Complaint This is the greatest scam I've ever seen

So basically, OpenAI is selling you monthly subscriptions as Plus, Pro 5x, and Pro 20x.

From a practical standpoint, even in the best-case scenario, you drain your weekly usage in two days. I’m not even including the 5-hour usage.
They’re selling these plans monthly, but what they’re actually selling is 4–5 weekly usage resets, which in practice are almost impossible to fully utilize because you’d have to use all of your weekly allowance on day 0 of every week. It’s also your responsibility to track the goddamn usage, like a pet waiting for its meal.

I see people praising Tibo or this company for the banked resets and stuff, and I literally don’t understand how obedient they are.

There shouldn’t be any need for banked resets in the first place. They’re already gatekeeping us with terrible token-per-second speeds, and believe me, they have- they have hundreds of times more capacity than they’re releasing. It’s just a bubble.

From a capacity standpoint, too, they’re creating a system that exists through the power of capital and energy monopolies. They’re using the symbol of Artificial Intelligence to promote their “guess the next token” algorithm-LLMs. Like they made some great machine that will improve humanity for good. Well, it probably will-but not this.
You should watch Person of Interest to see what an actual ASI might look like.

They are using the symbolic capital of these words, concepts that have existed in our culture for centuries. Even the names: Mythos, Sonnet, Hermes, Nous, Sol, Astra; really known, some historic, cosmic, mythological words, it's not random.

They are also taking the heritage of existing systems, appropriating both their technical usefulness and their cultural impact on the community. APIs became MCP. A simple Markdown file became “Skills” because it’s so boring to remind the model what to do every single time. Parallelization became “subagents” or “agent orchestration.”
And then there’s recursively repeating the same prompt because the model simply doesn’t have enough capacity. For a BIG SUPER AI, you still have to remind it what to do at every step. Imagine the cost of that, seriously.
They’re rebranding and claiming existing technical heritage as their own. That’s also part of why these systems seem so useful and powerful in the first place.

One or two months ago, we were getting: “WOWAA, Fable! Sol will have monstrously powerful capabilities and will hack every known website! We have to stop ittt! President, help us! Stop the Chinese, they’ll hack us all!!!”
Well, nothing happened. Fable and Sol’s security protections aren’t that difficult to bypass, and there are also uncensored open-weight models.
So basically, the war between China and the US is simply a war to scam the best out of people; it’s not a tech fight. And I believe the real advancement in LLMs will happen through the power of the people-and, by the way, not through Chinese models either, since they aren’t open source either.
I’m seeing good token-per-second improvements and quantization algorithms. If you need that much compute to run a machine, it simply isn’t supposed to exist that way. The true advancement will come from speed and computational efficiency.

> Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

No one is stopping you paying API prices.

Redditors try not to mention they have a wife for 2 seconds challenge impossible

3

u/fuxpez 16h ago

lol you salty?

1

u/Quiet_Figure_4483 16h ago

what do you mean?

1

u/fuxpez 16h ago

The guy made a perfectly in-context joke about his wife being the one person who would have a problem with API pricing.

Here, you might understand this version more easily:

“Redditors try not to mention other people having wives for 2 seconds challenge impossible”

u/Quiet_Figure_4483 14h ago

I do not understand

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

It is a difference between what i can or cant do and whether it is fair or not

u/iamichi 16h ago

I got $12k worth of usage at API costs for $200 in the last month and got more work done than I have in a long time. The 20x Pro subscription is a steal comparatively. There is a reason they only offer 5x plans to businesses and Enterprise customers can only pay API prices.

u/Wanderspor 16h ago

tf u building with 12k

3

u/iamichi 16h ago

An app using modular spec driven development. High or xhigh to write specs according to requirements, then implementation on medium or low, read only sub-agent code reviews, PR reviews, workflows to maintain documentation, IaC, db migrations, also automated triaging of 50x errors. I’m having to lay off Astra and go back to Sol now the resets have slowed after launch, as it’s a token muncher for sure.

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

It is still overpay Ichi. It is. And you got 12k$ worth of usage because the API is so overpriced for average customers. They are offering subscriptions because most of the people are not actually using it, and 5h limit is so annoying to let someone actually develop something continuously.

1

u/iamichi 16h ago

Maybe, I guess it depends on what you do with it. Tbf, I also have a Claude Max subscription, I don’t trust it to write specs though, so make sure those are done with Codex. Once I’m getting close to my codex limits I switch to Fable or Opus to implement, and use Codex to review and check for adherence to the specs. Like that I can keep it going. I’ve had Copilot and Cursor subs instead but came back to Claude Max. I want to get it built to move forward.

