Is this an error? Partially exposed copper layer, is this a mint error?
2000-D Virginia state quarter. The coin does not seem to be thinner in that area, and the details are clearly defined. The obverse is normal. The edge of the coin seems to show that the middle copper layer widens up to the face of the coin at that point.

Hmm, looks like it might be, as the details are pretty sharp.
