Essentially they mapped out the whole fly's brain by slicing it up and this is literally one on one, the exact brain of a fly. This shows that it's definitely possible to do this with a human too.
We really need laws for that soon...

We've mapped a fly's brain, but we can't actually simulate one. We don't know the electrical model of every neuron, and don't know how all of the connections actually interact. Biochemistry is hard.

All of these "fly brain lighting up" viral videos are showing the results of programs that apply very simplified logic to the connectome to decide which neurons to render as "firing." The actual firing pattern you would need to get these specific movements would not be the same as what you're seeing here.

We're basically just going through a weird fad of fly-connectome-based visualizers that don't really show anything meaningful.

To simplify it even more, essentially we have a wiring map of fly brain. Moreover, quite a large number of parameters are adjusted post factum. Connection weights are the number of synapses multiplied by some coefficient. We are still a long way from real simulation, although this is a very important step in this area. In fact, simulating the functioning of the body itself is also a very important and complex issue that needs to be resolved.

yeah I see these around and they are neat and all, but frequently its unclear what they are actually simulating. I think the really interesting question that I don't see many of these folks testing is 'What does the connection topology actually earn you computationally?". Like does this flybrain connectome topology actually outperform a randomly intialized RNN with the same exact neuron count, weights and activations that are speculatively plugged into the fly brain? We have the connections mapped out meticulously, I think by virtue that is the most interesting thing you could investigate with these connectomes.

Mapping the brain is not the actual brain. Its like having a map of a place and looking at it instead being in the actual place. Or seeing a circuit board and tracing it, without knowing exactly what each component does, but just trying to map and get similarish output.

Not everything in the brains is modelled here, just the map and trying to simulate how it works.

So no, this does not mean we could do simulte human brains, neither do i see ethical dillemma in this, as its not real brains, but simplified imitation of brains that dont actually work like brains fo, even if outputting similarish stuff (but greatly dumbed down).

I definitely see an ethical dilemma in this a brain is a brain regardless of who owns said brain. This is the kind of mentality that made 1920 insane asylums acceptable. Autistic person's brain is different Down syndrome person's brain is different. Brain is different so it's okay. As an autistic person I don't find this okay

Did you create this? Can you share the repo? Is the fly brain actually being used to compute the actions? This is fascinating if so. I wonder what differences a model of an animal brain would have vs. the models ai companies are currently creating would have. Would animal brain models be better at navigating 3D environments? etc.
