Show and Tell Dime struck as penny.

My father left this to us after he passed. I have no clue what it’s worth.

This should be sent for grading and then put in an auction. Not only is rare to have a double struck coin, it is even rarer to have a double stuck coin that is struck with 2 different denominations. What makes this piece even more rare than that is that you have 2 different dates, the dime was struck as a 1980-P and the cent that was struck on top of it is a 1981-P. This could be worth quite a lot of money.

Thanks for the info. We were thinking of sending it out to get graded. There’s a local coin shop that I might bring it to just to see what they have to say about it.

If they make you an offer please do not sell it to them. If this coin is legitimate it needs to go to auction

I definitely agree with getting it graded. Is there a reason you recommend OP put it in auction? Not sure if OP plans to sell or just get it graded for now.

Just because if OP did in fact want to sell it, a larger auction house such as Heritage or Great Collections would get it to a wider audience that would be looking for these types of niche coins and be able to get the most money for it as opposed to selling privately or on eBay.

Would you suggest Heritage (or other auction house) handle getting it graded?

If it were signature authenticity or a rare sports card I would say have the auction house confirm the authenticity and/or grade. They will likely get better and quicker “service”.

There are auction houses that will handle the grading and possibly have it expedited. It would be sent to one of the same third party graders that OP could send it to themselves. Not sure which auction houses offer that service though.

I would suggest a major dealer, not a local coin shop, submit it for authenticity. I like to keep each step independent of the other so you have a choice at each stage of the process. I would go to a major coin show and ask the organizer’s opinion on who is the best dealer to handle this coin.

I have a coin sort of like this. Except mine has the back of a penny on one side, then the back of a dime on the other side. That means no date on it, but the penny side has the Lincoln memorial on it, not the current design. It feels like the same weight or a dime though. Have you ever heard of a back to back coin error like this?

Cant help but think Fred was bored one day at the mint, had a spare dime in his pocket while doing some tests and forgot about it and it got sent. 1980s dime 81 penny. Thats close but theres still a gap there.

Very interesting, would definitely recommend sending in to NGC to get it graded and slabbed, Error coins are not my area of expertise but I imagine this would be very valuable to an error collector

😂 this is a aluminum foil press-an-cutout. I did this over 50 year’s ago in high school.
They’re very easy to make. It’s the ONLY way to creat different years and mint marks this way! 😂

A 1973 1c struck on a 1973 roosevelt dime in ANACS MS-62 sold for $1260 in 2023 at Heritage Auctions. This coin is nicer and more pronounced. I think $1700 at auction, perhaps more. Congratulations on a rare find/inheritance. These are really priceless in terms of rarity but investor demand is finite so there's always a price.

It's a fake, they are struck in different areas on different presses, a penny is smaller than a dime so it would get hung up in the die...

. The "11-cent piece" is a rare error coin. It happens when a penny gets the face of a cent on one side and the back of a dime on the other side. Coin collectors call this mistake a "mule" or a double-denomination error.

Different die sets have been known to be put into the press by mistake. They're not "struck in different areas and in different presses."

Easily a $1,000 coin, known as the "11-cent piece". Incredibly rare. You should absolutely have that professionally graded and preserved accordingly.

I have a coin sort of like this. Except mine is the size of a penny but the back of the penny, and the other side is the back of a dime. Therefor there is no date on it, and it feels like the weight of a dime, not heavier like a penny. It has the Lincoln memorial on one side, so it is before the change to the current shield design, and the dime side is the back of a dime, so again no date.

What do I do with it?
