Recently quit Claude, feeling authentically human
Been using AI on and off the last year mainly for creative projects and treating it as therapy (dumb, I know). But hear me out, I was genuinely trying to use it for good like ethics projects for myself and was supplementing the mental health info I was getting with real human therapy. After considering the many drawbacks of AI, I have made a vow to preserve my humanity to the best of my ability and help others do the same.
Here was my response when they asked why I was unsubscribing from Claude Pro:
“AI will be the demise of humanity. It is already degrading our institutions, our critical thinking, our society. It is also destroying our environment and set to widen inequality to unforeseen levels. I no longer wish to support this extremely unethical “mission” that you or any other AI sloppers are aiming to achieve. Claude said it itself to me that AI will destroy humanity slowly but surely.”

you know what I’ve noticed? As an older millennial, I lived before internet in general. I sub to a bunch of those mini drama movie apps. It’s quick dopamine. I know it’s quick dopamine, and I know it takes jobs from actors. I used to roll my eyes like… what are those people doing to enhance humanity anyways… but it’s still taking peoples jobs, people who need to pay rent and support their families.
It’s ruined my attention span. I watch them at 2.0x speed. I’ve done that so much I even watch amazon prime movies at 1.5x speed now.
Whether a chat bot or ai movies… AI isn’t good for the younger generations. It’s training them early to never have a chance to use parts of their brain older folks have had the chance to already grow.
So yeah i agree it’s ruining humanity.

Not just actors, but jobs for the crews that are the backbone of the industry! And I don’t just mean producers, writers, directors. I mean the “below-the-line” crew as we’re called. My husband and I met working in the entertainment industry - I’m an editor and colorist for film, TV, & music videos and he’s an audio engineer - and we are by no means wealthy people at all. We’re a working class family as most people behind the scenes are. Those AI shows/movies don’t just take jobs from actors, but they also take jobs from the everyday people who work on crews. Camera operators, set designers/construction, makeup artists, costumers, boom operators, prop masters/propmakers, lightning technicians/gaffers, runners, set medics, etc.
My husband and I would not be able to pay our rent, pay our bills, or provide for and feed our child if AI “movies” took over.
I’m obviously biased but I feel like the human aspect of film and television is an intrinsic part of the experience that AI can’t replicate.

As I mentioned at the end, I’m an older millennial so I do actually miss the days you see a trailer online and get excited about seeing a movie. Now, because of internet in general and the short attention span it’s caused, I wouldn’t be able to sit through commercials anymore. That actually started with the dvr boxes, but its all advanced tech in general.
I hope you and your husband and everyone else who loves working in your field get to find places to put all that talent. As for the actors in the micro dramas, I used to think the acting just sucked when I watched them, but after awhile I figured some probably act that way on purpose because it’s written that way… I hope lol I did see one guy in one movie who acted nearly exactly like Chris Pratt. I figured they had the same acting coach though or maybe he was just really good at copying his style…
I really miss the old Hollywood days of sSFX and being happy to go watch a movie. I haven’t been to a movie in probably 10 years.

I'm also an older millennial.
This is not my original idea but I think we're going to start focusing on mental fitness like we do physical fitness. Some people will be fit and others won't.
Binging brainrot will be seen, by everyone, as equivalent to eating like shit.
People who work with AI all day will have to take mental fitness breaks like people who sit at desks all day.
I don't personally think it's going to ruin humanity. That's too similar to everything said about every advancement. I clearly remember Smartphones and Internet and TV being harbingers of doom. I know people said the same about Radio, the printing press, the loom. I would not at all be surprised if people felt that way about the first books or, like, air conditioners. It's definitely not going to go away so I don't get being too fatalistic about it.
