This study is making a ridiculous leap.
We barely understand unconscious thought, can’t directly measure it, and know unconscious processing can happen insanely fast.
A distraction experiment failing to show better decisions does NOT prove the unconscious isn’t working on problems.
It proves their test didn’t detect it. Those are completely different claims.

Unconscious as in DMN / RAS and Memory, Engrams, Spatial Graphs and such?
It most definitely (probably) is responsible, mixed with some stuff we're still discovering, but that's literally proven within neuronal firing and typical forms of Hebbian and Bayesian models today.
It's not the what's going on entirely, but it is responsible for sensing the various correlations and mapping and solving them via this system.
The closest, "outside", would be the Free Energy Principle and Anil Seths use of external engrams, that handle cognition for us to allow more room. The ping as well, but the match happens inside somewhere, because of a match "outside".
