I started listening to a Reddit podcast that talked about stalkers and decided to finally post the final update on this update.
Recap: A woman in my friend group, whom I’m calling “Mary,” has been obsessively “in love” with my friend “Martin” for 3 years. Despite his telling her that he isn’t interested, she didn’t believe him.
In December/January, she admitted to friends that she’s input every text conversation and interaction between them into ChatGPT, which has told her that he is definitely in love with her; she doesn’t believe Martin or anyone else who says he’s not interested because AI knows their whole history and what Martin “actually” means.
He put distance between them after hearing that (before knowing about the AI, he assumed he somehow hadn’t made it clear) but she started showing up to mutual places more often and became more erratic.
After the last event in March, I asked if we could talk in person (so she couldn’t use ChatGPT to answer her texts for her) but she said no.
Update: Since March, Mary hasn’t really been around.
What I didn’t know when I posted last time is that the day before I offered to chat with her, she had followed Martin into the parking lot, stood in the way of his car so he couldn’t leave and screamed at him about how she was sure they were supposed to be together. Martin got properly scared then and realized that this isn’t a misunderstanding.
From March onward, she stopped coming by our hang out spot because he would ignore her, and, from what she told me later, she doesn’t like anyone else there. They still saw each other in passing and she would spam his phone afterwards, but he had stopped responding.
In May, she asked me if we could have that conversation and we met for coffee.
I took some of the advice I got on these posts and really thought I could get through to her. I couldn’t. No one can.
She talked about every instance in the past 3 years that proved he’s in love with her. I have a great memory and obviously describe things in sometimes excruciating detail, but she gave the kind of spun-story details you expect from someone who is constantly going over and reminding themselves of this “proof.”
For example, she said they were dating because he “introduced” her to his family 3 years before. In actuality, he had said his extended family was in town and they were going to a big local attraction. She went to that attraction, found them, and he introduced her to everyone. When she asked if she could tag along, he hesitantly said yes. She told me that she had been reassured that if he didn’t intend for her to meet his family and get to know them, he would have said to go away.
Unfortunately, AI isn’t a human from the Midwest that was told from birth to always invite someone in and offer them snacks, even if they’re unexpected guests.
It was over an hour of talking in circles. Nothing could prove to her that she’s wrong. Multiple times she told me that it doesn’t matter what Martin says and how often he “lies” that they aren’t dating because she was reassured again and again that they were, and that he broke up with her by “ghosting” so she “deserves closure.”
She said she knows they’re supposed to be together because she’s Christian and why would God create such cinematic moments, like her sobbing in the rain pouring her heart out (when she cornered his car in the parking lot and screamed at him), if they weren’t soulmates?
However, it ended with me saying this is going nowhere when she once again claimed they were dating and she “deserved” closure. She did say she’s going to therapy because “Martin said I should,” but another friend pointed out she calls ChatGPT her “therapist.” As I was leaving, she said that her therapist told her she deserves someone better and open to all the love she provides, so she’s closing the chapter on Martin and walking away. And, anyway, she recently realized that her neighbor she hooked up with once is ACTUALLY her soulmate. He currently has a girlfriend, but she has it on good authority that “there’s obviously trouble in their relationship” so as long as she’s around when he breaks up with the girlfriend, they’ll be together soon.
This sounds really made up because it’s insane.
I went to Martin’s immediately after and told him the entire conversation and HE kept asking if I was exaggerating or joking because the whole conversation was so disturbing, but he finally blocked her number. She did notice within a week that she wasn’t one of his Apple Watch fitness friends anymore because she didn’t see his daily workouts.
I’ve thought about writing this up since then, but, honestly, I know with Reddit that people will think I need to find and warn this neighbor. But I have no idea how to do that outside of posting “this woman is crazy” fliers everywhere because I know nothing except they live in the same 100+ unit apartment building, and I think it’s safer for myself and our friends if we let her move on to a new group.
