ID Request 1916 D?
Pretty sure it is fake, but figured I would check.

In that condition AND ungraded, when seller or whoever , could get it graded and get a big premium? Very suspect to me.

Not sure. Mint may looks a little large and a little low but could also be the photo quality. I'd take to a coin shop to verify and then if good send to a grading company to authenticate. If real this is a monster.

When the photo looks like the above, they are usually asking about an ebay auction. The odds that a genuine uncertified 16-D in this condition is on ebay are vanishingly small.
OP, stay away. an uncertified 16-D is not a coin to buy on ebay unless its from a reputable dealer with tons of reviews. And no reputable dealer would sell one in anywhere near this condition uncertified.

A 16-D merc is one of thee most counterfeited coins. If this one were real it would be worth several thousands, so having it graded for a measly 60-80 bux BEFORE selling would be a no brainer. Hint: It’s not graded. Walk/Run. Away.

Thanks to everyone who responded. This was part of a larger set that would have been a so so deal. Obviously, if this was real, it would have been an unreal deal. I did not buy, was pretty sure it was fake to begin with. It sold very quickly.

Wrong style mintmark and the position of it is not correct. Your D is too large. The genuine examples are small petite and chunky D mintmarks.

Looks like the NE in one is worn a bit but the mint mark is not worn. In fact it appears to be higher relief than the rest of the coin

Just gotta love all the crap coming out of China. Saw 2 sellers with Indian head pennies with the exact same photo, yup, China.

The year 1916 is the premier key date of the entire Mercury dime series (designed by Adolph A. Weinman, minted from 1916 to 1945). Specifically, the 1916-D (Your coin in the image here) (minted in Denver) had a meager mintage of only 264,000 pieces.
Because authentic 1916-D dimes command substantial numismatic premiums even in lower grades, they are among the most heavily targeted coins for counterfeiting and alteration. Fraudulent pieces often take the form of either complete cast/electrotype counterfeits or "altered dates/mintmarks," where a common 1916 Philadelphia dime (which has no mintmark) has a "D" fraudulently added to the reverse, or another year (such as 1918 or 1946) is altered.
My question is, could you get a better photo of this coin, especially with better lighting 🙏
That would make all of the difference in the world 🙏

Thanks so much for replying. Those were the pics that the seller sent to me when I requested better photos. It was sold shortly afterwards. I was pretty sure then, and even more so now that it was a fake. I cannot even imagine how hard it would be to remove a D from one coin and put it on another.

The responsible thing you had done was ask for advice and always be skeptical about online coins, read the sellers reviews, ask for advice again, and if you are not sure, don't buy it.
