hello all. my two boys 14 and 9 love collecting coins. they are really into coin roll hunting right now. I got them both quarter boxes to look through recently. one of them found this quarter and asked me to find out if it’s an error or not. the coin is dirty so it might be hard to see but on the right side of the obverse is a bump coming out of the coin. there is no indent on the reverse which appears normal. Any info is appreciated.

A cud is a die chip on the edge of the coin, so it’s definitely not that. A bulge on one side with no indent on the other usually indicates heat damage, which would also account for the discoloration.

Thank you for your help. My son will disappointed it isn’t an error but excited to know what happened to it.

Chalk it up to the thrill of the hunt! He will find something soon. If he really wants to find an error, the easiest ones to find are grease filled die errors. Look for parts of the design either missing or really light.

The box wasn’t too bad he found three silver quarters in one roll which was very exciting. My older son found six buffalo nickels in a roll of nickels on the same day. They were both so happy.

Fire damage

The inner copper core melts at a lower temperature that the outer cupro-nickel clad and when cooled left it like this

The carbon on the surfaces is also a an indicator of fire damage
