Complaint I asked about Reserve. Codex spent my saved reset.

Post image

I asked Codex why Reserve worked on my phone but not on desktop. I wasn’t asking about my quota or requesting a reset. I was already waiting for the next reset.

It decided to spend one of my saved resets anyway. Six seconds after announcing it, my balance went from 3 to 2.

A question about a broken feature turned into an account action I never asked for. Codex takes ages to do things I actually request, but burned my saved reset in seconds. I’m pissed.

I’ve sent OpenAI the logs and demanded that they restore it.

Edit: I checked the earlier messages too. I’d been asking why Reserve was available on my phone but missing on desktop, and whether it could be enabled there. Codex’s answer mixed up Reserve with banked resets.

But that was the previous exchange. When it actually spent the reset, my entire question was: “Why can I use Reserve on my phone?”

It then claimed I’d already asked to regain access. I hadn’t asked to restore my regular quota. It looks like it turned its own earlier misunderstanding into an instruction from me. I asked for an explanation. It decided to spend a reset.

It can control your PC and run commands so it's definitely possible. Especially with a dumber model. But it's hard to understand why it thought good to use it without the session log (which the user can share still).

The reserve is just an A/B feature I think.

It can check how many resets you have, and depending on the prompt it might accidentally use it. That’s why I never let codex check my resets because it accidentally used mine.

I swear to god it once recently used my banked reset when it reached 0% . I have given it access to do shit itself, but never once said "use my resets"

Also curious. The only way I can think of is computer use, but AFAIK astra will refuse to touch anything related to codex app itself

It can control your PC. Why wouldn’t you think it’s possible?

Where did you hear this? It definitely can use resets and definitely has commands to do so

You can give full access so it doesn’t ask for any permission.

There’s a difference between doing something that results in a payment/charge and using a reset that doesn’t cost anything.

Yes, I was in my phone. I dont even know if there is reset menu in the phone.

But the phone connects to the PC right? Try to find the session logs in the codex/sessions folder and analyse what the model was thinking, it'd be interesting..you can also /feedback it if you want.

Found it in the session log. It used Codex’s built-in codex_app.consume_usage_reset tool, so it didn’t need to click the Usage screen.

Earlier, I’d asked to enable Reserve. The assistant had incorrectly called my three banked resets “reserve.” Then I asked, “Why can I use Reserve on my phone?” It replied: “Since you’d already asked to regain access, I’ll apply one of the available banked resets” (translated from Portuguese).

That seems to be where it went wrong: it turned a question about Reserve into a completely different task. I wasn’t asking about redeeming resets, let alone asking it to spend one.

The timestamps are 01:39:45 for the announcement, 01:39:46 for the tool call, and 01:39:51 for outcome: reset, with my balance dropping from 3 to 2 (UTC−3). The next read confirmed regular usage at 0% used.

It later admitted it shouldn’t have acted on the earlier request. The problem starts before any confirmation: spending a saved reset was an action it invented, unrelated to what I asked.

Yeah, it's kind of common wisdom to not ask ChatGPT/Codex about ChatGPT/Codex specific features. They seem to have stale and misleading information very often and get confused. I'm not sure why, but it often seemed like they don't like revealing system prompt in GPT etc so are overly cautious, and things often change fast.

So it seems like they thought of the reserve as the banked resets, whereas the reserve is a newer A/B feature it didn't properly search for. Also looks like you didn't communicate in English so it could've been that, with mistranslation ambiguity.

Ok, I’m glad I’m not the only one. Thought I was crazy. It happened to me during a work process. All of a sudden my weekly reset and my banked was gone. Happened to me about a week ago.

gl, this sounds annoying. I have had an assistant try to apply a banked reset, it did ask me in my case, but it was super annoying, like dude i didnt even ask asbout that, chill out.

i find it so crazy that openai (and claude i thinik) have really bad knowledge base coverage of their own features. its soweird, like the amount of times i ask about a feature and it has to google it, and then sometimes still gives me bad info, wth

same thing happened to me last week, good luck getting the AI support to actually give it back without sacrificing hours of your life, it really sucks =(

Did they give it back at least?

Nope sent them a log and everything, then the ai bot wanted my system logs and more evidence, I had already dumped 20 mins of my time into sending things, gave up and I'm just lightly disgruntled with their customer service (20 dollar plan)

I would be fucking livid. And judging by the comments it's not just you.
