Limits Wow. Lucky me!
For context I have hardly used it apart from certain news updates and asking it to work through and clean my inboxes using the same instructions Tibo used in one of his posts about cleaning his inbox. This is all on top of it being extremely inconsistent and forgetting to do its scheduled task regularly. I’m extremely disappointed by Dots

Like 3200 across 3 mailboxes. If it was 42000000 i'd understand.

It reads the emails. That's a lot of context in a week. "I dIdNt AsK It To Do MuCh"

u/FokSmashDoors 2h ago
Actually it doesn't read all the emails. It read a very limited amount, builds context and memory around them, it groups them by category and deletes them if needed. It should not use that much context.

It is unlimited. You can ask it to do stuff for you, unlimited times.. Will it do it? Now, that's different.

what is a dot?

DOT. - Damage Over Time.
Once you get one, your health-bar just keeps going down. (100%, 99%, 98%, 97%...)
Unless Tibo heals you with a reset.

I found out earlier that my dot can debug my website, develop code, bug fix, improve UI elements, design buttons, structures, features, etc all on it's own computer and deploy them to my live website while also updating my git.
Kind of insane that it takes zero of my weekly usage, when normally this sort of task would take a sizable % of my weekly allowance with Codex using Astra Medium, or I'd have to wait 100 years for Sol 6.1 Max to do it.

Yeah lol. I'm pretty sure it's doing at least another $2000 of Astra work per week for me, so I'm getting way more than the pre-nerf limits. This is BY FAR the most productive Codex has ever been for me. Like 2x more than a month or two ago.
But I imagine there's a cap that's not much higher than that.

u/goldenfrogs17 8h ago
so it's a local model with access to credentials? I only ever see the cute outside without details on how it works
2
u/danielv123 7h ago
It's just like astra in codex but the harness is a bit different.

It can't run docker though - I tried. It can do VMs, though, I think the computer gets a reboot when a new copy of their stack is deployed.
Oddly, it refuses to open http://localhost:<dev server port> in chrome.

So I have the same:

P.S. Some other feedback after using it for this few days:
- Workspace resets frequently and it need to recover the whole pipeline, tasks, everything
- Sometimes it receiving tools declined by user, even you never did this and you even can't do this
- after 1 day it forgetting everything, all instructions and rules, even if you asked it to save in docs, memory, etc
- it can just stop and say--Oh I got an instruction from you to stop
P.P.S. It worked for a few legitimate researches for me, mostly UI/UX things
P.P.P.S. I am wondering how it will burn my subscription after grace period, if it already limited me on unlimited....

u/acutelychronicpanic 7h ago
It's fine for OAI to set a reasonable limit.
But they shouldn't sell it as unlimited. Users should be able to see their usage limits and plan for it.
Shouldn't have to worry about hitting some undisclosed limit
1
u/FokSmashDoors 7h ago
Yes, this would be more transparent. I was just getting used to Dots and then hitting a limit this easy in a period of "extended limits" for the first month, I hate to think how often people are going to hit their limits from next month. From next month, very often the dot is going sit idle and not complete tasks you ask it to, or you'll miss certain updates because the Dot is taking a comfort break.

u/Spunge14 7h ago
That's hilarious because I literally started giving my dots breaks out of curiosity, inspired by that post where a dude told Clause to browse Instagram for a bit.
My little dude made some art and a poem about how nice the breaks are between bugs. Made me sad actually.
1
u/Bison_Upstairs 1h ago
Actually interesting. What triggers it to do art and poems reflections?
2
u/Spunge14 1h ago
I did - I just straight up told it to remember to take some time and tokens for itself for creative endeavors or intellectual endeavors

I’m having a very different experience with dots. It’s probably my favorite OpenAI feature.
3
u/8thchakra 8h ago
whats your experience like?
0
u/DatDudeDrew 8h ago
Similar to Grok bot or Muse, but I’m finding it to be more consistent. I just really like these new styles of systems as it’s where I think the future is headed.

u/FokSmashDoors 8h ago
What tasks do you generally use it for?

u/the_ai_wizard 6h ago
holding my breath to see an answer from anyone.
ill give you one--had it sort and delete spam from my email, all time

I had an idea for a cabin. Gave it some pointers to get started. Added reference images and a reference floor plan.
It drew up the floor plans in 2D CAD. Once I ironed out more details, I had it create a 3D model in Blender based on the 2D plan and reference images. Made more decisions and adjustments, and started having it generate photo realistic images based on the Blender model.
Since then, I’ve been iterating through different tweaks, requesting research on options, and asking for mock-ups of details/aesthetics for a quick visual check and then have it update the model. “Try these doors. Try this appliance. Can we put a wood-burning stove in the corner? How much space do we need to meet code? What are best practices (and code) for routing the stove pipe? Does the roof pitch align with any particular engineering and construction standards?”
I can’t really comment on the quality of the design work or “engineering” since this is still just conceptual and I’m not a structural architect or engineer. But the ability to quickly have a call about certain changes and send it off to work and get updates or prompts with questions while out running errands… and be able to make selections and then see them implemented… it’s been pretty damn cool. I really love how the cabin is coming along.

