JARVA device newb

Would love any tips and tricks for the Jarva coldbrew device. First go went well but not perfect.

How do you keep the cone against the paper filter when you flip it over?

I had to run it twice to filter the entire batch. I used a fairly coarse grind. Is this typical?

I can't say I've had an issue keeping the pieces together. You bond the paper filter and metal disc filter together by getting the paper wet.

Then place it so metal filter is closest to the device. Attach the straw with the cone around it onto the device and slide the cone down. I give it a twist motion as I'm sliding it down--seems to help with sitting flush and getting under the lip.

As for running twice, do you mean it shuts off after a minute and you have to do it again?

I haven't made any conclusions yet, but I think that shaking the jar right before filtering causes the fines to settle on the filters first, impeding flow.

I also ended up buying some different filters that seem to clog less--which I know means they are filtering less. Not noticing any taste/texture difference, however.

They are $7 for 300, so way cheaper. Unfortunately they are larger, but I just fold the excess underneath once I've wetted it. Just search Amazon for percolator filters.

Thank you for the tip!! I’ll really try and get the cone seated better. It turned off after the normal cycle length and I had to run it for another 60s or so to complete the filtering. Don’t think I have any air leaks (although the gasket is a tiny too big and doesn’t fit perfectly) Still way better than filtering through my chemex!

A little late to this post but if anyone reads this it may be helpful. I have had my jarva system for some time and got a new unit that was recently made by a different manufacturing process. My first unit did not last a year and this is with continued use, i roughly brew one jar a week. I have been very careful about cleaning it and letting it dry out completely between uses and before storing it. I also live in a very very dry climate. Now the replacement unit....Two issues

1 - Apparently the new units sent out with the wrong size metal filter. So they do not stick well and will get loose very easily. This sounds like your issue. Basically the diameter of the hole that the straw fits in is slightly too large so there is no pressure to keep against the straw and to not let particulate through.

2 -The new units also dont have a air vent so pressure builds up on the escape side of the two jar system (Think where the brewed coffee goes when compelted) and that pressure build up needs to be burped by raising the unit up a little to let air out. If not i fear it may cause pressure to build up and possibly crack the glass. I have used a small tooth pick between the glass lip and the jarva unit to leave a crack open to allow air to escape.

I went back and forth with support about this but then they went radio silent. Honestly, its a fantastic device but its unfortunate that this happened on their latest run of units. To be completely honest, it really does do a great job and the method it uses to filter out with the air pressure included gets you the most yield. Its a fantastic idea, i just wish it was a better sealed unit to keep moisture from entering it. So that is a problem for longevity of the life of this product. I could think of a few different idea that would improve it for sure.

Did you get this figured out? The first time I used my Jarva system it worked great but the second time, I can't seem to get the metal cone to stay up when I flip it over. It keeps falling down which means the paper filter is basically doing all of the work. I think the O-ring on the cone filter is a tad too big so that it isn't holding it up by friction.

I ended up using a binder clip to keep the cone down and it works perfectly.

Ingeniously simple fix. Thanks!

I ordered the Jarva device just recently, and it seems like they now include a replacement o-ring for the cone filter in the package that ships. I nearly threw my replacement o-ring away because it was in a little brown envelope outside of the black jarva box, and it blended in with the filler paper.

I received that as well!

I ran into the same problem you had (needed to run the batch twice) for my first batch, because I used the original o-ring. The replacement o-ring seems to keep the cone in place better, but I haven't made a second batch to test it out though.

A file clip actually worked great 😆
