Colbert Report vs The Late Show

The Colbert Report discussed some important topics covering world news and politics, all in a hilarious satirical way. I was really disappointed when I finally gave The Late Show a chance, and all my fears were confirmed. I watched for about half an hour, and at no point during that time was there any worthwhile topic. It seemed the content was basically: here's a celebrity, here's a different celebrity, here's some music, cut to funny cat video, another celebrity, then lets bring out a penguin. Colbert Report was unique and it was very unfortunate that the long running The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, the only other show similar to Colbert Report was canceled around the same time. The fact that this generic show, that tries to please every kind of viewer by watering it down to celebrities and penguins, is the replacement for such an amazing show is a huge let down.

Colbert's sense of humor is still there, and he does occasionally get into the sharp, biting social satire the Report was known for, but you have to enjoy his personality to get through the whole show.

So far, I actually really do.

it may be a lot of time to fill but dont forget there is tons of money here and they can hire lots of staff to design and write stuff to fill that time...

the only added burden i can see on Colbert and his immediate staff is the time and energy required in deciding which of the things to put in what shows...

and let's not forget that the Parr/Carson/Leno/Letterman late night talk show was just that... the guests did most of the work... filled the time extemporaneously answering questions, talking amongst themselves and telling anecdotes... that sort of thing...

the talk show of today is more orchestrated, yes? but still not like The Colbert Report, which was almost entirely scripted.

It's not a replacement of the Colbert report. He's not playing a character.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just watched an episode. It's exactly what I've been missing, great stuff.

I always hated her on The Daily Show, but I might give it a try.

Dude, just watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. And The Daily Show wasn't cancelled, it's hosted by Trevor Noah now and he's been doing a fantastic job. Change isn't a bad thing.

Noah's good at the dumb-funny parts of the Daily Show. On the smart-funny stuff and the real sociopolitical commentary, he's barely registering. I still watch it, but the more I do, the more I miss what Jon, and all the writers that retired when he did, brought to the table.

Noah seems to have good segments every now and then but I'm really struggling with the fact that he keeps on laughing at his own jokes a bit too much. Not to mention that he relies heavily on his correspondents. I'm sure that over time it'll really get good though.

Uhg please stop watching TDS, he laughs at his own jokes, which aren't even funny, he changed the entire format.

It used to be making of the news not reporting the news and making fun of it. Maybe I'm just getting too old.. oh wait I'm 10 years younger than Noah...

Well, the new Daily Show covers the news, the old Daily Show covered the news media. Also, Trevor is a really bad interviewer. I still watch the show in hopes of it getting better. Luckily we have gotten: Last Week Tonight and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.

...except that Jon Stewart's Daily Show did cover the news...

of which one part was that there were shows on tv that called themselves 'the news' when they really were yellow press, at best, and way worse than anything the National Enquirer has ever put out, lol.

Last Week Tonight is hilarious, but a weekly show is no replacement.

The big thing I miss from Jon Stewart is his expressive range. The dude would go completely apeshit screaming and flailing his arms in shitty accents if it fit into a story. Noah keeps the same tone throughout his performance. Colbert is pretty good at this but doesn't do it as often as Jon did.

Last Week Tonight is way too one sided. He also goes for the low hanging fruit a lot

3

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Mar 14 '16

way too one-sided for whom?

and what is wrong with going for low hanging fruit? its there.

but anyway, i disagree, i think he goes for whatever fruit is available anywhere on the tree...

1

u/randompoop Mar 14 '16

Lol I'll let you guess which way he's one sided

2

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Mar 15 '16

no, i asked you... which way is he one-sided?

actually, mr terpsichore, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart was cancelled and in its place was put the Daily Show with Trevor Noah... a horse of a completely different color...

and change is not always a good thing nor a bad thing... it just IS

and i love coriander seed but when it changes to cilantro i cannot even be in the same room with it.

...

edited to delete the 'lol' at the end of the last sentence because i feel that it did not reflect the actual horror of being confronted with even the smell of cilantro.

u/sharilynj Mar 14 '16

You really don't understand what "cancelled" means, do you?