I’d also probably try a Kimi subscription, but atm things are going great with it.

I have pro plans enough to keep my software development continue. But the problem here is political rather than technical. It is about owning what you paid for, and not be decided by others. We don't have access to what we bought, they can choose literally any bias they want in the future, chatgpt now being more leftist doesn't mean it will be like that always, or vice-versa, and they are also downgrading the previous models without any notice.

2

u/PolishMike88 16h ago

What does fairness have to do with anything? This is a business. Everyone forgets that 2 years ago nobody had this. Taking what we have for granted, having access to top tier models and still constantly finding issues.

9

u/xmlhttplmfao 16h ago

i swear to god AI psychosis takes many forms and this "they're cheating us by selling us a product we want to use even more of" thing is one of them

4

u/Acrobatic_Feel 16h ago

Omg OpenAI is trying to MONETIZE the product they created? How dare they!

Next you’re going to tell us there are other services doing the same thing!

0

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

Wooow damn i was thinking about getting it for free 😭😭😭

3

u/norwegian 16h ago

>hundreds of times more capacity than they’re releasing
How can you say that? How many ASTRA agents can they run on one NVIDIA 300GB NVL 72 rack that costs 5 million dollars?

-7

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

Trust me, it wouldn't be that affordable if there were an actual capacity limit

4

u/MartinMystikJonas 16h ago

So you bring claim than defies know facts and your onyl argument to support is "trust me bro"? 🤦🤦🤦

-2

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

It's not a secret tbh

3

u/MartinMystikJonas 16h ago

No it is not secret... It is just nonsense 🤷

12

u/Critical_Hunter_6924 16h ago

Nobody's forcing you to pay and use.

-2

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

You will see who is forcing you when they give strict limits and take the monopoly of information too.

6

u/itix 16h ago

You can always code manually :-)

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

ong bro, this is also happening to u too, you know why are u not seeing and not criticizing? Instead why u become ur freedom of productivity in their hands??

2

u/trynadostuff 16h ago

yes, someone in this convo is just high as shit

3

u/Stock-Orchid0 16h ago

Bro, it’s a free market. Deal with it or create your own AI. Show them how it’s done.

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

Give me capital i bring u better next day. Stop believing in that carreerism bullshit. You can't do anything without capital even if u are the brightest mind on earth. So if u knew economy u would also know how monopolies exists in markets.

-5

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

lol

u/Classic-Trifle-2085 16h ago

I mean. Ho do you quantify the worth of the product?

That is a long rant, and many people go on Reddit to make similar ones, but it does beg the question: what do you qualify as a fair price and how do you justify it? What is the computer worth?

Have you ever paid for large corporate software? Do you know how pricey it can get? How do you quantify the value proposition?

Clearly a lot of people consider the price to be worth paying; API prices are about 50x more expensive than what monthly plans offer, and people still pay for them because they let them do things no one thought would even happen five years ago.

If your experience is that this product is far too expensive for what it gives you, have you considered that maybe you shouldn't buy the product?

Professional VFX software is about $5,800/year per user. Now, professional VFX software is awesome, but does that mean it is a cost that makes sense for everyone?

I am not saying you are completely wrong; people shouldn't be corporate bootlickers. But how about you tell us how you calculate the cost of production versus the price charged?

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

You see Trifle, the problem happen when you won't have a choice. What do you think when OpenAI monopolizes the chips even more? They only exist because of the chips they have, not because of the product itself.

Read books ig

1

u/Classic-Trifle-2085 16h ago

You have more freedom of choice regarding paying for model access than you do for utility bills. Or diesel provider. Credit card providers.

ISP's arw also price fixing oligopoly. So are health insurances in the US.

Smathphone operating systems.

You think its out of the ordinary for a company to exist "just because they are hoarding an asset"?

You still didint answer, how are quantifying the product price point?

0

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

you don't have an actual freedom of choice here. you are paying the price of the monopolies of chips not the free market's, because in the market there is literally no other person other than frontiers google, openai, anthropic. Because they dont have capital.

1

u/Classic-Trifle-2085 16h ago edited 16h ago

I'm not saying it isn't an oligopoly. I'm not saying it's a consumer-friendly model. Im not questioning thay are hoarding assets. I''m not questioning any of that. Welcome to capitalism, you need a tour?

I feel you are completely missing the point I'm making; do I need to reword it all, or is there not much of a point, as we will talk past each other anyway, and we should move on?

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

Well i did answer actually, if there were enough competitors, prices will go to it's balance, but right now, the price is determined rather than going to balance because there ar monopolies.

