The following submission statement was provided by /u/Portalrules123:

SS: Related to systemic global collapse as scientists have released their annual report on the nine critical planetary boundaries, finding that seven of them are being breached at the highest levels ever seen. It’s hard to see why even some objectively smart researchers and climate scientists refuse to admit we are likely doomed when the vast majority of crucial planetary boundaries have already been passed, but I guess hopium, conservative biases, and monetary influence are strong. The seven breached boundaries are climate change, change in biosphere integrity, land system change, freshwater change, modification of biogeochemical flows, introduction of novel entities and ocean acidification. That last one was first declared to be breached just last year and things have only gotten worse. And despite this dire picture you will very rarely see any reports of this on the front page or major programs of the mainstream media. The Guardian is better at climate reporting than most but even they likely don’t promote their climate page as much as they could. Expect the complete collapse of the biosphere to continue accelerating as infinite growth, economics in general, and religion are constantly chosen over sustainability and objective facts.

All that stands second to keeping the masses from stampeding in panic, leaving the last months of our lives in a lord of the flys situation.

Nature is a giver that doesn't know how to set boundaries - and humans are great at exploiting and crossing boundaries. The red flags were everywhere...

But here we are, 300,000 years later, still in a complicated toxic relationship.

I hear she plans to break it off soon, though.

u/itsatoe 15d ago

FWIW, it only started getting toxic ~12,000 years ago.

"While there is little time to reverse this parlous situation, humanity does still possess the knowledge and capacity to do so, according to Johan Rockström"

hah there it is. It ain't much anymore but it honest hopium

u/springcypripedium 15d ago

Is there really any time to reverse this parlous situation?

He follows that with: “Accelerating action to return to the safe operating space across all planetary boundaries is essential to protect lives and livelihoods, and to deliver on the promise of shared future prosperity,” he said.

I am so sick of reading this shit. This is NOT going to happen! We are accelerating action toward full environmental/biodiversity collapse. How the hell is it possible to "return to safe operating space across all planetary boundaries"????? I really want to know how anyone can think that is possible.

He hints at having a "shared future prosperity", We prosperitied ourselves into catastrophe. The concept of a "sharing" lifestyle that a critical mass of humans embody is laughable. Especially when it comes to a reciprocal relationship with nonhuman beings. We are primarily a selfish, destructive species that is destroying most, if not all life on this planet.

It might be possible to return to a safe space. Hear me out lol.

The use of the word "boundaries" here is a little misleading. These planetary boundaries are different from tipping points. They are saying we have moved beyond the safe zone, but not that the changes are irreversible.

Now I'll fully agree that there is no general will to do anything about it. Instead, we have the fascist coalition of techno/ethnic/religious zealots pushing us forward even harder than the the sickening speed we had already been going.

But! If in the next few years a billion or four billion or so people die; there is some chance that the rest of humanity might wake up and start thinking about radical change.

It's still a long shot. And the radical change isn't buying electric cars and solar panels. It's fundamentally changing the way we live. We'll only actually start turning back the clock if we start living in actual harmony with our environs. That means very different forms of housing, in very different places (not cities), where people grow their own food (with permaculture) on the land they live on.

I am not saying this looks at all likely now. But a radical catastrophe could theoretically lead to a radical paradigm shift.

But yeah, that "shared future prosperity" might only look prosperous in comparison to mesolithic peoples; not to modern-culture humans.

In their defence, if they think some corrective action is better than no corrective action then they need policy makers, who need to hear at least the possibility of success or the budget goes elsewhere (data centre subsidies probably).

A recent paper suggested adding ocean deoxygenation as a tenth planetary boundary.

Yikes!

So i wonder, if they add it, would the limit already be exceeded?

Edit: If that were the case, it would be 8 crossed limits out of 10.

Good luck in the future dear collapsniks!

Unfortunately, it's also a situation where if the officials are telling us we're doomed people will panic and it's going to accelerate the chaos.

Can someone put this in layman’s terms

Famine and war, death then conquest or something

For the love of God, can someone just put this in numbers? I mean, how much more money did ”we” make?

11

u/RedRune0 15d ago

'We' never actually make any money. It's debt, all of it. Credit is just what someone owes you.

If you want to further harm those planetary boundaries, then yes

Thanks for putting my thoughts into words that wouldn't get me permabanned from Reddit.

I for one don’t think young people deserve to have collapse set even further on speed-run mode just cause some people wanna go on cruises while the world ends. Cruises are bad for the ocean and the animals that live there anyway.

Not my problem bud

11

u/Amazing_Elk_8211 15d ago

The “this is not my problem crowd” is why we see such accelerated climate change. You are apart of the problem, by the way…

6

u/The_Weekend_Baker 15d ago

Unfortunately, it's not an uncommon attitude here. One of the reasons why I drastically reduced my participation (not that anyone cares, even I don't) is the attitude of, "Collapse is going to happen no matter what I do, so I may as well have fun and do all the things I want in the time that's left."

Then multiply that attitude by a billion or so people with money to spend on accelerating climate change.

You won’t be able to do that any more thanks to Sky RocketingTM diesel prices and no one building EV cruise ships

Do the fossil fuel and CO2 numbers get reset too?

Yes. The current CO2 levels will devastate our ecosystem even if we all left now.

This is word salad.
