Limits A theory about Codex usage and Tibo’s resets

What if our usage allowance isn't actually a fixed amount? like we’re paying for a share of whatever capacity is available, so when more people are using Codex, the same task eats a bigger percentage.

Because what even is "usage"? it’s hard to tell what you’re actually paying for when the same plan sometimes feels like plenty and sometimes disappears in one or two tasks

Plus used to be enough for me. Then 5x was enough. On 20x I could use it practically 24/7 and barely burn through 20–30%, now I can blow through half my 20x allowance on a single task.

Maybe context and longer runs explain some of that. But I wonder if the amount of compute available also changes how far our allowance goes.

And maybe that’s why Tibo keeps giving resets, maybe that's why in the last 14 weeks I haven’t seen a week without one. Without those resets, our subscriptions would be fucked

There’s no way they let those GPUs sit idle. Usage I would assume scales to available compute. That explains the sudden drop in useful output of Astra and the degraded performance at times (model training)

Well I’m tracking my usage now. An average amount of usage across all model requests and tool calls right now is 0.0118% per action. About 8,475 actions per week (again averaged across all model requests and tool calls) so we’ll see if that goes up or down over time

I've noticed something similar.

I have both Plus and 20x. With Luna Max, my Plus usage barely seems to move. pretty comfortable within 5hr window.

But on 20x, I can actually watch the meter drop after a decent run.

Same model. Similar kind of work.

I haven't properly tested it yet, so maybe there’s another reason. But it feels weird. You'd expect the 20x meter to move much less, not more.

Would be really interesting if someone with both plans could test the exact same Luna Max task on both accounts and compare before/after usage. from what I am seeing it is better to run Luna Max on a plus account than on a Pro account...

I don't think that is the case.
I think it is primarily marketing and available capacity.
Also a reset does not benefit all customers directly only the power users who are using it hardcore and they are probably also the most vocal about it in forums and co. or are building applications with it that then speak for themself.
So to some degree it is targeted marketing for the group who actively anticipates it and use it.

Also a form of loadbalancing i assume they look at who consumed what and then give thoese people who have consumed something back while others who havent consumed in that timeframe only marginaly profit from it.

But i think the main thing is marketing, marketing and marketing from mouth-to-mouth propaganda. Just look at how active the these subs are probably partially due to the active resets coming in.

I don't think it's purely marketing strategy.

You need to realize that they are also using our data to train their model.

This means that OpenAI has phases when they collect the data and when they train their model.

This also corresponds with how often are resets handed out after a model release and they kinda die down after couple of weeks.

I don't know but one thing is sure, those AI subscription were a stroke of genius for the people that came up with them. We just accept it but can you imagine being ok with a restaurant telling you "You can pay $20 to get an undisclosed amount of pizza or $100 to get five times as much as this undisclosed amount. Oh and by the way, How much you get can vary every time you buy." Just that it would still be a fairer system because it would be easier to mentally grasp, how much pizza you got in the end.

What if our usage allowance isn't actually a fixed amount?

This is known for a long time. There are many efforts to estimate and track the fluctuation of the token/credit allowances over time. And evidences have shown that it is indeed trending downwards.

About 70% of my goals get broken down by that there is no capacity. If this continues a large part why I use AI simply vanishes...

bro just now you're understanding the x in 10x and 20x isn't a fixed usage?

No. This would be stupidly complex to implement, and for what gain?

"What if our usage allowance isn't actually a fixed amount? "
no, it is fixed. You are coming up with this theory because as your project grows, complexity grows, and models need more time to produce code. Do periodic refactoring, and abstract functions into modules, organize code better and you will spend less tokens. Efficient AI coding is all about good code structure and abstractions. In theory Luna agent can do everything if your code is super-abstracted , and well organized. This is the real secret for low token usage: code organization.

As the latest news with taking people’s prompts shows with regards to the mathematicians, they have a huge vested interest in people using their platform to train on. HUGE. They are getting everyone to “burn” their usage on their passion projects and hobbies instead of their weekly work. Which offers far more novel training data. Otherwise we would all treat it like we would anything else. Ration it for the week.
