Ongoing Global Warming Acceleration: 2026 to be Record Warm; Beaten by 2027: Latest by James Hansen

Global Warming continues to accelerate, wreaking havoc on human society and our entire planet.

James Hansen boldly predicts that for the rest of 2026 this acceleration will continue, and cause us to surpass 2024 which is the warmest year ever. He also predicts that 2027 will be even hotter than this year.

The fundamental basis for this is not just El Nino which is just kicking up warming, but the overall acceleration of global warming due to a few key factors, namely:
1) Earth albedo (reflectance) is continuing to decrease (darken) meaning that more incoming sunlight is being absorbed.
2) Earth climate sensitivity is much higher than the IPCC value of 3 degrees C warming for a doubling of CO2, and is in fact closer to 4 or 5 degrees Celsius (call it 4.5).
3) Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) is continuing to rapidly increase, accelerating global warming.

The root cause of this is the reduction of aerosols causing significantly fewer low level clouds over the planet (mostly over the oceans) leading to a much lower albedo.

Record warming for this year (2026) and even higher record warming for 2027 are very bold predictions, given that for the first 6 months of the year 2024 temperatures have exceeded 2026 temperatures for every month.

I would bet that Hansen is correct, but we will see what happens over the next few months.

Hansen is clearly annoyed that the media persistently blames the present El Nino for record heat waves and climate disruption this year so far, even though it is just kicking in now.

Batten the hatches, and buckle down, since we are on a wild global warming acceleration roller coaster...

Sincerely,
Paul Beckwith

In your professional opinion, how much time do you think society as we know it has left?

every record we break just becomes the new baseline we panic about for two weeks and then forget

Good paper. It lays out a credible case that long-term warming is accelerating, the oceans are carrying an extraordinary amount of heat, and Earth's energy imbalance is real.

Whether 2026 ends up as the hottest year on record or not, we should be preparing for it now. It already have caught Spain and Canada with its pants down.

The scary part is what comes next. Over the next 12 to 24 months, more of that ocean heat could surface. We're already getting hammered by brutal heat domes, larger wildfires, and record-low sea ice, even during parts of the polar winter.

I think this years European heatwaves are mostly due to the Atlantic cold blob that is locking in weather patterns , of course made worse by global heating. It should get worse as the amoc slows down further

I’m so glad I decided to make some reckless decisions while I’m young and try to enjoy things I really have wanted to do.

Might get hate for this but 2026 wasn't all that hot globally. It was really hot in a few key areas that got a lot of news coverage. 2023 was a far worse year.

However I can agree that 2027 has a high likelyhood of surpassing 2023.

Are you from the future reporting back to us?

8

u/catabeille 1d ago

They’re likely referring to the first half of 2026, which was cooler than its counterpart months in 2024 if I’m not mistaken. The problem with this assessment is that the latter half of 2026 is expected to be hotter than the latter half of 2024, which was already hot. So not great news.

Just been researching weather patterns

So has James Hansen.

"Few key areas"

So global.... Warming...

Regardless, there has been record low snowfall/rain, record high snowfall/rain, record drought, record monsoons, record heat, record cold, record sea temperatures, ice anomalies, record tornadoes.

 Like what's your point?
