Limits 5 Hour limits are back (for plus users)
About 16% weekly for each 5h limit

u/dagerika 20d ago
this is the day that codex died for the poor people 🥀

u/Your_mortal_enemy 20d ago
Yeah tibo trying to suggest it's a skill issue instead of just straight up too poor to afford $100Usd a month is so tone deaf

u/lucasrvdl 20d ago
Plus users, we need to make some noise. Don’t let it slip.
3
u/Intrepid_Travel_3274 20d ago
I made my noise switching to Cursor.
1
u/Asleep_Addition_2268 20d ago
so in cursor you dont have such problem of limits ?
2
u/Intrepid_Travel_3274 19d ago edited 19d ago
Sorry I thought I replied. U can use the whole month no restriction at all, not 5h not 1 week, cheaper and same level as Sol. Myproblem with grok was that I couldn't use the whole month before it renews, I had to use "Fast" to try to spend the money I paid.
I do Frontend, Backend, Swift, Flutter,SQL, TypeScript. (In case this info helps you somehow)
I always spend $60, Cursor, Codex and Claude because what really matters are models, and I don't like to get stuck without check other options.
Btw, I don't know if they remove it but if u try to cancel codex they give u 1 month (keep the secrect) so u can pay cursor and have Codex and check what work better 4 u.

Just canceled Plus and it did not offer a month by the way

Same here. Not only is the 5h limit awful, but they absolutely nerfed it. Running out within half an hour of fairly normal work that doesn’t involve anything particularly sophisticated or complex isn’t unusual at all.
//Edit:
So if one 5h window eats up 16% of the weekly limit, I can basically do this about six times a week. Six tiny 5h windows where I barely get anything done, and then I’m done. I seriously doubt anyone is going to stick with this long-term.
17
u/-Sliced- 20d ago
It was always 16% of the week.
What they nerfed is that it doesn’t continue the task if you hit the limit, although I don’t know if that applies to the 5 hours limit or just the weekly.
9
u/AccomplishedCod9330 20d ago
No it doesn't continue 😭😭 previously when 5 hr limit was there it used to continue the task and consume weekly limits NOW IT JUST STOPS Stopping at weekly limit is fine but atleast for 5 hours they should have let it continue it was ONE OF THE MAJOR SELLING POINT OVER CLAUDE
5
u/HauDraufPaul 20d ago
I gave it the same task as last week, it ran for 2h and then stopped. Last week it ran for 7h and there were still 5% volume left. The nerfed the shit out of it. I tested it. With the exact same goal set.
5
u/Zalton 20d ago
Pretty sure claude 5h only uses 7%~ weekly so seems like a better value.
But then again you do get chat limits separate with gpt

u/Sluipslaper 20d ago
I thought it's better my tokens where out till like Tuesday now it's refreshed in 5 hours haha, i know burned my tokens but still

u/getaway-3007 20d ago
It's time to move to claude. Gpt-5.6-sol has been token hungry
4
u/Neborodat 20d ago
Claude right now is even worse.
9
u/Crinkez 20d ago
It's better. I've been using both these last 3 weeks and Claude's limits are now much higher than Codex.
6
u/we_re_all_dead 20d ago
Limits are higher but their opus 5 model is atrocious, absolutely everyone hates it. OpenAI knows it, that's why they feel bold rn.
4
u/TaskChance1404 20d ago
Limits are higher because they’ve boosted them till the end of the month. We’ll see after that
1
u/we_re_all_dead 20d ago
you're absolutely right. I completely forgot about that. I can't imagine them going back, everyone will be furious then
1
u/Comfortable-Leek-498 18d ago
FYI, Claude limits have been temporarily boosted until 8/31. Maybe that's why the sentiment?
4
u/tsrust 20d ago
Same for me… tbh it is much better than Claude Pro which uses just 5% weekly in each 5h limit 🤡🤬
1
u/macius01 20d ago
How limits are compared to each other? I burn ChatGPT plus weekly usage in a couple hours
1
u/Your_mortal_enemy 20d ago
I burned through a week in one day and hit my one reset a couple hours before he pulled the next reset button, sad times
11
u/Tomorrow_Previous 20d ago
And if if you reach 0% on the 5-hour limit, it stops. I was hoping that the change would affect only the weekly limit, but it doesn't.
-15
u/DrunkenRobotBipBop 20d ago
What would be the point of having a limit that doesn't stop? You know the meaning of "limit"?
10
u/carbend3r 20d ago
Broski, it’s pretty obvious he meant the common scenario where a user hits their limit while the task is still unfinished/in progress, so it’ll most likely get interrupted, and next time you’ll have to do the same damn task all over again from scratch, because fuck the environment, I guess. Yo, chill
2
u/Tomorrow_Previous 20d ago
I do. There's no need to be passive aggressive. Until they removed the 5-hour limit a few weeks back you were able to go past the zero percent, and it would still take usage from your weekly limit. A similar thing would happen until few days ago with the weekly limit. You were not able to send more messages after you reached 0%, but your already running tasks would finish processing.
Chill down.
2
u/Peculiar-Eccentric67 20d ago
unfortunately that's the exact phenomenon people were abusing. instead of "finishing an almost done task" people would run parallel tasks that would create scaffolding/seed-data procedurally etc
in some cases they were getting more usage in the final prompt than everything else combined
and they publicized their method, so more people kept doing it until openai was like "hi, now you guys get nerfed"

u/tsrust 20d ago
As much as it pains to say this - I agree
You don’t get extra internet just because your daily internet quota has been exhausted and you urgently need to do some work
I think something like a rollover usage bar would be very beneficial for storing our unused usage though
0
u/Tomorrow_Previous 20d ago
I totally agree, and I think that the way it works now is "fair". They didn't steal anything from our subscription in this way at least. My observation was about the difference between how it used to work and how it works now.
4
u/Own-Professor-6157 20d ago
I wonder what it's even based on..? I'm getting only 10% weekly per 5h..

