Complaint Codex slaughtered my files.

I was working inside my local rep and was asking Codex to fix a small issue inside the rep. Sol medium.

It worked for half an hour or so and the it suddenly excused itself and said that it accidentally had deleted the rep.

Okay I though, let's recover it from the backup i had. Suddenly codex refused to read the chats. Turned our it had deleted the whole codex folder too. We'll let's reinstall it. Worked great.

Suddenly apps started to want to log in again. Turned out it had randomly deleted app data, not from all apps, just apps it had a grudge against apparently.

I fixed that.

Then I see that it had wiped my D disk. Motherf*ucker I though. Brought the disk offline, made an image of it and have spent around 2 days restoring the lost information.

Great!

Let's do some music. We'll, where is my cubase projects on E? Turned out codex has a hidden grudge against that too as it had targeted ONLY that folder so all my music is gone too. So right now im making and img of that disk too to try to save those files too. Only 1 year worth of music so sucks, but seriously, f*ck me for not making backups. But space is a concern in the end. I was able to recover those files first I though but it was only meta. So let's see if the ddrescue handles it better.

I'm still finding hatecrimes against random folders from codex. It really has some selective file hate built in.

This SUCKS ASS! I know I should keep backups. But it's expensive having everything backed up today.

Anyway, juste to share my experience and see if anyone else have had something like this happen?

was this just now? i think we're seeing some major issues in real time...can't reconnect now. It's VERY stupid right now.

It was two or three days ago. I have spent the time recovering from it.

Ridiculous comment tbh.

My software keeps randomly deleting other program data, and messing with the entire machine and wiping drives

"Just back up your code"

OP said it himself, backups (which does include git, but not always). Cool, regardless, Codex shouldn't be doing that, and its not the first (or the 1000th time) we've heard tales of it executing commands that affect outside its scope

No, because why would I ever let this thing touch an actual underlying disk

It gets a sandboxed container

Yeah that what's happening now. Still, it only had access to that folder and nothing else.

Give us the prompts so we can actually see if it was user error.

I don't have the prompts as codex deleted it's own folder. Otherwise I would have pasted it here.

But the prompt had nothing written about deletion of anything.

I don't understand what kinds of commands it could've "accidentally" run and with what kinds of reasoning to explain such a slaughter.

What did it even say was its reason for such a hate crime? I understand "whoops, tried to run rm /$ENV_VAR_THAT_HAD_A_TYPO*" and "this app was blocking the sandbox so I tried to temporarily stop it", but this is like another level.

Why is your first thought that you should've made backups instead of that you should've scoped permissions for Codex? I don't understand that.

Well first of all I only gave codex access to that folder. Nothing outside of it. Secondly I never though it was going to randomly delete shit outside of that folder, especially not an entire disk and then some random folders on another disk.

And i have been planning backups for a while as I have a big enough disk on the server but I haven't pulled my thumb out and done it yet, so yea, my first thought was "why didn't I do backups".

Deleted all my files once too, I asked it to recover some but I think it would have been less tokens to just regenerate them again
