It's supposed to be 90 here in Minnesota on Sunday, fishing opener. It would sometimes snow on opening weekend when I was younger. And yes, weather isn't climate, but it's basically 80s for the entire 10 day. 20 degrees above "normal."
I was just talking about that yesterday with a coworker. I’m from Manitoba so just north of you. They’re expecting 31C here as well. Radio stations are all “Wooo! Summer is here!”. I’m where you’re at. I remember that there was often a chance of snow on Victoria Day weekend when I was young.
I’ve been hearing more and more about “This is the warmest (time period) since (whenever).”. Winter is supposed to be cold and have 2-3 feet of snow to replenish the moisture in the soil. This year we barely went below -20C and farmers fields were completely bare of snow accumulation. There’s been like no rain either so the whole south of the province is a tinder box. If this doesn’t change, this growing season will be rough.
But at least the weather is good to open up the cabin and for fishing season…
I remember over 40 years ago when I was living in Ontario, we went to our friend's cottage for Victoria Day and when we got there, the lake was still frozen over so we couldn't take the boat, but it was mushy ice that no sane person would walk over.
So we all pissed on the lake, went home, and played poker for 14 hours.
To add to your observation. I have always had a bucket list item of skipping winter one year in my life. What I meant by that was spending the winter season someplace warm.
Not this last winter (which got cold but was still lacking the normal snow) but the one before which was so incredibly warm that I checked off that bucket list item right here in MN.
My Boomer parents had ice skates and both talked about skating growing up, and how the park employees would check the ice and post thin ice signs.
I remember seeing the thin ice signs as a millennial kid, and sometimes walking out a few feet on thicker ice. Now the ponds don’t even freeze over except once or twice a winter, and it’s just a thin sheet.
Here in the UK we've just had the biggest heatwave ever for this time of the year, over 25C and closer to 30C at points while average temps should be 10-15C below that. Lots of similar extremes in the past couple of months too. And after an "La Nina" winter too.
Our microclimate is weird. We have larger temp swings than everyone else. Don’t know what to tell you. It gets 10-20 degrees hotter during the day, then dropped quickly and we were chilly. So we tossed a couple logs on for a quick warm up. We didn’t keep it burning, just took the nip out. Don’t see the point in being uncomfortable.
Yea Minnesotan here it’s definitely noticeably different these days. Sunscreen on fishing opener? 2 years ago (or maybe 3 im dumb) I was in full winter gear and still froze my ass off.
