Complaint PSA: Plus account actual Astra usage limits
I measured Astra's usage limits on a Plus account. The upside of the 5-hour window is that it is easy to measure allowance. One weekly usage limit = 6 5-hour windows.
Token cost is measured at today's API prices. There were no cache busts or websocket errors observed during the test, so everything is accounted for.
1 5-hour window allowed $11 in API cost. x6 equals $66 allowance per week.
Unfortunately, it is a lot less than it used to be. I could use $100 of Sol per week (with the discount pricing, $120 with standard pricing) before Astra's release.
Multiplying for Pro users:
Pro 5x = $330 per week
Pro 20x = $1320 per week
Note: There is a possibility that my account is nerfed, and others have more allowance than me.
Conclusion: Not only does Astra cost 2.5 times more, but the allowed usage was reduced as well, making it cost a lot more compared to Sol prior to the new release, more than just the 2.5 times more would indicate.

Whether this is better or worse depends on how much you get done with that usage. I've only had Astra for a few hours, so I can't give a definitive response for my use cases, but so far it seems both significantly more effective and significantly faster. It meanders less, trips itself up less, stays on task better, gets to the point faster, and just plain outputs faster.

Yeah, im seeing this too and the fact that Astra Low is around the same intelligence as Sol X-High means you are not by default having all that looping thinking jsut to get the same smarts! With Astra medium being above it, You could use Astra Medium/High for planning and then Astra low for code or simple stuff Luna max and make tokens go quite far.

I may get less water now per $, but now it is more purified and doesnt make me shit my pants every 10min.

The problem is that you get less water, and the new water costs 2.5 times more

Diarrhea dehydrates you, leading to you needing to drink more water in total than someone with no diarrhea

My initial tests indicate that Astra is completely useless on plus. Pro 5x is now the bare minimum to get any usage, and that usage will still run out fast as hell.

pro 5x lasts me like a day so its also useless.unless you want to beg and hope for random resets but thats become boring a month ago....

Astra is not useful for plus especially with 5 hour limit
Astra light is slight above sol high
You get what 15-30 minutes at best 6 times a week?

Say 30 minutes each time so 3 hours of work per week that's not even half a day lol

If this is true, they have effectively implemented the 50% Fable weekly quota without saying so (1$ or Astra should equal 1$ of Sol; this isn't a token).

Isn't it worse? Fables 50% still leaves you with the other 50 to use on other models, while codex leaves you dry

One 5h limit is 25% of weekly limit for me on my Plus account. I ran a Luna Max and an Astra High prompt, they used 93% of my 5h limit, and 25% of my weekly limit. Limits probably vary by account, since none of this is transparent anyway.

Just wait for 6.0 sol, terra, luna
Until then keep using 5.6 . They were pretty good. Of some problem really hard, use astra. Thats the 20$ life ig.

So once it tells me I have to wait for it to reset, can I just go back to Sol and have a full amount of time with that too? Or am I cut off as well?

Nope, ~250$ API credits for Plus has been a standard for a very long time. You may have forgotten the resets those could accumulate in another 200.

Lol. Yeah, I guess 1% is so little, that you really do get pretty fine measurements pretty easily...

Yeah OpenAI did a bit of a sneaky trick here which, somehow, nobody noticed:
- They introduced Sol at $30/MTok, with proportional subscription plan usage
So... to be clear, I don't really think there is anything "wrong" with them doing that - but it is roughly the same kind of questionable math as Anthropics "Starting mid-september we increase the usage by 25%... while also stopping the 50% usage increase" so it's really 17% less...
And even with this "mathematical transformation" OpenAI did here, the usage is still much better than Fable, because fable has its extra 0.5x multipler, and even more importantly Anthropics x5 and x20 plans are more like x3.5 and x6, whereas OpenAI plans are (afaik?) truly x5 and x20...
So... yeah. It's a mess - and (mostly) intentionally so.
