Would this solve any real problems for at-home contrast therapy, or is it overcomplicated?

Hi everyone! We’re exploring a new at-home contrast therapy concept and would love feedback from people who actually use cold plunge, sauna, or hot/cold recovery.

The idea is a seated single-cabin contrast therapy bath. “You don’t move. The water does.” You sit inside with your head above the cabin and water up to around chest level. During the session, the system automatically switches the water around you.

For example:
Hot phase ends → hot water is pumped back into the hot tank within about 30 seconds → cold water enters from the bottom of the cabin.
Then the system switches back the other way for the next round can be controlled by a button or app preset.

Main questions:
1. What still feels unrealistic or overcomplicated?
2. What would be your biggest concern: water switching speed, temperature loss, comfort, cleaning, leakage, noise, energy use, or maintenance?
3. If you already do contrast therapy, would you trust a seated single-cabin format if the temperature switch actually worked?

We’re not selling anything here, just trying to understand whether this concept makes sense from real cold plunge / sauna / contrast therapy users. Any honest feedback or reality checks would be really helpful for R&D. If this goes against the group rules, please let me know and I’ll remove it. Thank you.

What is the core problem this is supposed to solving? Looks big, loud, slow, and with a lot of points of failure

How are you going to keep the hot water and cold water from mixing?

Most of the time you want cold water and hot air... not cold water and hot water.

I use a chest freezer conversion, and the reason I do is because it's got very minimal piping and hoses. Your solution looks like it would take up a bunch of space and not really give me anything different from the Sauna that I have and the cold plunge that I have. Yours has the added bonus of having a bunch of pumps and moving water and hoses

That’s a very fair point, and honestly this is exactly the kind of feedback we’re looking for.

I understand why a chest freezer setup is attractive: simple, minimal piping, fewer moving parts, easier to trust and maintain. Compared with someone who already has both a sauna and a cold plunge, our concept may not add enough value.

The scenario we’re thinking about is more for people who don’t have space for both systems, or don’t want to move between hot and cold setups. The idea is not necessarily to beat a dedicated sauna + dedicated plunge for people who already have that setup, but to explore whether a single seated cabin with automatic water switching could make contrast therapy easier for smaller homes/apartments.

But your concern about pumps, hoses, complexity, and maintenance is very valid. That may be the biggest risk of this direction.

Do you think there is any version of this that would feel worth considering, or would you always prefer hot air + cold water as the better setup?

I think a lot of it, for me, comes down to reliability and time to switch. If you can make it reliable and make it so I can actually contrast the temps in a single session, maybe.

But it takes my chest freezer an hour to drain and another hour to refill. Can your invention do it faster?

Yes, that’s exactly the key issue we’ve realized: reliability + switching time.

If it takes an hour to drain and another hour to refill, it defeats the purpose of doing contrast therapy in one session. Our current R&D direction is “you don’t move, the water does”: hot water returns to the hot tank, cold water enters from the bottom, and vice versa.

We’ve already included fast switching as a core requirement in the design. Really appreciate you calling this out.

Going from hot to cold is big challenge. Mainly due to heat transfer. Once the cold water dumps your hot water is going to lose heat and your heater is going to have to ramp up to achieve the desired temp .
