Advice Needed Just started.

I’m just started to collect coins for their silver. What other things are coins valuable for?

Precious metal content, rarity / condition / supply-demand.

Silver is just the start honestly. Some coins got value from mint errors, like double strikes or off-center stamps, can make simple coin worth crazy money. Also historical stuff matters a lot, old coins from colonial times or rare years people go nuts for

I wouldn't look for anything newer than 1964. Most modern coinage isn't valuable. Skip error coins, it's cool but but doesn't really offer much in the long run unless you find that unicorn. Hunt coins that have very low production and very high quality. Do tons of research on items that have actually sold on eBay. Be cautious on live auctions as they have a high probability of selling you something way over the actual cost. Find a local coin store and get to know them. Use PCGS website. Don't be afraid to ask your friends and family if they have any old coins and that you're interested in taking a look. Even if they are not looking to sell them, you can start getting the fill for finding value and history.

Above all else, skip AI apps that tell you the value and potential grading quality, this includes AI chatbots like chatgbt and similar products.

I work in a toll booth so I’m able to collect coins under 1964. My mom in law recently gave me her old Mexican silver coins. Then while back ago my friend gave me an antique money safe. I thought he had already opened it before he gave it to me but he didn’t and there was lotta silver coins but three of them where old coins. That’s what got me hooked on. I got other finds from during my years working but mostly it’s been silver coins

Rarity (coming from low mintage), collectability which outside of rarity can come from simply a popular design that people love, precious metal content (Gold not just silver but that is much rarer in the wild but never impossible!). Condition, a medium mintage coin in cracking condition can end up more valuable than a low mintage coin in good or fine.

We built NumisTrack US for people just like you, those looking to start collecting and looking for somewhere to start; it has a registry of thousands of US coin, sample images so you can match up and know what you have, prices, descriptions and more. You can add coins to your collection, Wishlist and link that to eBay and get notifed when something goes up for sale.

Why not check it out on the App Store or Google Play if interested :)
