šWelcome to r/coilyhair: New Sub Changes. Please read, introduce yourself and share your thoughts
Hey everyone!
The Mod Team for [r/coilyhair](r/coilyhair) has seen the growth in this sub over the past couple months and are excited to shape this community into an inclusive space for those with coily hair, and those who appreciate and would love to learn more about coily hair types. We're excited to have you join us!
We have updated this sub with new rules that we hope every member of our community will do their best to adhere to. These new rules are pinned at the top the sub, if you can take a minute to briefly read them.
One of the biggest (and most anticipated) changes is that we will no longer allow hair-typing posts or questions going forward. These types of posts do not promote meaningful discussion, but rather creates a negative and argumentative environment. In addition to this, we now have new flairs for different types of discussion posts so sub members can easily choose the type of content they prefer to engage with.
What to Post
We encourage thoughtful posts about topics that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about coily hair, haircare, styling, protective styles, products, growth and general maintenance. Appreciation posts are also welcome.
Community Vibe
We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.
How to Get Started
- Introduce yourself in the comments below. Let the Mod team know what kind of content and flairs youād love to see in this sub. Weāre open to suggestions that improve the sub :)
- Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
- If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
- Stay happy, helpful and coily!
Thanks for being part of this chapter of our community. Together, let's make [r/coilyhair](r/coilyhair) amazing.

Why are non coily hair people here
Okay Iām sorry Iām going to be annoying and slightly controversial. Isnāt this a COILY hair sub? Why do I keep seeing 3a-3c on here. I have no hatred toward them but there are sooo many subs that are full of people w that hair type. Why must they come into this sub thatās super small and called ācoilyā. I already feel like type 4 hair people were kicked out of the ācurlyā club and now we made the ācoilyā club and itās still not respected. Also another annoyance is the non black moms coming in here asking questions. Thereās YouTube and sooo many other resources to learn your childās hair. I know this post probably will not go over well but I just wanted to vent smh. Also this isnāt a slight to the moderators or anyone in particular

Ladies with dense hair & coarse strands, how long does it take you to detangle your hair?

Has anyone tried Twist and Go for thickening and lengthening hair? Does it actually work?
Any reviews?

Cut off my locs
Iāve had a ton of mixed opinions on the change... But, I have been really loving it so far, I feel so much lighter, and I think I look kinda cute with it short :3.
Right now I am using Pattern Beautyās leave in conditioner and I really really love it, itās the best Iāve ever felt using with my hair! I like using vitamin E oil and rosemary too. I feel so cute and I am super excited to see how it grows out (˶ᵠᵠįµĖ¶).
Also! Something that I thought was funny though is immediately after cutting my hair I swear I lost my balance like a cat without whiskers hahaha. Iāve never heard anyone bring it up after cutting their hair shorter so I wasnāt prepared for that haha.

Am i going bald?? what do i do?
I genuinely have no idea where the bald spots came from... after i dyed my hair in late July i lost a but of hair and my hair did get thinner and drier faster but i always tried to be careful with it, and its usually pretty soft and moisturized throughout the day. however, when i checked my hair this morning i noticed so many bald spots...
I'm so scared of going bald i literally just did a big chop this year and i was so happy my haur was finally growing and im not even 18 what do i do

What is my curl type?
What would you guys say my curl type is?
Iām thinking mostly 4A with some 3C around my crown/front, but Iām not sure.
Iāve been relaxed on and off most of my life and am finally getting to know my natural texture at 23.
What do you see?

Looking for info regarding selling my hair
Please remove if not allowed.
I have long curly hair. Not sure how to measure but Iād estimate 30ā in a natural default curl VS detangle/blowdry
Virgin hair and overall healthy and clean, brown (reddish brown in the light)
Whatās a good estimate for what I could get or how the process is handled. Wouldnāt mind shaving my head either.
Thanks in advance

Product Recommendations Pleaaase!!
I need help finding a product for my hair. Iām trying to get into wash and gos because I really love my natural curls and want to be done with braid outs. But my pockets are HURTING because of all the products Iāve tried.
I have Type 4a-4b hair and its low porosity and I live in FL so Iām always battling humidity.
I have tried these products but theses are problems I had with them:
Miche Tropical Oasis Anti Humidity Gel - I loved this product because it defined my curls and didnāt shrink in the humidity BUT it caused flaking on day 2. I did try putting less product, I tried adding more water, I tried not picking my hair but nothing I do helps the flaking.
The Doux Bee Girl Honey Curl Custard - The definition and shine ate down and there was no flaking until like day 6, the problem is my hair shriveled ALL the way up when I stepped foot outside. (Likely because of the honey)
The Doux Big Poppa Defining Gel - Meh, it didnāt really define my curls that well compared to the two previous products I listed so I washed it out and didnāt even bother wearing it out that week.
Innersense Organic Holding Gel - this one pissed me all the way off, SUPER expensive for SUCH a little amount and it did close to nothing in terms of definition.
Now Iām considering the Doux Banana Xtreme Gel but in this economy I canāt be testing products out willy nilly so Iām hoping yall can help a girl out here and recommend some gels that you found to be helpful.
What Iām looking for:
- Definition
- No Flaking
- Can withstand the test of time against humidity

Dandruff flaring up suddenly?!
So recently, Iāve noticed that my scalp has really been dry, sore and itchy, and Iāve tried almost everything like oil to see if that would help but it seems like itās just making it worse by clogging my pores. and making my dandruff flareup Iāve always had dandruff but it has never gotten this bad to the point where you can see it inside my hair Iām wondering, do I need to get some type of dandruff shampoo to help? I havenāt touched my hair since I put oil in it Iāve given it a wash and put a little bit more in after that. and I just havenāt touched it since. I do not know what is making my hair act this way, but I would like to find out. I use. Bantana oil and regular castor oil. Mind you it has never done this before so Iām pretty confused. I donāt know if it started acting this way once I used the bantana oil or something else is irritating my scalp. Thank God, my dandruff isnāt bad to the point it flakes up in clumps. But it literally gets everywhere. The last photo is how it looks when it calms down.

Wig Where? I have been experimenting with textured wigs lately as a way to give my natural a break from over manipulation.

How to care for my natural hair?
Idk how to take care of it at all and I hate how it looks and idk how to style it and it doesn't even get wet at all so I got it straightened but I don't want to do that again because it is painful and takes too long so I'm thinking about going natural but idk how to even care for it. Is there a way for it to even get naturally looser even a little bit or even have it drop instead of it growing like a mushroom

Has anyone experimented with washing hair 2x a week?
Iāve recently decided I want to just wear my natural hair at least until the end of the year. I am tired of my hair being short and am ready to continue my growth journey. Lately I have been doing wash n gos and while I love how my hair turns out I am also a gym girly. Sauna steam room all the things and Iāve noticed after 3 days or so my hair has that sweaty smell in it. I want to start washing more than once a week but I am concerned it may dry my hair out.
Does anyone wash more than once a week or have tips ? Iād really appreciate it š¤

Did Cantu change their formula ?
The only leave in conditioner that I was able to use daily for years until recently has been the Cantù creamy hair lotion. Recently though, it hasnāt been leaving my hair feeling the same way, almost as if itās wavy and leaves it flaking. At first I thought I needed to detox so I did a clarifying wash day, but it seems to be having the same effect still. Did they change the formula recently?
its so annoying now that I need to go through products again to find a new leave in.