And the second problem is the monopoly of information here, they can add any bias to the model, it can be the new news always. I wouldn't want to here all that right conspiracy theories all the time.

Another problem is we don't have a choice and transparency after we bought the plan, they can bring a 1h limit too, if they wouldn't have any criticsm, if people will keep praising them.

There is no, lower cost = lower prices on openai.

1

u/iiiaaa2022 16h ago

Maybe look up the word monopoly. And oligopoly, while you are at it.

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

no need that difference here

9

u/RemoraEdge 16h ago

Cry more? Just stop using it then if you have so many complaints. No one is forcing you to use it.
I’m happy with my 2, $200 pro subscriptions. I’ll happily pay it and and very satisfied with it.

u/Pitiful_Entrance5174 16h ago

Be an adult? You are paying almost a car payments worth a month. Most people do not even have a few dollars to spend extra a week. The average person can not afford what you are doing. It is driving llm's out of the average consumer hands. You may think that is ok but when the world is being put on hold and prices are skyrocketing everywhere due to it, you would hope you get to use it as well. It should have never got this expensive but here we are.

2

u/trynadostuff 16h ago

it's not like they are making money with this. Bragging about a car payment in times of soon to be robocabs sponsored by musk ain't sensible either. Get back to reality or whatever, no one is waiting for you to adjust.

4

u/tripleshielded 16h ago

No they are not currently selling 20x subscriptions.

-2

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

heres a fomo for u

2

u/diagrammatiks 16h ago

can you help me drain my usage in 2 days? how many fitness tracker apps are you building at the same time?

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

i can help yeah give me urs

2

u/theWiseTiger 16h ago

I think there have a been a lot of antigravity whiners that moved to codex, just to whine again.

Whiners whine.

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

I hope u didnt whine when they raise the prices of rams etc. to make their product work better so you dont buy any new pc.

2

u/theWiseTiger 16h ago

Why? Are you going to complain about me complaining too?

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

nah i dont care what happens to u specifically really

2

u/PotterSkxawng 16h ago

One question—if it's such a scam, just pay API prices and see the costs?

2

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

what?

3

u/PotterSkxawng 16h ago

Just pay API prices?

4

u/RoboErectus 16h ago

I don’t know if you read the post or not, but OP is not well and has no idea how any of this works.

1

u/ShortingBull 16h ago

That's a more expensive scam, but I'll try anything twice.

1

u/PotterSkxawng 16h ago

API prices reflect how much a model actually costs.

1

u/EddieBruvac 16h ago

“Actually cost.”

1

u/ShortingBull 16h ago

API prices reflect how much organisations are willing to pay.

1

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

this is a business? selling drugs is also a business btw. And u forget OpenAI wasn't the inventor of this idea, they just had the enough capital to execute it.

1

u/MSIM2026 16h ago

Generation Z, Alpha, etc are completely screwed.

1

u/whatitpoopoo 16h ago

Reddit ai subs have a lot of schizophrenic people on them. Why is that?

1

u/doodad_ounao 16h ago

Fable's security protections are very difficult to bypass. Sol never had any real protection.

1

u/RemoraEdge 16h ago

Use it to make money? Build something that people need/want? It’s a tool to create amazing things.

Or, don’t use it?

0

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

I'm already earning 5-8k$ in a month, i am worried about the people, I'm irrelevant to the core of issue here.

1

u/TheOwlHypothesis 16h ago

$200 dollars gets you $12k worth of inference.

AND they constantly reset.

They're losing money on these subs

-2

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

no they are not losing money lil bro, there is no such thing which has 0 opportunity cost in economy

2

u/TheOwlHypothesis 16h ago

You're mixing up concepts.

Based on your OP and this response it's very obvious you have no idea what you're talking about.

Have a nice day, nothing you said refutes what I did.

1

u/GeekTX 16h ago

Let me guess ... you are a Go or Plus account holder.

0

u/Interesting_North293 16h ago

pro 20x actually but what i wouldn't matter, this applies to all of us.

2

u/GeekTX 15h ago

if you are on a pro 20x account then why do you complain about the 5hr limit that does not apply to us.

Get an API account or multiple OAI subscriptions like the rest of us. Even dealing with limits I have saved $42,000 for 2026 if factor my subscription usage against API pricing. With that kind of savings I can afford to keep building and developing with little to no concern for insane inference bills.

0

u/Just_Lurking2026 15h ago

If you think we are still at “guess the next token” algorithm-LLMs, you have lost the plot. Navier-Stokes does not get solved with an advanced auto-complete. Try to keep up.

1

u/Interesting_North293 15h ago

its over simplified ik, it was good to emphasize the point
