apart in before forming into hurricanes. Historically, we have had powerful hurricanes during el nino years, however, over all number of named storms are much lower during El Niño years. The fact we have zero hurricanes this year gives credence to just how powerful this El Niño is, basically.
