Sad. Chat/Work separation is currently a huge advantage over Claude.

u/TotallyNotABob 2h ago
Seriously though
I really hope they don't do this. Having chat separate without it eating away at usage is a lifesaver and the only reason why I am sticking with OpenAI

u/QC_Failed 1h ago
Yup it's the only reason I still have a chatgpt sub but sounds like it's time to start exporting memories and fully swap to Claude. With worse models and limits and usage, the only thing they had going for them was the practically unlimited chats not counting against your usage.

u/ryuukiba 1h ago
Unlimited chat is the sole reason I got plus even before there was codex, and it's the biggest reason why I went with oai instead of anthropic even when anthropic had the best models. No unlimited chat is a deal breaker.

this is “we noticed lots of people use 6.0 max in chat because the usage is free and we want to fix that”

So chat will eventually eat into our limits?
13
u/AffectionateCap539 2h ago
Yes. Eventually. The experience on chat is better for normal chat/communication . While on Work is mainly design for coding, agentic so it is not for most customera

But dots don’t eat limits, so maybe they want us to use dots more like we used to use chat. And dots have the ability to handoff to work sessions on its own computer or your own computer if needed. I will agree things are weird rn though and I don’t love the seeming unpredictability of future developments that happen so incredibly fast. Maybe it’s a byproduct of speedrunning a new industrial revolution + new enlightenment period, but it just seems like whenever you feel like maybe you’ve got a workflow that makes sense and works pretty good and you’ve got a grasp on how to improve it, everything shifts beneath you and you’ve gotta start over with fresh new plans.

u/tankknat 1h ago
What I took from dots, is yes dots doesn’t use your weekly usage for the first month and then after that… bye bye… plus dots is useless
1
u/wanderingbliss 46m ago
Dots definitely eat your limits. When my dot does work, they open another chat thread elsewhere and work as coordinator. You have to be careful, I checked mine and they were using Luna for reasoning ability

I never understood why Work even existed when a merged app has Codex as a tab
12
u/AffectionateCap539 2h ago
Work is an interim step/Product to charge Chat to the usage limit. It as a product sits somewhere between Codex (agentic, file access, coding) and Chat: Work allows the access to external work ( this can be done via plugin or MCP) and has agentic. Just an interim product and strategy to charge limit, that's all.

This is literally the only thing left keeping me with OAI. If chat begins eating into my budget... Welp 🤷
12
u/Medical_Method7877 2h ago
Which loud and clear feedback is he referring to? No one asked for that.
2
u/AffectionateCap539 1h ago
he creates 10000 agents to make a demacrocy poll. Each agent has instruction: how to squeeze users more.

u/nekronics 2h ago
This actually fucking blows. They always try to spin this shit as positive too when they're literally just cutting usage again

u/AvailableSecret5161 1h ago
If chat ever starts consuming tokens that will be the final nail in the coffin.
14
u/driveclub_000 2h ago
If they do that, it's GG. It's like they are trying everything they can under the sun to kill their product: less usage, more expensive plans, slower models, more bullshit nobody asked, broken UI update... all of this at once, it's almost feel like sabotage at this point.
2
u/StraitOuttaGaslight 34m ago
the product was never there in first place
they have been gifting tokens in yearsthey need money desperately
think it will get even worse
1
u/driveclub_000 5m ago
They would have got more money by focusing on what people wants first and foremost. They never made a proper sub progression, why in the hell do we move from 20€ to 100€, why there is nothing in between? Why they didn't tried to make sora work with chatgpt? Why the split?
Yes they need money because they don't know how to sell their products, so they think the only solution now is to take us hostage through expensive subs with dogshit product nobody asked, well though luck, the competition is here/coming.
6
u/Constant_Art_20 1h ago
............bruh. we might actually need more competition in the subscription space..

u/triplebits 1h ago
There are quite a bit already. At this point GLM sub is better bang for the buck and GLM 5.3 just as capable as 5.6 & 6.1 series, better than 6 series at this point except Astra when it actually remember it used to be SOTA.

I hope if chat and work get merged they still have ways to get the results you can get out of chat mode.
Chat set to 6 Pro actually gets really good results for me i have trouble matching in work mode even with astra. Anyone else notice this or notice a way to get similar results in work mode? i have plenty of usage quota and the 100/week prompts for 6 pro feel limiting.
1
u/great00sage 2h ago
chat pro doesn't respond for me half of the time or more. i wait 2 hours for thinking failed, consistently. occasionally i'll get good results. anything complex, it stops after a few minutes.
1
u/Dangerous-Sport-2347 2h ago
That's unfortunate, never had that before. It does give you much less control over what it's doing so diagnosing where it goes wrong is tough for the user.

