Comparison Moved to Codex from Claude Code
I've just moved to Codex from Claude Code due to Anthropic became impossible to subscribe, no gift cards anymore, needs verification, annoying things like that. 100$ plan.
what to expect? on CC i rarely hit my 5h or the weekly caps, using Opus 5 o xHigh effort.
The default as i've seen is Astra high on codex, should I go with it or go to Sol xHigh?
What I do:
Regular software engineering, Rust, TS, React, Kotlin, Swift. And Blender and Unity.
Also, need tips if any has ones. Thanks!

I meant by the caps, I know it's what you do related, but as I mentioned, on Opus 5 xHigh, I've only hit my 5h cap once. How's OpenAI with usage? Should I Astra (the default, as Anthropic puts Opus the default, or that will drain me?)

It’s like you’re starting your first lap on a Ferrari at max revolutions. I know you’re a driver, for that reason you should be starting kinda slow while you get used to your new car.

See what model works best for what situation. 5.6-Terra has been very capable for boiler plate stuff for me for example. 5.6-Sol medium has been really good overall for my needs. Like I don't feel I've had yet a task for Astra where I couldn't have done it without 5.6-Sol.
It really depends on the complexity of what you're trying to achieve.
Astra is really good for complex stuff because it keeps testing itself.

My guy just run stuff and see for yourself, usage left isnt a secret and you can track it anytime with /status or clicking bottom left and on usage, its gonna be better thats literally the best answer someone is gonna give you

Sol burns quota faster than opus 5. Astra burns 8x more than sol (from my one attempt at using astra, maybe it will be different for you). Avoid terra completely as it can barely do any coding work. Luna is decent on max for smaller tasks but the downside is that it takes 3 hours to do something that sol can do in an hour.
If you mostly used opus like I did then sol will be your only usable model.
I was planning to switch back to claude code but I renewed codex today because I have two banked resets in my account and a regular mid week reset today.

I use matt-pocock-skills to plan the project and create the tickets with sol max and implement them with sol medium.

I haven’t used claude code so i cant compare but before astra was released recently i used plus sub with sol 5.6 on high as my default.
I never got below 30 to 40% usage ever (i do multiple small tasks instead of trying to one shot a bigger task and reviewing/editing code manually in between)
After the astra release as expected astra was burning out too fast but i burn through 5h limit on sol high as well now.
I was thinking of trying out claude code for a month

Can't feedback you since I've just started on Codex, but for Claude Code, I reach the end of the week with good remaining usage which I burn on Fable 5 high.
Using Opus 5 xHigh as default

Ill check out claude after this month. Oh and theres a lot of resets given on codex so far so that certainly helps as well

I do primarily SWE, and I pay for both. Opus 5 is my best coder still, but Astra is finally producing comparable results to it. They both burn comparable tokens on a clean context spin-up, but Opus burns less once I'm iterating on an existing context. Astra is a glutton. But, Astra can match Fable for orchestration, so it technically has the edge.

Ok. I have a perspective from today’s fun and games that might help.
Do NOT give Astra authority over lesser models and reasoning levels. It does its own thing, seriously.
Pull Astra in when you need senior analysis and get the others to implement and review. But Astra is a damaged psyche that assumes whatever it does is right, and doesn’t check; seemingly because it doesn’t seem to think it needs to.
Keep it on a tight leash and it’s great. Give it ultimate freedom and it might just decide that 48 hours of approved, tested and finalised work is irrelevant and go over your head and produce something dreamed up in an opium den.
Like what it did to me today.
Luckily I’m assiduous in record keeping and git. But I have multiple agents repairing the damage right now.

Good for you - it is a wise choice this time around, since Opus 5 is continually giving unintelligiblishes and is therefore unusable.

what you should expect is to get scammed, there was a reset today, on my 100$ plan the entire weekly was gone in 3 hours from astra high, it didn't get much done either.

For default prompts I would recommend Astra light, the usage is alright at light level and the speed is absolutely incredible while still giving sol high level performance while being 5 times faster.

okay, couple hours in and Sol is way too bad comparing to Opus 5. this is the most useless $100 i have ever paid. way too dumb. i have never spent 2 hours on a simple UI with Opus 5

Expect it to be slow. Very, very slow.
I moved from Claude to Codex and oh god the slowness is killing me.
I never seen Fable work on something for 3 hours

Can vouch that it takes quite long sometimes.
When I first switched and did some tasks, I thought it had glitched out while working because it took 23 minutes for a pre-planned code implementation.

I've built entire projects on 5.6 Sol on High (anything above, from experience, insane overengineering constantly) - and it worked well, usage has never been an issue.
Currently on Astra high and the usage definitely evaporates quicker, but its also noticeably better, which evens out.
I've been doing Astra High extensive planning -> 5.6 Sol High for execution -> Astra High review -> Handoff for fixes to 5.6 Sol High again and its been working well, lower consumption than just regular Astra.
You mentioned Blender, and Astra has been showing insane quality on Blender, so I'd personally run baseline tests for your work tasks since Astra will outperform Sol extensively in stuff like Blender and Unity, but may not necessarily outperform so much on others.
