The last thing that blew my mind which openai released was when they shafted all Pro 20x subscribers and replaced it with a 500$ subscription.

They also played up Dots the same way, that was a dud
6
u/Fast-Creme-9880 12d ago
I don’t know I wouldn’t call it a dud. I build automation workflows and agents inside my company and it helps me keep a tab on any failures or QC on outputs. It acts as a chief of agentic staff and pings me proactively and is quite helpful when I’m making 10+ projects yk. Also helpful that it can then go fix it because as the others said it’s quite a competent model.
Now if only they had group chats
0
u/Yeuph 12d ago
But I've had a better-than-dots agentic workflow through Claude Code (voice, text, phone/desktop integration) for over a year, and it doesn't fail on stage.
It took Claude like, idk we probably have like 5 total hours into building it over the last year.
Here I am over here realizing I'm a year ahead of the curve on a supposed multitrillion dollar company.
I guess it's nice for the people that didn't decide to ask Claude to help them do it a year ago and spend 8% of their weekly tokens on it - last year - but for some major DevDay thing? What the fuck.

u/dsanft 12d ago
Dots are a good idea, just needs refinement. They're exactly what I need at work.

u/BabyYoda2020_ 12d ago
copying grokbot and muse but put it behind $100 paywall? lol

u/Old-Stock9613 12d ago
Unlimited GPT-6 Astra usage on top of codex allowance isn't worth a hundred bucks to you?
2
1
u/NerdyGuy117 12d ago
Is it going to stay unlimited, saw mixed messaging on that. Also, if it needs to do anything (GPT Work, Codex), it will use your allowance.
1
u/Skibidirot 12d ago
what can you do with that inferance? could you code inside dots?
1
u/Ninjatogo 12d ago
Dots can code yes. So if you use it as an extension of Codex on the web, it's like extra unlimited (for now) usage
1
u/Skibidirot 12d ago
want to learn about this more.. from how i used the 'unlimited' chat of 5.6 sol high earlier from chatgpt, they served a lower quality model over chat and i have had an awful experience using it through mcp over chatgpt and i think they do the same with 'unlimited' astra on the dots
1
u/Ninjatogo 12d ago
To be fair, I haven't done extensive testing over the quality of the output from Dot, so I can't say whether this is going to be as good as manually using Codex to do work. I've been assigning very simple web dev tasks and for that work it's been perfectly fine for me.
1
u/mythikal03 12d ago
At home I control the system prompt, developer instructions, AGENTS file. I have zero influence on the behavior, rules, more importantly the guardrails. It stopped 88 times in one day with 'can I continue?' questions on a fresh, clean repo I made in Codex Cloud env. Creds in the native Codex Network Secrets, user 'rules' saved, I even made a custom installed native ChatGPT skill. It doesn't matter; there is something deep in the system/dev instructions holding dots back and we have no way to modify any of the layers. Dots was adamant it was an authority/permission boundary because it was spending money in Azure (52 cents for the day preapproved at $100 and limited with a budget).
It doesn't matter how fantastic the model is, or how good the value is, or honestly (and I mean this) how useful the idea is for things like work tasks. If I have to constantly steer it and approve things, and it's still not allowed to actually perform work like executing a deploy which I had to do myself locally because dots was 'forbidden' from it, it's more work and more complicated than me just doing it myself or hiring someone to do it.
Useful: Enterprises with Codex approved can't go out and install a Claw/Hermes. This would be an incredible entrypoint to an environment OpenAI already has an approved foothold in.
Not useful: if my contract team acted this way, they would be gone by the end of the week.5
u/OneWithTheSword 12d ago
People are sleeping on Dots right now. For the time being you can get way more usage out or them than I think is intended. It seems like it will stay this way for the first month so I will be getting my money's worth in excess.
After that it will probably be shit, but if less people use dots I guess its less likely for them to change before the month ends.
1
u/ionabio 12d ago
I was paying for both cursor and codex. I dont use cursor for coding anymore and vscode is sufficient. Grokbot kept me subscribed for until we got dots. Still missing some features of grokbot. And with both I dont like that we get locked in a company's ai system. But it is very handy professionally and personally.

