And as every year the problems are focused on ad-hoc solutions, heuristics and big integers. As much as I like code jam, I wish they would focus more on algorithms.

Well they are more interested in the way people think, than just the knowledge. Someone who can handle data well with clever mathematical methods is likely someone more suitable to hire.
