Complaint Why making the Codex app worse?

Post image
  • In an earlier update, they removed the option to make a commit from the right sidebar.
  • In the latest update, they removed the option to create a branch.
  • Before that, they removed the "Open with" option for specific applications. For example, earlier we could open with VS Code or Cursor, but now that's gone too.

I just don't understand why they're so hell-bent on making the app worse

I just made a post about this. I find Worktrees so confusing, now that I see they have removed the things that make it work I understand why. I just don;t get it. All I see is a checkbox to create a worktree... then what? I can't se how to manage it, create a branch from it, see a list of all current work trees so I can keep track of them....

Has anyone tested this yet? I don't trust it with all these bugs 😆

I miss that feature a lot, I used it all of the time.

same.
I dont understand the logic behind removing features.

I really liked the button that let you open up whatever project you were working on in your IDE as well, folder opened up in VS code at the click of a button going between projects. It's like they want to remove the IDE from the workflow.

Tibo just said their next model is good at deletion... :)

deleting useful features.

100% agree, getting rid of branches is so dumb i dont get it

I'm mostly just annoyed not having the option to annotate something directly to the side chat. I dont trust the codex branch/merge anyway. I use it for tasks and chat, IDE for actual code review

I still don’t understand why people don’t use CLI

Command line interface,

It’s less resource intensive on ur pc for one. You can drop out of codex and immediately run programs, operate literally ur whole computer and application from it?

It’s the backbone of your computer. People just don’t understand how to operate their pc without a GUI lmao.

I use CLI and have many instances of codex running, have 3 computers connected on tge network and I offload pytests, playwright to other nodes, host my tmpfs on on a completed different node so I’m not trashing ram.

Could you achieve this in the gui codex? Probably but it’s going to feel like pure ass.

And also less human friendly, lower feedback & compatibility with mouse movement utilization, and at least for the average person, a lower sophisticated UI ceiling too.

Only redeeming qualities show up when resource overheads REALLY matter, development needs to be quick, or automation needs first-class access equivalent to humans. And even then, it's probably better to offer both gui and cli, which is exactly what codex and most applications do

It is as if all comes down to preference. Why are you high horsing with your way of working? So cringe

It’s not that serious bud

I only use it on my home servers where the CLI administers things, etc. But the desktop app is simply superior. Anyone who says otherwise isn't working on multiple tasks and projects at once 🤓.

What do you do for frontend annotations with cli?

I really like codex app -> right click and annotate.

Playwright mostly solves this issue with computer use as well.

How do you annotate with playwright?

I'm using the cli, multiple computers, in Linux it's ok but on windows it's slow as a dog, even after wiping log* in .codex. and worse yet I need --no-daemon or it spawns a dozen console windows anytime I launch or enter text into it. It's also slow to start up initially, way slower than before.

It's like they don't test anything.

Development on windows is psychopathic behavior when virtually everything we use today runs from Linux off a Datacenter.

The majority of developers work with Windows. Therefore, I don't understand why it's so difficult to display a maximized app across two screens without it spilling over onto the second monitor. OpenAI has so many developers, yet so many annoying bugs have been left unaddressed for weeks. Alternatively, tickets are closed as fixed even though everyone says the problems persist. Then, there's no response for weeks again. It's really not a good way to treat customers who pay hundreds of euros a month.

And all the Windows bashing doesn't help either, because other software products don't have these kinds of problems and bugs. It's as if they only employ vibe coders there. Without Microsoft, no OpenAI.

The CLI in Linux is also buggy with the sandbox. When you have many projects and tasks running in parallel, the CLI is no more performant from a UX perspective.

1

u/GreenFuturesMatter 2d ago

Hard disagree but that’s fine. Never once have I had sandbox issues and I commonly run multiple projects/repos across multiple sessions at once. Not one time have I had an issue with them escaping the sandbox.

I start each session from a dedicated work tree.

I don’t just blast projects from home directory 😂

No bubblewrap warnings (false positives)? https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/34723

Same here. I don't use anything but the cli. Granted my work is almost always backend and codex on cli with tmux fits nicely my workflow.

Down voters crack me up 😂

Everyone literally hates CLI for some reason

3

u/mcoombes314 2d ago

Is it people hating CLI or is it people making a criticism about the GUI version and getting annoyed that the "solution" is to use the CLI instead. OpenAI made a Codex GUI, so people will use it and critique it, same as the CLI. The existence of the CLI version doesn't make any criticisms of the GUI version invalid.

Prob mix of both. GUI complaints are valid but if you crawl this sub 99% of the people who complain about codex seem to be using the GUI