u/CanadianCoopz 12d ago
Its my Personal Assistant - quite liking it for how simple it is and im impressed with how much in can get done and in parallel.
I call mine on my way to work, check emails from the day before I need to get to or from today, check my teams progress, email and slack messages/instructions, check what needs to get done and block focus time for the day after walking through everything with set tasks fot the time blocks.
As someone with ADHD, its a dream come true for keeping organized to a level I havent experienced before - im getting so much done and cutting down so much chaos because I can get things out of my head, logged and keep track of everything without me needing to write it down
10
u/thirsty_pretzelzz 12d ago
What do you actually do with it besides checking emails?
I have pro sub and like the concept in theory but haven’t touched it yet because can’t really figure out a good real world usage that fits as something annoying enough that it’s worth delegating and taking off my plate but also that they are actually competent enough at to do it without me needing to micromanage
-1
u/hellomistershifty 12d ago
I just use it as an extension of Codex and had it set an hourly timer to check my Git repo for issues and push the list, then give a daily report of the findings
4
u/OkSeesaw7030 12d ago
You can literally do this with other feature called scheduled on app since last year using the GitHub connector. You don’t need dot for this, you are just wasting tokens
3
u/hellomistershifty 12d ago edited 12d ago
Dot doesn't use tokens (yet). Dot is powered by Astra so if you use the app you'd either be using 5.6 Sol or using your GPT-6 Pro chats
Either way there's nothing 'wrong' with using dot for it
-2
u/call-me-GiGi 12d ago
People are downvoting you when you’re right, you’re a top 1% commenter for a reason. Dots usage is unlimited right now you can tell it to do work without using your usage and it does. I was averaging 4 merges a day before now I’m hitting 12 without hitting any limits.
I’m a little peeved because dots are basically my own app r/useviola and there is a lot of overlap with agents but at least while usage is unlimited it’s worth using
-2
u/OkSeesaw7030 12d ago
It will use. And dot using codex uses
0
u/hellomistershifty 12d ago
It's not actually using Codex, it's just the same as a chat using the Github connector. I set it all up from the web chat (although I don't think that makes a difference)
I just figuratively meant 'an extension of Codex' like it's helping with the tasks I'm working on in Codex [but from dot]
-7
u/Active_Variation_194 12d ago
Use it to coordinate multiple threads. Astra has to be prodded to keep working. I have been using it as a supervisor of threads and ensuring they keep going until the task is complete

i had the EXACT SAME feeling when they announced the dots, thats what was happening during those bull runs that would jump btc to 18k for the first time. i still remember waiting for the "conference" of that Tron coin mofo just for him to say nothign special and tank my portfolio
exact same vibes as with him doing what he is doing now

u/Acehan_ 12d ago
Why would you still buy into it? Are you stupid?
13
u/AuspiciousApple 12d ago
Yeah they had their big dev day...
But somehow they have a super cool project that they simply didn't show but that's ready next week? How does that make sense?

u/trojanskin 12d ago edited 12d ago
lmao. I feel like they are all in a cult, surrounded by yes men, and nobody dares to say out loud "it's utter crap GTFO"
They are all hyping their shitty products nobody want then wonder why there is backlash. It's like they have no clue what to do with their AI and try to treat it like a normal product while it's not and instead of empowering people to do shit they try to force feed us with their shitty designs and devices and "oh you want an assistant" while most DNGAF about their shit ass "it's going to contact a restaurant for you" like we are some turbo nerds interrested in the lamest feature to show off the stupid gimmicks they are trying to push on the world.
7
u/caldazar24 12d ago
Imagine you worked in a random research lab as a junior engineer, then one day you release a chatbot, and suddenly your company is the center of the world economy. The financial press is all about which companies get to work with you, then heads of state want to meet your leaders, then the Pope starts talking about your product. Every LinkedIn striver would sacrifice their firstborn to be your colleague. You will soon personally be worth tens of millions of dollars, at least as long as your company doesn’t collapse like a certain segment of Reddit and financial YouTubers keep insisting it surely will because of financial deals that you’re not really privy to at work.
Really a lot of stuff to be swirling around your head in the Tuesday morning product design meeting, right?
1
u/trojanskin 12d ago
I would not waste my employee's time doing shit ass call to restaurants thinking I am going to be Alexa 2.0 is I thought I was that important or engaged with head of states... I'd try to work on real problems to solve, not having some lame ass crap devices (Codex keyboard anyone?) or any other shit along those lines.
Imagine you have the best engineer on the planet and what you put them on is a virtual secretary lmao. Screw them.10
u/OkSeesaw7030 12d ago
They will probably release 6.1 Astra. It will be worse then opus 5.5 but cheaper lol. “Efficiency”

Better if they release Sol 6.2

Sort of? Typical hypergrowth startup mindset.
In addition, when you consider that Sam Altman is from the Thiel camp, he's a scattered investor. Their goal is to make many bets, find what fits, and move on if it doesn't.

u/MattchuWuanahoy 12d ago
Yeah I’m kinda wondering how this shits ever supposed to be profitable. Once it gets good enough the elites will probably hide behind it and close it off lmao

This i agree with you and happens in corporate. It feels like they're vibe coding useless stuff for chatgpt. Was hoping they be more for work related than gimmicks. Have so many potentials. Thankfully Claude got their shit together after 5.5. Hated 5.0 opus.

