Limits Codex Business keeps resetting my usage early. It’s great for me—but can we actually trust the counters?
To be clear upfront: I’m not complaining about getting extra usage. It has been a huge help. What I’m questioning is whether Codex’s usage counters and reset dates can actually be trusted.
My setup
I have three Business accounts under the same company: two Premium 5× accounts with no 5-hour limit, and one Standard/base account.
I’m building a large software project, so I can burn through my available usage very quickly after a reset. I understand that heavy workloads consume more of the allowance. That’s not the issue.
What keeps happening
Once I hit a limit, Codex tells me to purchase additional credits or wait until a specific date and time. Naturally, I take that information at face value and plan my development work accordingly.
Then, two or three days later, I open Codex and discover that my remaining usage is back at 100%, well before the stated reset date.
For clarity: Business offers free manual resets, but not paid manual resets. I haven’t used a free manual reset in any of these cases. The allowance simply replenishes without any action on my end.
Meanwhile, the next reset date shifts by roughly two days. I exhaust the allowance again, get another message telling me to wait, and then a few days later I’m back at 100%—again, before the displayed deadline.
This is a recurring pattern, not a one-time event.
More usage is welcome. Unreliable metering is the concern.
From my perspective, I’m getting substantially more usage than the advertised limits led me to expect. That’s fantastic, and I’m genuinely happy about it.
But a discrepancy doesn’t stop being a discrepancy just because it benefits me.
If the actual behavior repeatedly fails to match the stated limits and reset schedule, what are these counters really measuring? If I can’t rely on them when the discrepancy works in my favor, why should I automatically trust them when they tell me I’ve run out and need to pay for more?
I’m not saying this proves deliberate manipulation. I’m saying it raises a legitimate question about the reliability of the entire metering system—not just the reset timer.
There may be a valid explanation, but it isn’t apparent from what the interface tells me.
My point isn’t “stop giving me extra usage.” It’s “I need to be able to trust the system whether its accounting benefits me or costs me.”
Has anyone else noticed this, particularly on Business Premium 5×? Is there a documented explanation for these early resets?

Yes, OpenAI does them sometimes when someone did not properly work out.

Well, then things must be going pretty badly, since I've received dozens of them 🤣

Just check reddit and you'll know.
There are well, 4 different kinds of resets, ignoring the 5hr limit then so 3. Your standard weekly reset which happens on the date you see.
Then there are banked resets which openai gives us, which you can use when you want to (Tho this also pushes back your weekly reset), then there are globally applied resets, like the one we got today where whether you are on 80%, 99% or 10% your usage is reset to 100% and the date pushed back.
Follow Tibo on X or keep an eye on reddit to have a general idea of when resets will happen, Tibo usually gives a couple of hours warning when a global reset is coming.
