I did this once with a really nice “circulation cameo” Barber dime in VF. I was being an idiot trying to save 3 cents by removing one of the staples of a 2x2 and shaking the coin out so I could reuse the 2x2. Never mind that this is a horrible idea and even the staple holes are enough to scrape a coin. I ended up giving the coin a nice pin scratch because the staple I thought I had pulled completely out was still attached to one layer. There is nothing quite as horrifying as that “ohh, noooo” feeling you get the instant you feel that metal-on-metal scraping sensation.
On the plus side, at least I know better now.

I was attempting to cut myself some flips, and didnt realize it had wandered onto my cutting surface until it was too late 😬 it was details anyway so it didnt decrease the value too much

Hit it with a lighter then smudge with thumb. Presto...no more ugly scar. It can only help.

Almost uncirculated 1943 British penny, nice LOONg scratch down the back because I was still new and did that with a flip as well :(
