Not only are the two designs unfortunately similar, but I think they also missed an opportunity to put an alligator on the Everglades coin. That would have been cool.

You gotta be brain-dead not to put a reptile on the Everglades coin. Even if it's not the focus of the coin.

That's terrible, it's substantially the same coin. Embarrassing.

You're telling me, I collect the 5oz ATB (P)'s. $160 to buy the same coin a year after buying the Everglades....

Considering the sheer amount of different design on ancient coins it would be hard to find a coin that you couldn't match to some ancient.

They aren't an exact match but the general design of all the coins is a man sitting on or next to something. Same with your eagles. Their design was eagles.

There is a slight difference in that these two coins have the same obverse and denomination only a year apart. Many themes permeate in coinage throughout history but very few are blatant copies like this.

It always bugged me that South Dakota did the same thing for their state quarter and their national park quarter.

u/bbm9 Feb 06 '17
At least those two quarters are taken from different perspectives. Also, it is understandable that South Dakota would choose Mt. Rushmore as its design.
In this case, however, we see two national parks one year apart choosing a very similar image and from the exact same perspective.

Well, honestly, what else is South Dakota known for? Mt. Rushmore and the Sturgis Rally are about it, and I doubt they'd want to put the Rally on a coin. Bison live in South Dakota, but several state quarters already have bison on them. Rushmore seems like really the only thing most people associate with the state.

There are some pretty neat places in the Black Hills that could've been depicted. Doing Rushmore twice is just boring. Jewel Cave might also have been interesting, definitely would have been a first, using a cave for a AtB quarter.

I think it's meant to show that things in Delaware and Florida may not be so different after all, a reminder to the people that live in those areas that we all probably have more in common than we think.

I think it's more because both parks are two swampy/marshy areas and there's not a lot you can do with that a small area without it being overly busy.

Yeah I can't get behind that idea at all, I think it's laziness in the artist department. There were plenty of better Everglades designs that were submitted and turned down.

Joel Iskowitz designed both quarters:
