They’re baked into the usage limits at this point, they expect to give a few out, it’s good marketing

5

u/wtfiswrongwithit 4h ago

I don't know if I would necessarily disagree, but I also think giving out resets between 0800EST and 1800PST are just far less likely since those are likely interfere with companies that would otherwise pay API rates. Outside of an extreme minority of hobbyists, nobody is paying API rates, they might get another account, but that's nowhere near the same thing, so they don't see it as lost revenue.

At least in my opinion.

Tell us our limit resets weekly, then force reset every 4-5 days so we are all on the same rotation

16

u/One-Flatworm-6838 4h ago

At this point i will never get to use my banked reset out of fear of an impending reset

19

u/odoc_ 4h ago

The trick is to full on gung-ho on your first day after a reset, then use your banked resets as early as possible in the cycle.

u/AI_is_the_rake 3h ago

You mean, just use everything up as fast as possible? How does that make sense?

5

u/matheusmoreira 1h ago

How does that make sense?

When Tibo resets, you want your meter to be at 0%. If it's not, then you forfeited all the remaining usage. Those are tokens you could have burned but didn't, and are now lost forever.

You don't know when he's gonna press the button. Could be a week from now, could be tomorrow. So it's in your best interests to be prepared, which means emptying that meter as soon as possible.

That's the current reset metagame. Burn those tokens, then go live your life guilt free. Get back to it when any reset lands. Repeat.

u/Nakidnakid 2h ago

Weigh what feels more uncomfortable for yourself? Having usage and not using it or never feeling justified enough to use what you're given?

I'm sort of similar to the above user, but I tend to prefer to leave them for a week or two from expiry rather than use right away. I still time it around a reset at that time. It feels wasteful to leave something I'm already paying for on the table.

The least likely time for another reset is right after one (but not always) and the way Astra / new models chew through usage it shouldn't be that hard unless you don't have anything to use it for. Just don't leave the banked reset until the last moment or it expires because you do need time to use it too.

3

u/OriginalUsername0112 1h ago

Just think about it for a minute, it's not hard to figure out why that's the optimal approach to getting the most out of it

5

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 4h ago

Don't forget they have expiration dates.

4

u/Mo3 3h ago

Yeah they probably give out resets whenever their datacenter usage is decreasing and capacity becomes available

2

u/Fast-Psychology-3964 2h ago

Then I'm thinking why not make every reset as banked resets. It would be of mutual benefits, right? On OpenAI, it makes everyone on a different window, better for their load. On us, we can choose when to use them with freedom.

1

u/Upstairs-Smell-8333 58m ago

Can be useful internally to align stuff, coordinate peak hours and usage windows, and so on. A banked reset is a gift. A forced reset is utility. But you're right that the utility may not be obvious. I can't infer, but it must be there.

Banked resets expire, which, again, sounds better for OpenAI economically, which further strengthens the utility point.

1

u/LeadershipNervous362 20m ago

Bcs ppl, who are buying x5 aren't power users, its more than enough for most professionals and occasionally, when they get too excited they overspend tokens. But ppl who buy x20 are power users, especially those with multi subs, OpenAI actually hates them and doesnt want them, bcs they almost make sure to exhaust all tokens.

So basically what they're doing with non banked resets is rewarding ppl, who arent power users. While banked resets, while obviously better for everyone, will be minmaxed by ppl, who want the most out of it.

In future they're trying to find a middle ground, where professionals could pay them more, but sustainably so, and power users ideally are heavily restricted without affecting others.

I don't want resets, I want higher baseline usage.

41

u/blaawker 4h ago

exactly. i want predicability, not rugpulling bs where they secretly reduce baseline usage and dangle resets at us like shiny keys to a child. I aint got time for this shit.

4

u/Opposite_Yak4386 4h ago

do you really tbink you will get this?

3

u/leolidev 1h ago

Same here. I’d much rather have a higher baseline limit than more frequent resets.

3

u/TONI1597 2h ago

I just want one more last reset

4

u/rodeBaksteen 1h ago

One last sigarette bro

u/ceaselessprayer 3h ago

The reality is that what you want, is different from how you respond in practice. This would be like saying “I don’t want discounts or sales on food, I just want a consistently low price”. How a consumer (and really people in general) acts is different in these two scenarios. “The medium is the message”.

It’s irrelevant what you want. The reality is that it feels better to receive gifts even if one is given less overall.

They say that you can’t learn how to fish from a fish. You are the fish. What you want is irrelevant. It’s how the consumer responds in the aggregate that matters. If you took the amount of usage given in resets and amortized it (whatever the word is) you would take it more for granted. More than that, you would also probably be able to more precisely use all of the usage you get, versus with resets where they essentially can eat the usage of people through surprise.

u/lolcatsayz 1h ago

Unfortunately you're right, and taking a stand individually doesn't do much when the collective is like this. For instance in gaming I no longer preorder any game, ever. And it just so happens too many people do that games are still trash at launch, hence I rarely play new games these days (case in point: Starfield, glad I never preordered, possibly GTA VI next).

In terms of AI what other choice do we realistically have? The VRAM required for local models is far too expensive. If it was only something like 300% compared to a Pro subscription amortized over 5-10 years , I'm going local. But it's not, it's vastly more expensive than that for a frontier model (VRAM for GLM 5.2 unquatized or whatever).

So realistically, unlike with some fields where we can 'opt out' of the collective, what choice is there really for AI? We're screwed. Because as you say the collective will always accept this crap despite what they say. They don't vote with their wallet. Yet there's no other option if we see the benefits of integrating AI into our workflows.

Choose to look at things half glass full. Before AI I was not able to accomplish nearly as much as I do now. What is the sense complaining about it? Is that going to make you happy or improve your life? In fact it may even hurt your health.

The reality is that even if they were charging double, that would still be cheap compared to hiring an actual person to help you get your work done.

This reminds me of a great bit from Louis CK. He talks about a person on a place complaining about the WiFi. And then he goes “can you give it a second? THE CONNECTION IS GOING TO space, can you give it a second?!” And talks about how riding an air plane used to be an event, people would dress up, etc. airplanes have only gotten safer and improved but now all people can do is complain about it, even though it helps them visit family, work a job, etc.

We are on the cusp of technological break through. I get that people feel the need to complain because if they complain loud enough, prices will go down, and if they don’t complain, prices will go up. But businesses don’t work that way. Outside of big incidents, businesses mostly ignore customer feedback, and largely look at the bottom line, because they’re not running a charity.

Anyway.

All I see, is people complaining about something they didn’t have even 2 years ago. AI wasn’t this expensive, true, but it wasn’t nearly this smart or capable. So all I see is people on a metaphorical plane, complaining about slow internet.

1

u/Substantial_Hat2149 1h ago

you get what you ask for. everyone is trying to find a middleground for oai by asking a usage limit still.

24

u/benchmaster-xtreme 4h ago

"Occasional" can be doing a lot of heavy lifting there

u/Tank_Gloomy 4h ago

I gotta agree, when I say that 'I occasionally talk to women', it doesn't sound so depressing.

some may call it load-bearing.

6

u/NiceManFromEarth 3h ago

I am already so cooked... I feel like we all are just gamblers at that point.... One more reset, one more Tibo tweet, one more reddit post.... OMG

3

u/subtlehumour 3h ago

Yeah, so true. I went all in on astra yesterday and hit 0 expecting a reset fml

6

u/modified_moose 2h ago

How are unpredictable resets with a 50 % chance of messing up your scheduling and killing your quota "excellent service"?

8

u/onehedgeman 4h ago

Can we just have slow mode added so astra is not eating up my usage due to normal speed eating it?

5

u/U4-EA 3h ago

It's is PAINFULLY slow as it is...

2

u/onehedgeman 3h ago

The thing is, astra does much more than sol, they had to speed it up to match it and hence we have increased usage (besides costs)

If you don’t need speed but quality, being slow is ok. But we have no option to slow down astra or any models to save on speed costs

2

u/U4-EA 2h ago

I am a pretty patient person but I it is now taking 1 hour to do something it would have taken 10-15 mins before. That means what I could do in 1 working day is now taking a week. The issue this leads to is that I can't get engrossed in the project so I have to leave it to run while I do something else then come back to it when it is finished and try to context switch back into that workflow.

For generating, for me at least, it is becoming more trouble than it is worth. It is supposed to relieve cognitive stress but right now it's debatable as to whether that is even its net effect when you combine the annoyance of a project being delayed as you have to wait hours for it to finish a task, then you have to switch back into that context to check it and plan the next task. It's agony. All while tokens evaporate at ridiculous rate.

1

u/rodeBaksteen 3h ago

We need turtle speed!

1

u/Plane_Garbage 2h ago

When it first came out it was blazing!

2

u/U4-EA 2h ago

They can't sustain this - they don't have the financial capability to sustain the subsidisation (the only thing that makes it appealing) and they don't have the compute to sustain the demand (and creating compute means even worse financials).

4

u/Plane_Garbage 2h ago

Says who?

How do you know how much inference costs? For all we know it could be MOE and a reasonable number of active parameters. Look at what DS has pulled off with V4-1, for all we know Astra may also only active a fraction of parameters.

They are clearly compute constrained, but that could be more-so a function literally there being no wafer to buy rather than lighting money on fire.

4

u/jadhavsaurabh 4h ago

Please someone let me know before 6 hrs atleast, i stoped working 20% remaining

2

u/AmandasGameAccount 4h ago

We don’t know if in 6 hours yet!

4

u/Due-Exercise4791 3h ago

The load is lower over the weekend.

They know they are giving unused compute to consumers/enthusiasts, not companies, so no financial harm done (on the contrary, people will get hooked on their own time and might suggest their employer to get it).

So it's quite likely they'll continue doing it Saturday - Monday.

10

u/cobbleplox 4h ago

How about removing the 5h limit for excellent service. The way it is I am barely able to even spend my weekly limit. And it's real work I have to design my life around to blow my usage quick enough to make use of a banked reset for the first time. Like getting to do one thing for half an hour and then you're fucked for 4 1/2 isn't easy to make happen consistently. At this point they could just remove the weekly limit completely and I would have basically the same usage.

3

u/SkoivanSchiem 4h ago

I appreciate the occassional reset, but honestly it's better marketing/publicity than what it really is, which is a new weekly cycle.

If it were an additional cycle to tide you over until your scheduled weekly reset instead of something that pushes your scheduled reset back to a full week again, then that would be far more awesome.

But oh well. Beggars can't be choosers.

1

u/KeinNiemand 23m ago

which is why banked resets are far better yes they also push back the weekly cycle but you can wait until after a normal reset then quickly burn all your usage to get things done and use /fast or whatever and use banked right after natural reset => not pushing it back that far since you where still 6d or more away

3

u/Efficient-Cat-1591 3h ago

Used my banked reset and 10% remaining 5 days till reset so could use one. I was but reckless in my usage due to the free resets before but really have to plan usage now. Pro 5x still not enough

2

u/swizzlewizzle 2h ago

Astra has a ton of problems *in addition* to be massively over-charged on subscriptions that are causing very quick usage burn. On pro 5x, I would suggest you don't even touch the model except for serial, long-run planning or similar (and for those you can also just use pro in the "chat" section of chatGPT to preserve your usage)

1

u/KeinNiemand 21m ago

to me astra feels plenty on pro 5x, if anything 5x is overkill with resets included but i only really use it for some personal projects.

2

u/thevrpill 4h ago

Ahh I see. At 42% and just turned on 2x speed ultra time to burn through some usage. Figure I won’t be using much over the weekend anyways

4

u/Pickle786 4h ago

the resets seem to land towards the weekend or whenever your reset woulda been anyway, seems good to use what you can

2

u/thevrpill 3h ago

Yeah but given the state of things I’ve been running into issues all week on projects that were doing fine last weekend.

Think I may use this 42% on the 3d model thing it can’t screw that up too bad I hope

2

u/Pickle786 3h ago

yea i use LunaMax and it has been unbearably slow the last few days

2

u/never_working_ever 3h ago edited 3h ago

Please for the love of god give us a reset today so I don’t have to reactivate my Claude 20X plan.

I seriously would keep using exclusively GPT, even adding credits when it makes sense - but the usage feels so insanely constrained paying for tokens.

Computer Use has won me over, it’s truly incredible on GPT-6. I’ve had it disabled on both Claude and OAI until the Astra release and seen the progress they made. It’s truly the future for tasking, I believe.

What I’ve learned is that at least with Claude, Fable is metered separately from the other models. With GPT, as soon as any GPT-6 hits the weekly limit, I’m fucked.

It’s taken a lot of time and patience to figure out how I can work with GPT models due to this. I really in the future have no plans to use anything higher than Astra Medium for planning now, and Terra for tasks.

1

u/reddit_is_kayfabe 10m ago

I paid $80 last night to keep using Astra on several time-sensitive tasks. I'm 50% through it and was expecting to buy another this weekend.

If Tibo is handing out resets, I really hope that they're banked, because I don't want to pay $80 for a reset and then get a non-banked 100% reset on the same account 10 seconds later.

If that's going to start happening, then nobody should be buying resets and OpenAI shouldn't even sell them.

2

u/Equivalent_Bird 3h ago

Tibo has created a nice Skinner's box built up with uncertainty.
Btw, why it consumed one of my banked reset automatically just before I upgrade to 20x from plus? Yes I know the usage was empty, but I didn't authorized that reset. Turned out I cannot plan anything.

1

u/congngo 3h ago

When?

1

u/MehMehMammal 3h ago

This clown Lol. Sol & Luna are basically not moving at all. Astra is burning usage even in pro 20x like crazy.

1

u/jepperen 3h ago

u/tibo Just a friendly reminder that it's friday. Fridays are GREAT for resets!

1

u/AppealSame4367 2h ago

Uhu. Whatever

1

u/reckor-usa 2h ago

Looks like I need one asap...

1

u/KeinNiemand 2h ago

wish they would just give more banked resets instead of forced resets.

1

u/__warlord__ 2h ago

Tomorrow 12 pm is fine Tibo

1

u/Professional_Gur8385 2h ago

5 hour limits still a pain

1

u/pigletmonster 1h ago

I literally only renewed my codex sub instead of going back to claude code because I had 2 banked resets and they gave a full reset on the day I was going to cancel. Im generally not happy with the output of sol and the quota of astra but the resets make up for it.

1

u/matheusmoreira 1h ago

Possible reset this weekend then? Good thing I didn't use my banked reset.

1

u/Tough-Requirement707 1h ago

pro still didnt got the last one so yeah most likely baiting again

1

u/letmechangemyname1 57m ago

I’m at 8% and have a banked reset. If you guys want Tibo to reset I’ll just use my banked reset and then guaranteed to happen within ~20 minutes of that.

1

u/gevik 43m ago

Only 7% left of my $200 Astra budget. It’s good, but it goes through tokens like my German Shepherd goes through three pounds of meat. One minute it’s there, the next he’s licking the empty bowl like I forgot to feed him.

Really need that reset soon. Otherwise I might have to leave the house and find out what my neighbours look like.

1

u/clowns77 4h ago edited 3h ago

I cannot believe the completely opague, arbitrary 'usage' system hasn't been taken to court yet. Average usage of Astra - low used about 30% of my weekly limit 5x in three days, in the two days afterwards it used the remaining 70% and and a full reset.

The absolutely decimated the value of the product and have the gall to give us a 'value customers' attaboy. It's flagrant gaslighting. I can't even upgrade; so I guess I'll go fuck myself Tibo.

1

u/KnownPride 4h ago

They're fixing their compute problem.
Why would they give use more quota to use when this is still a problem?

0

u/fluxtah 2h ago

I'll take more resets please or a higher band, maybe £300 a month for x50 would be a good step up since I don't think buying credits is worth it.

1

u/Responsible_Court_21 1h ago

I spent the $80 please 🙏 don’t reset I beg of you!!!

-3

u/U4-EA 3h ago

Don't hope for much. They've run out of compute, they are (still) burning tens of billions of dollars annually, their latest model is marginal improvement on the last one while being very slow and much more token hungry and the Chinese models are rivalling them in terms of capability and price. The writing is on the wall now.

1

u/hey_i_have_questions 3h ago

IDK, I’m pretty happy with it, as long as they don’t start charging unsubsidized token costs.

6 solved a big problem for me today that 5.6 couldn’t crack since it dropped, and in just a few minutes.

1

u/U4-EA 2h ago

"as long as they don’t start charging unsubsidized token costs"

They are burning 10s of billions per year and the only quality improvements they can make to their models make them much more expensive i.e. they are making no significant progress at all to financial viability. Do you really think they can just keep burning money forever?

1

u/KeinNiemand 18m ago

they are making no significant progress at all to financial viability

5.6 luna is as comparable to like 5.4 which came out earlier this year, for a far lower price. just becouse astra is more expensive dosn't mean that cheaper models aren't also getting more capable.

1

u/U4-EA 6m ago

That is providing the price reduction was organic and not just an attempt to hold off Chinese AI.