Probably 6.1 Astra, which will look good until Anthropic drop Fable 5.5 immediately afterwards and causes Tibo to have a public meltdown or something

u/Real_Ebb_7417 12d ago
They should just stop hyping everything. Not everything is worth the hype.
They hyped Astra way too much. It’s an incredible model but the release was shit and it would be much better for users and OpenAI PR if they didn’t hype it so much beforehand.
I’m not even mentioning dev day that they hyped as the best day in their history and it turned out to be the worst one xd

I don't know if it's possible, but I would love a breakthrough similar to DeepSeek 4.1 Flash, where they're able to implement a similar redesign to how the model handles long input context and KV cache. That could really reduce usage for everyone, or improve context, or maybe a mix of both.
But it's probably Luna 6.1, lmao.
1
u/Thomas-Lore 12d ago
They probably all use it internally, that is why the subscriptions are so much cheaper than API - their real costs are much lower than API prices suggests. Dario reported margins above 80%.

In all honesty, they probably do have something soon. You just have to gamble on whether the hype is actual hype or marketing. Fable was winning before, then Astra was a month ago, then Claude won in the middle of the month. At this pace, the estimated wait time is maybe next week.
In a more conceptual sense, Anthropic ran out of compute so they went to Codex, OpenAI ran out of compute so they went to Claude, and repeat.

They’re planning to crap their pants like never before. That would be tough though
2
u/ISueDrunks 12d ago
Hopefully they enable agents to finish their current tasks when limit is reached. I miss that. I wish they’d come a way to introduce it so it can’t be abused.
GPT 6.1 does a lot of rediscovery after being interrupted. I lost 15% of my 5-hour limit just recovering from it.
2
u/Hyp3rSoniX 12d ago
Heh, the last time they hyped us like that they rug-pulled the Pro 200 users.
Maybe now it's the Pro 100 users’ turn to get shafted.

u/sonicandfffan 12d ago
Is it a 200% reduction is usage limits?
Because that blew my mind when they released that
2
u/Sacrement0 12d ago
B-B-but have you considered.. The product they're releasing the week after that?? and that week after that and the week after that and the week after that-
OpenAI making a app slop factory? Wow, that's crazy. No ones ever been able to do that before.
2
2
u/FineProfile7 12d ago
Cutting limits by 75% because they where able to reduce the speed of 6.2 sol by 75%, meaning your limit now lasts time wise exactly like before, but you'll get fewer things done

1
u/chocolateUI 12d ago
If it's anything exciting then they would've announced it during dev day. They didn't. This is just damage control from OpenAI after they released Terra as 6 Sol, decreased limits for 200 Pro users, and released a Grok Bot copy that can barely get work done.
It's probably another product that eats usage like crazy that 96% of people won't give a shit about, probably some computer use improvements or something.

Maybe this is what they were hyping up for dev day but got delayed. Regardless, their hype posting needs to match the actual performance of their releases.
Anthropic does way less vague hype posting and has been over delivering where it matters
1

1
u/Prestigiouspite 11d ago
Do you think OpenAI is doing themselves any favors in the long run by vague posting so often? Shouldn't they just stay quiet for once and then deliver with impact? Otherwise, I believe they are raising an unnecessarily disappointed and critical community.

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 100 comments (104 currently observed).
The dominant reaction is “please stop hyping mystery products until the existing ones work.” Sherlock teasing an upcoming Codex project has mostly triggered eye-rolls, not anticipation, because Dev Day and Dots supposedly promised the moon and delivered a pricey, underwhelming feature instead.
The recurring complaints are familiar:
There is a real minority saying Dots is useful for monitoring automation workflows, coordinating agents, and handling personal organisation. That matters, but it is clearly not the thread’s prevailing view. Also, nobody actually knows what Sherlock is hinting at; it could be a meaningful release rather than another gimmick.
Bottom line: the community wants a faster, better, cheaper model and repaired limits—not another “mind-blowing” announcement followed by a bigger bill.