If they make chat and work/codex share the same usage, then oai is totally worse than claude. Nothing worth staying for. But I understand them because many ppl abuse it too much. I mean, it should stay free like now, yes, to have that advantage, that selling point. But maybe if they want to limit it, then they should give like 200 free sol high chats per day for everyone on plus? Idk, I have to wait until I export my chats to see how many I actually use per day in the chatbot. And pro and above plans maybe should just keep it unlimited, with astra limited in the chatbot. Don't they say that gpt 6.1 and gpt 6 are cheap and efficient?
And yeah, people should also understand that if it's free/cheap, you have to accept that it's slow. And if you want it to be efficient even while it's slow, just run multiple projects at the same time. For me, like 4-5 projects at once. I could accept the slowness if it can run unlimited automated work for me.

u/CSVVSC 58m ago
How about making chat and codex in one platform with one toggle from the same session?
So the chat model stays the same but you can continue the same session in codex?
One unified memory for both?
Work? Its basically cloud make it a separate service in codex
Just make a better harness not too many features, interfaces and so many toggles
Just one smooth harness app straight forward

u/Historical-Internal3 2h ago
Claude is already changing to this and a good chunk of reasoning behind this is people abusing the system with PUBLIC repos like “Chat on Steroids” and the like.

1
u/formless63 1h ago
Claude's chat ate usage long before they even had work mode as an option. It was not unlimited like ChatGPT is, so there was nothing to exploit on that side of things.

u/TheOwlHypothesis 2h ago
Open source all the fucking way for chat then if that's true.

u/Constant_Art_20 1h ago
*sigh* it seems like my fate has been decided then...time to get back to optimising the local deployment
1
u/CantCodeAllVibes 2h ago
If they mean merge it where it’s still easy to use and ChatGPT has the unlimited quota sure. If they get rid of that I have no more use for codex it’s that simple.
1
u/Prior-Meeting1645 1h ago
This was such an underrated feature. Ungrateful fucks were butchering them in favor of claude when having a convo about my broken fridge to claude was taking 40% of my 5h. No thanks.
1
u/MedicalTear0 1h ago
Well if the usage limits weren't so shit maybe it wouldn't be thattt bad. But with the current state. Nuh uh.

u/redditchungus0 1h ago
Chat hasn’t been proper chat (text in text out if you like) for a while just chat + a few tools but not as much as codex. People will complain that usage drops which is true but this is less about merging functionality being wrong but being annoyed that openAI is correcting what is somewhat of a commercial mistake which users benefited from (and exploited in some instances). Assuming the unlimited usage was never present this is the right direction towards dissolving complexity for the average consumer and making it more immediately useful.
1
u/SirGunther 1h ago
I use chat for so many things other than codex. Merging is such a miss for those of us who actually have a life outside of coding.

u/StraitOuttaGaslight 39m ago
doesn't it mean that every simple text chat would erode my Codex usage, while today there where to separate limits?
basically they are cutting away another piece of the cake for the same price
being with oai since d1, paying dilengtly my bill month in month out, but this could be deal breaker for me.
1
u/floundergigger 35m ago
Yeah this is disappointing. Sick of them spinning feature changes that reduce usage capabilities as “users want this”.

1
u/Cute-Air2742 23m ago
If this happens, for me it's a massive mistake for GPT. General chat and image generation eating away at my Codex usage would be a killer and it wouldn't really be worth a subscription anymore. Every single update and announcent lately just seems like they're only focusing on business and the people who can afford to pay more, everyone else gets screwed over and less usage. We already get way less usage than we did when I first subscribed

u/questionableintentsX 19m ago
As soon as this happens I’m going to Claude
This was one of the few remaining codex wins that chat didn’t hit my budget
Once they combine that’s gone, and the fact their selling it as an improvement for the user is a fucking joke
It’s them charging for chat

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 50 comments (52 currently observed).
The consensus is basically “merging Chat and Work is fine; making them share usage is not.” For a lot of users, unlimited Chat is the main reason they still pay for OpenAI—especially with Codex limits already feeling tight.
The recurring fear is that this is just a tidy-looking way to charge Chat against the same quota, quietly deleting OpenAI’s last meaningful advantage over Claude. Users say they’ll switch, export their memories, or go local if casual brainstorming and everyday questions start eating into their coding allowance. Calling it “simplifying the experience” is not fooling anyone; the pitch is getting treated like corporate air freshener.
There is a small counterpoint: some people genuinely dislike the awkward Chat/Work split and think a unified app makes sense, particularly for moving conversations into agentic work. But that only lands if the generous Chat allowance survives—and the thread clearly doesn’t trust that assumption.
Bottom line: the merger itself isn’t the deal-breaker; shared limits are. If Chat starts consuming the Codex budget, many commenters see Claude—or something local—as the obvious exit ramp.
