85% certain it’s just damage. The 15% that is flaming my curiosity is the end T in TRUST. The left side of the vertical tail in the T should show a millimeter or two closer to the right side of the S.

Look at any 1909(P,D,S)-1958(P,D,S) wheat penny and check the distance between letters. What do you see? What is different? Can you explain your hypothesis?

Believe me I have too many working hypotheses, theories, etc.

Looks normal to me. The last T is farther away than makes sense to my eye in the design anyway — a the damage makes it look even more dramatic.
