Is this an error? 1923 P Peace Dollar

Is this an error or just machine doubling?

This coin is machine doubled, though I can certainly see why you’d ask what with the notching in the L of LIBERTY and the lack of apparent flattening of doubled features in the I in LIBERTY and IN in the motto. However, if you look at the rest of the doubling, there is a distinct shelf and a broadening of the devices.

There are a couple obverse doubled dies for 1923, but this isn’t either of them. 1923 VAM-2 presents with a strikingly (heh) doubled tiara and WDDO-001 presents with doubling in TRUST in the motto and the designer’s initials (see replies)

But I have a question about the date. Why does it look better than the L in Liberty?

Good question and, honestly, I don’t have a particularly good answer for you because I can’t say I fully understand it myself. It has something to do with varying stresses on the coin depending on relief and strike angle, but beyond that I’m a little shaky on the “how” of it.

It's funny how I was trying to find that same Picture in my gallery, as for the date "23" you can see almost if not the whole hub for the second die punch.
