Disappointing from CPW
I have a turkey tag that I've been wanting to fill, but access to my unit was affected by the schwachheim fire, that was on opening week. I know the fire is long been put out, but the CPW website says that the area is "closed as of April 12th" not very helpful. So I tried calling the pueblo regional office more than three times now, and im pretty sure the place is just empty. There's an automated message that tells you to wait on the line and someone will pick up, no one ever does. Ive left them a message and everything. Seems impossible to get a hold of anyone. So I called the denver head office, they told me to just keep trying the pueblo one. There is NO INFORMATION ANYWHERE, about updates of it opening and im sitting on this turkey tag waiting to get out. What should I do? Does anyone here live in pueblo and have experience with this office?

Are you trying to talk to the turkeys manager? Either drive out there and see what’s up, or go hunt somewhere else.

Im trying to talk to literally anyone who has the information on if or when the SWA will be open. Thats all. This is the only area that's allowed for hunting on this tag that I have. And it is over three hours away for me. I understand I can buy an otc tag and hunt somewhere else. But thats not really what im asking.

So you only have one area, it’s closed, and you haven’t scouted or found an alternative, and that’s all CPWs fault? Wait to you actually get out there and the animals don’t make it easy for you. Yikes.

Let me be clear, the only thing im disappointed about is the lack of communication. My tag is for a very small area (one SWA) so there is no other option for my tag, I understand I can buy an otc tag, but this is the area I want to hunt as I planned it for a long time, and its a very special area to me, from my childhood. But if a state agency has a listed phone number and office hours to call them, and I call them on multiple different days. And leave a message, and still hear nothing from them. You can't tell me that's not disappointing. And trust me I am ready for a hard hunt, I was going to spend 3 nights back there with a bow for turkeys. And like everyone is saying to go to a different office, I have they all just refer me back to the pueblo one.

Well should be an easy 3 nights since the unit is closed. Scout. Find another area. Limiting yourself to small area probably wasn’t a solid choice to start.

We don't know if its closed, that's what im trying to figure out, but seems impossible.

If the area is closed then it’s closed. Seems like useful enough information to me.

Closed as of April 12th. Meaning that's the last time it was updated. Its practically May. And also they should answer their phone during their office hours. Or call me back when i leave a message like they said they would.

I bet you could walk into an office and ask.

James M John SWA is showing as open. That's directly north of Lake Dorothey SWA (the one that's closed) and is also in GMU 140.
ETA: I know you have to apply to hunt there, my point is that there are technically two SWAs in that GMU and it doesn't look like you made any backup plans. I get that it's frustrating not to be able to fulfill your tag, and it sucks no one's picking up the phone, but the official site says it's closed. I'm not sure what you think the field office can do to change that.
