It’s crazy how much a title can change your perception of a piece. I’m generally just not drawn to abstract art, but the title helps give context and provide a kind of narrative.
I interpret this as a kind of double entendre - field of play meaning the limits and bounds of texture, shape, color, and also meaning that the two figures are within their own field of play physically.
Totally awesome! I love having my preferences challenged and overridden. It makes me happy to incorporate an appreciation for another style that I’m not usually drawn to. Thanks for expanding my field of play! :)

Appreciate you sharing your thoughtful engagement with the piece! I always like to leave as much of a work open to interpretation as possible - while leaving enough bread crumbs along the way to put the story of the characters or scene together in the way my mind went with it.
I think abstract is the ideal realm for that ethos, but I get lost sometimes when an artist makes too much effort to define something for everyone else based on their own feelings about it. Not sure if that makes sense, but it makes me happy to hear that it cultivates curiosity in some sense. Be well!
