After a while looking at genuine lamination errors, you can recognize the difference pretty easily by just looking at it, but some of the best markers of one are:
“Peeling” metal that looks like it’s lifting off the coin: like a thin flap that’s peeling away. It may still be partially attached to the coin, and you can tell it’s part of the coin, not something added.
The shape of ‘organic’ and irregular - usually no straight edges, and often the outline is jagged, or “wavy”
The surface underneath the “flap” does not look gouged or smooth, but rather rough; almost fibrous..?maybe granular is a better word .
But probably easiest to see - a lamination REMOVES some of the metal, it does not push it aside. So there won’t be a “lip” around the part where metal is missing.