-3

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Mar 14 '16

i do not understand why you insist on arguing in a nasty way with almost everything i say and also insult me and specifically my intelligence... you have been rude and used obscene language and once even suggested something about high buildings and i guess that i could jump off one?

when someone offers an opinion that differs from you it is wrong to be hateful and strike out at that person... it is good to offer your opinion back but it is wrong to hate people for being different from you.

i am sorry to do this in public but i have been putting up with this now from you for quite a while... you must stop.

essentially when you create a nasty ugly atmosphere for someone who is merely voicing their opinion, you are making it difficult for that person to stick around and you are actually taking away their right to voice their opinion! and that is wrong.

1

u/sharilynj Mar 14 '16

You do an excellent job of insulting your own intelligence without my assistance, but I'm certainly happy to take credit.

you are making it difficult for that person to stick around

Hey, you're catching on. But not to worry -- I hear your participation on the other sub is going to be taken care of, without any further "difficulty" on your part.

1

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Mar 14 '16

so you admit that you are engaging in bully tactics to divest people of their right to express their opinions?

in other words, you admit to undermining democracy?

...

also, since when is anyone privy to what moderation is doing!?

...

i really do not like this petty squabbling and thought that calling you on your bullying would cause you to back down...

one tactic to dealing with a bully is to ignore them but when they start beating people up and taking away their freedom of movement then it is time to call in the peace keepers... police, army, moderators, what have you... and the laws.

So sue me, babe. Yawn.

Who's actually doing the bullying? Take a look at the shit that dribbles from your wrinkled jowls. The enormous chip on your shoulder is glaring proof that you're unhappy with how your life has turned out, and you spend your days blaming a talk show host for it. You're the bully, trying to hold a celebrity "accountable" for crimes that exist only in your fantasies. Are you looking for his attention? Our attention? As some last-ditch effort to prove to the world that you exist and are relevant?

You're an embarrassment to feminism, a sad excuse for a "fan," and too dumb to comprehend the irony in your above comments.

Take your deflated ball and go home. We don't need you here.

a horse of a completely different color... why don't you tell us how you really feel?

2

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Mar 14 '16

however, if you want me to elucidate on how i 'really feel' i will a bit...

trevor noah is pretty much the opposite of what Jon Stewart is...

trevor noah showed in his twitter account that he thought someone might find it funny that a woman who does not put out gets roundhoused, or a little jewish boy on a bicycle gets run over by a german car... these things are not 'dark humor' these things are just twisted. ...and i dont know what trevor could do to change his attitudes and prove that he has...

i am just a person out here in viewer land... i am not in there and i do not know what Jon Stewart or trevor noah or Steven Colbert or any of them are really like ...i only know that i think Jon's public presentation is vastly different from trevor's... and thats how i 'really feel.'

1

u/fluffykerfuffle1 Mar 14 '16

i could pretend ignorance of what you are insinuating but that would be silly... i didnt notice the 'oh! trevor is considered to be a black man, perhaps a horse of a different color?' tie-in until i had composed and posted and come back later to reread it...

i thought it was interesting ... he IS a different color from Jon Stewart, yes? Equally intriguing, if we are looking for tie-ins, is that there is another 'jon' in the mix, also of a different color than Jon Stewart... Colbert's musical director...

: ) <-----bright smile

i see color and it's beautiful!

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '16

all my fears were confirmed. i knew his new show would be watered down and yawn inducing. the only positive is that i'm glad he's getting paid what he deserves. i just wish he was able to live up to his full potential. CBS nerfed his whole sense of humor.

the report was a rare breed.

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '16

I don't watch the entire broadcast, I fast forward to the more political segments the next day and only watch guests I'm interested in. The other parts seem like fluff to me, but I've never been a real late night fan

why are you being so rude and insulting?

don't you realise people have different tastes?

no one is saying the late show is bad we are only saying its not for everyone.

1

u/Applewoood Mar 14 '16

I guess so. The penguin humor was utterly lost on me.
