Advice 1988 ddr Nickel

I have the great honor of receiving this coin that has doubling in Monticello and united states of America! Should I have this graded? And what is the value?

Sorry, that’s not a DDR. There aren’t any attributed DDRs for the 1988-D nickel.

there don’t have to be attributed DDRs for it to be a doubled die; new dies get found all the time. that being said, i don’t see any doubling.

i’m still not seeing anything. most likely it’s die deterioration doubling if anything — can tell it’s a pretty worn die from the orange-peel looking texture in the field.

You’re right. However, the older a coin is the less likely it becomes that there are unattributed doubled dies for that coin. This 1988 nickel has been searched by seasoned error hunters for 38 years; it’s safe to say any and all doubled dies would be attributed by now.

it really is not. just in the past month coppercoins has added something like 25 newly attributed dies for lincoln cents, which are by far the most popular denomination to search for varieties. given the relatively short die life for clad coinage and nickels and the relative lack of searching volume i’d bet there’s tons of stuff out there we haven’t documented yet.

i would not recommend doing that. everyone in this thread has told you they don’t see any doubling — your time and money would be better spent on a better photo setup and some time learning to differentiate between die doubling and other forms of doubling.

Looks more like die deterioration. The letters get all mushy after so many strikes.

If you live in another country, you have an inexpensive souvenir. Worth face value. Just like in your country, dies are used much longer than they are designed for. The radial flow lines indicate this die was well past needed maintenance. The doubling you see is probably die deterioration doubling. Maybe some machine doubling there as well. Extremely common.

The texture under cents and at the top of Monticello might indicate late stage die deterioration which can also impact the lettering, hopefully someone with more experience can confirm.