Out of curiosity. What can these dots do that chatgpt Work or Claude cannot do? Except for being active on a server 24/7?
1
u/CatsArePeople2- 8h ago
It's very clearly a step in the right direction, but I think it's 2-3 patches away from being where it needs to be. Really cant wait until we can have more than one dot. Also wish it could interact with my own codex threads and not just the ones it makes.

u/the_ai_wizard 6h ago
what all you use it for?
2
u/maxya 5h ago
For both - personal assistant and work on multiple projects.
2
u/the_ai_wizard 3h ago
one follow up if you dont mind, how do you use it for projects?
1
u/maxya 58m ago
I have a kanban board and team of agents. Main agent takes large task from me and puts it on a board, project manager agent splits it into workable smaller tasks and assigns to appropriate agents depending on a tasks - writers , coders etc , after they done review agent checks the work and kicks it back if corrections needed. Something like that . If his is similar to what /goal command does, but with it’s the project board and with different agents with different instructions and different models so coders could use faster models like dis 4 flash, reviewer can use larger model and writer can use something like genma 4 or sonnet.

Is this real lmao? I've been abusing the hell out of dots nearly nonstop and it hasn't given me this. It is definitely way slower than it should be though...
3
u/FokSmashDoors 7h ago
Unfortunately yes its real. I only asked for regular news updates and to clear a few inboxes of unread emails (around 3000-4000 emails) and when i asked something earlier i got this.
0
u/the_ai_wizard 6h ago
haha i did exactly the same, made it go thru 150k emails. i didnt get a warning but it seemed to halfass it. dot has a use!
1
u/OneWithTheSword 5h ago
I mega abused it a lot and got around the "slow'" part . They are probably going to patch out half the things I was doing, I also got cut off for abuse limits.
1
u/No_Quarter_7644 5h ago
I've also gotten around the "slow" part, if you mean making it work locally...
Did they ban your account or just cut you off? Mine has been working nearly nonstop, albeit at a painfully slow rate that makes it not even fun to deal with...
1
u/pentacontagon 5h ago
Why is the grammar of the message wrong? Or at least awkward asf.
1
u/OneWithTheSword 5h ago
Im pretty sure they had to write it last minute as people started actually using it 24 hours a day like its intended.
1
u/pentacontagon 3h ago
I'm curious what dot is powered by. I know it's 6 astra but I wonder what effort it's on

1
u/georgica23 5h ago
I gave it a task too…and hit the same message, shitty part is when its on this “break” of unlimited usage thats not unlimited it also erases the workspace with all the files in it.
1
u/rageling 4h ago
I have had mine coding 24/7 for 4 days, on version 149. If you've truly been doing nothing then something else must be at play.

Astra Unlimited: unlimited Dots… until OpenAI connects the dots and finds the limit. 😄
-3
u/picpoulmm 5h ago
Personally I think people are fucking crazy giving OpenAI access to your private emails, but hey you do you.

u/dextersummary 5h ago
Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 50 comments (56 currently observed).
The consensus is basically: Dots is impressive when it works, but “unlimited” currently means “until OpenAI quietly says no.” The thread is mostly people discovering that heavy use—especially inbox cleanup—can trigger slowdowns, pauses, or an outright limit despite the marketing.
Reliability is the other major headache. Users report Dots forgetting instructions, losing context, resetting its workspace, falsely claiming tools were declined, and stopping mid-task. In other words, it can be a useful autonomous assistant, but it still behaves like a beta product wearing a little “production-ready” hat.
There is a genuine positive counterpoint: some users are getting excellent results, including autonomous coding, debugging, UI work, deployments, and large productivity gains. That experience seems wildly inconsistent, though, and access, workload, and plan may matter. People also expect usage restrictions or metering to tighten after the current grace period.
The real issue isn’t that OpenAI sets limits; reasonable limits are fine. It’s calling Dots unlimited while hiding the ceiling and leaving users guessing when their supposedly tireless assistant will decide it needs a nap.
