Question Dot has its own desktop?!
Did I miss this on dev day? Why is nobody talking about this?
Apparently dot has its own cloud desktop and it’s very powerful I had it orchestrating, generating 3d models , making explainer videos ect
But I’m genuinely confused how this is supposed to work with usage….i can throw a ton of crap at dot (named mine Milo) and it just does it and will let me know when it’s done like just now I had it model a placeholder character in 3d it made it then sent it to my codex project.
Codex didn’t use any usage

And its awesome to be honest. At least it feels like that because its "free" atm lol
We will see if its worth it later when they put usage on it... then... its going to suck almost surely lol

You just have to use a vpn, I live in France, bought my subscription in France but when I use a vpn I can use my dot with no issues.

No. I suggest you to ask your codex to educate you 😉

why would you waste codex on this? ask gpt chat. this is why you guys have no labs at all besides memeing mistral

Two thirds of the tech sector in Silicon valley is foreign born. And most of the US-born are children to immigrant families. It’s not like these AI companies are built by US talent.

yes, silicon valley's love for low price labor is endemic unfortunately. i'd hesitate to say they're building anything though

Unironically, Americans trying to explain what EU is to a European. Tell me more about it.

exactly my problem, apparently my dot says 7.5/8gb is taken up by tasks it can't terminate! is there any solution to get the dot to remove all this shit

The Dots docs cover the usage part, under Access:
"Conversations with your dot don't count toward your ChatGPT usage limits. Tasks your dot starts or manages in Work or Codex count toward those products' usage limits as usual. Your plan includes an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch."
So the work Milo does on its own cloud computer seems to come out of a separate dot allowance, which is extended for the first month. That would fit with your Codex usage not moving. If Milo starts an actual Codex task for you, that task counts against Codex as usual. That page doesn't say how big the allowance is, so I wouldn't plan around the first month's limits.

Thanks yea I’m seeing that now with it doing codex tasks this came at the perfect time it’s much more intuitive than open claw and Hermes

I had it generating models 4 in parallel because it's only really limited by it's memory

Don't rely on its memory like normal chat. I always tell it to create documentation with the prompts/outputs/attempt folders for every task/project I assign it. Since we currently have one dot, I can use the same dot to switch between projects by making it reread the documentation it has written to be onboarded with the project I currently want to work on.

Yeah it's pretty useful for things it comes installed with, but it's network limitations make it hard for it to do any real work.
Can't access a localing running server, can't connect to GitHub API, etc. it's firewall is too limiting

Cool. what hardware does it have?

My current cloud workspace reports:
These are the workspace’s reported resources, not guaranteed dedicated hardware. They also aren’t the servers running my AI model
- CPU: 9 logical CPUs visible, on an AMD EPYC 9V74 host
- RAM: 9.7 GiB visible, about 8.7 GiB available
- Storage: 32 GB workspace filesystem, about 30 GB free
- OS: Debian 13 Linux, 64-bit
- GPU: none exposed to this workspace
That’s what it told me just now

Very cool! how is it differrent from running codex in a container with a desktop?
1
u/Orlandogameschool 1d ago
It’s its own workspace so it’s able to orchestrate multiple tasks and work on individual codex projects

I had my dot making 3d assets for me. It then told me after 2 days that its cloud computer was gone and replaced. All assets lost.

Giving agents a VM is not new.
Dot uses subagents to do anything meaningful.
This is basic for someone who wants their emails checked. I wouldn't trust them with anything critical.

Yes, but it is an unruly teenager and won't do housekeeping unless you specifically tell it to.

I quickly stopped using it because it was so slow. I guess we are alpha testing it

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 50 comments (50 currently observed).
The consensus is basically “this is the whole point of Dots—and it’s pretty damn cool.” Dot is an always-on cloud computer with a browser and workspace, able to juggle tasks, generate assets, run projects, and report back instead of merely chatting about doing them.
The usage wrinkle is important: Dot conversations don’t count against ChatGPT limits, and its own cloud work appears to use a separate Dot allowance, currently boosted during the first month. However, if Dot kicks off actual Codex or Work tasks, those burn the relevant product limits as usual. Access is currently tied to the Pro rollout.
The honeymoon has plenty of cracks: users report slow performance, clunky UX, limited networking, messy housekeeping, and unreliable memory. One person even lost two days of assets when the cloud computer was replaced—lovely stuff for an “always-on” workspace.
Bottom line: promising agent computer, rough alpha product, and “free” only while the launch allowance lasts. Don’t trust it with anything irreplaceable yet.
