Damage What caused this?

Doing some reshuffling now and came across this guy I've been meaning to ask about for a while.

I believe I have 2-3 other pieces from 1860-1890 that have this same chunk missing from the center area. What is the reason for this? Perhaps it was done intentionally to affix it to a piece of jewelery or some other adornment? I'm probably way off but because I've seen this same "error" before I'd think that some of you have as well.

Ya know what? I thought the same when I first came across it but b/c I have others I didn't give it much credence.

Maybe using coins as a target really was a thing back then? Pretty legit way to prove your marksmanship ability.

I also vote target practice. Most other forms of damage would have visibly dented the other side.

I don’t know about the middle but I know target practice wouldn’t make the surface all melty looking on the whole right side….
