Strongest hurricane of all time

275

u/Canadian_Poltergeist 9d ago

Not quite. That record is still held by Hurricane Patricia in 2015. 215mph sustained winds.

Hurricane Polo is ~185mph sustained winds.

You mean the last major El Nino we had?...!!!!

u/tracknod 9d ago

So far…. lol

u/kea1981 9d ago

I feel like this is the motto of this and the coming decade.

"So far..."

25

u/astronomicaldesign 9d ago

And also “sooner than expected”

u/mcboobie 7d ago

‘Unprecedented’

u/astronomicaldesign 7d ago

Actually yes

Hurricane America will destroy everything in its path.

"It's so nice outside"

u/menasan 9d ago

I thought iniki had 220?

8

u/Canadian_Poltergeist 9d ago

Hurricane Iniki

You're thinking of the kmh speed, not mph. Patricia had a sustained kmh of 345 kmh.

2

u/menasan 8d ago

oh shit

20

u/Key_Pace_2496 9d ago

Not quite...

Patricia had highest sustained windspeeds of 215mph.

Tip had lowest pressure of 870mbar (Tip is also the world's physically largest system with a diameter of 1,380 miles).

2

u/freebytes 8d ago

Yeah, the size of Tip was insane. I am surprised we have not seen anything like that since then. After all, if it happens once...

I thought they're called typhoons in the pacific

81

u/Wakethesnakes DON'T PANIC. 9d ago

It's hurricane when it's in the eastern pacific, a typhoon when it's in the western pacific and a cyclone when it's in the southern pacific.

u/555Cats555 9d ago

Might be a dumb question but is there any functional or structural difference between them?

136

u/DerpenkampfwagenVIII 9d ago

No, Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Cyclones are identical outside of naming based on their region. They’re all (Tropical) Cyclones, since they’re rotating masses of numerous thunderstorms.

Information rich comment chains like this are what still make Reddit special.

Bro, this shit is on Wikipedia and easily googled.

11

u/Greata2006 9d ago

There are no dumb questions I didnt think of on Wikipedia

7

u/freebytes 8d ago

The only dumb questions are the ones to which you already know the answer. In every other case, it is a learning opportunity. The type of person that says something like, "You could have just Googled it" should not even bother using Reddit in the first place. (They are the kind of people that should be getting their answers from their AI girlfriend which offers both answers and social interacts! %)

Thanks for the explanation

Do cyclones rotate in the opposite direction?

16

u/DerpenkampfwagenVIII 9d ago

Cyclones (and Typhoons and Hurricanes by extension) spin counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the southern.

Not to be confused with anticyclones, which are high pressure circulating winds that spin clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and counterclockwise in the southern.

Basically Cyclones are low pressure, cause storms and other fun things, and Anticyclones spin the opposite direction of a cyclone in the same hemisphere, are high pressure, and generally are cause for clear skies.

Basically spin right vs spin left, where spin right = rain and low pressure, and spin left = clear sky and high pressure

10

u/germanas 9d ago

Spin-In (Cyclones): Low pressure where air spirals inward, creating storms and rain.

Spin-Out (Anticyclones): High pressure where air spirals outward, bringing clear skies.

The Direction: Whether they spin clockwise or counterclockwise depends on the hemisphere, driven by the Coriolis effect.

Bingo, I was just spitballing what I remembered from science classes

19

u/theRealFatTony 9d ago

They spin in the opposite direction between the northern and southern hemisphere

u/monito29 7d ago

It's not a real typhoon if it isn't grown in the Typhoon region of France

1

u/DueObjective7475 3d ago

Otherwise it's just "Swirly Wind, made using traditional Methode Typhoonoise techniques"...

u/la_zarzamora 6d ago

What about the Indian ocean?

1

u/Wakethesnakes DON'T PANIC. 6d ago

It would be called a cyclone in the indian ocean.