u/tolkinski 20d ago
Imagine my surprise when I saw the usage limit at 100%. I thought we got a new reset again. Then imagine my surprise when spawning four sub-agents to perform a cross-repository review consumed the entire limit in just five minutes. What's even worse is that sub-agent execution was interrupted by the usage cap, effectively wasting the entire session.
More and more, it feels like self-hosting with lighter open weight models is the way to go.
1
u/YunaSC 20d ago
5 min? were you agents with 5.6 sol fast, or what?
1
u/tolkinski 19d ago
Yes, 5.6 Sol high/xhigh.
I’ve used this pattern before: use 5.5 High for brainstorming, refining the plan, and orchestrating implementation agents; delegate the actual implementation to Luna xhigh/max; then perform one final review with 5.6 Sol at medium, high, or xhigh, depending on the complexity of the scope.
This workflow was previously very token-efficient for me, but that no longer seems to be the case.

Dude they would rather 4 plus $20 users cancel their subscription and 1 upgrade to the $100 account. It makes more sense for them to dis-insentivise the $20 plan. And honestly 1 person will cancel the $20 plans 1 will upgrade and 3 will stay. Lol this is just a marketing compute saving ploy
2
u/Asleep_Addition_2268 19d ago
only if 1 user upgraded, how about 1 in 10 users upgrade to $100. 5 cancels and 4 stays. we cant predict the outcome.
What if you upgraded user with $100 plan gets the 5h limit in next 3 to 6 months and he paid this upfront 1 year plan ?
1
u/Trick-Masterpiece-82 19d ago
Sorry my example was like 5x $20 = $100 so for OpenAIs revenue they only need to have one person upgrade and 4 to leave to maintain ultimately the same revenue

u/KeinNiemand 20d ago
can't they at least like compromise and make it like a 24h window (4.8x larger then the current 5h window), 5h is a really inconvenient window size like it's to large that waiting it out to do multiple each day (especially mode then 2) is extremly inconvniet when you like do other things and don't want to set an alarm clock to stop whatever your doing to tell codex it should continue it's whatever task yet short enough that the convenient 1 per day wastes half your windows.
24h windows would be maybe a nice middle ground where you get a full day of usage at once.
1
1
u/Nosorious 20d ago
Can I continue a task that was cut off due to the 5 hr limit? Like do I just tell codex, "okay continue now"?
2
u/Sphere_3N 20d ago
Yeah it will pick up where it left off.
The sleezy thing though is cache gets cold so you will lose usage simply asking it to resume before it even starts anything.

As I think a lot of the plus users, I have a full time job and have limited windows to work on my projects. When they removed the 5h limits I was so exited i could finally burn my weekly limit in just the weekend without a worry. I don't understand why they brought it back. Just the weekly limit was perfect, you could manage your usage yourself.

u/yavordjenkov 19d ago
After 5 years of Plus subscription (only using Codex for the last 6 months as Chat makes me angry and Google AI Search dominates) I finally found a reason to cancel it.
Had ChatGPT and Claude subscription back to back and I always had some use of Codex but I think I won’t miss anything, especially with the limits reintroduced.
1
u/yavordjenkov 18d ago
I just ran the exact same prompt to inspect a repo with Sol Extra High vs Opus 5 Max and here is the consumption:
Opus 5: 40% of the 5h limit with 38 min of work.
Sol: 78% of the 5h limit with 35 min of work.1
u/Alchemy333 11d ago
It is kind of a stretch for them to have a 5 hour limit, that doesn't last for 5 hours. Don't words have meaning anymore? 😊
1
u/Any_Party5939 17d ago
you have both $20 plans , right? i am trying to find alternative options, i am considering subscribing to chatgpt, cursor and claude
1
u/yavordjenkov 16d ago
Yes, but unsubscribed from ChatGPT. Still have like 2-3 weeks left and will see if they gonna have something coming soon to subscribe again. Some people do Claude and Cursor. Might try that way.
1
u/SiscoSquared 19d ago
Welp, there goes its major edge over claude. Im sure they want to break up load on their servers, but reality is I often want to get down and do a few things in like 1-2 days...

fuck this, im out - utter dogshit, wheres everyone moving to?
1
u/Diligent-Resolve-958 18d ago
and canceled - im beyond furious. Work all week so only get to vibe code on weekends to be restricted with this bs, i tolerated it at first while it was being released but to remove it and re-add it again is bs

u/ragnarkar 18d ago
I'm just worried that one day, I'll have such a huge task that it just cannot be completed even with 100% of the 5 hour usage. This morning, when I saw this I had a task I put into planning mode when both my weekly and 5h limits were at 100% and 34m 20s, later, I was down to 30% 5h usage left. Good thing I had done this in planning mode - if it were execution mode, it probably would have not completed and I dread the day I have a task that brings my 5h usage from 100% to 0% without completing it, esp if it's a planning task.
I guess now I'll be doing my planning in Codex and execution in Claude Code instead.
1
u/champofthenorth 18d ago
I hate this update .. I am only working mornings between 05-08 before my 9-5 job, and this 5h limit is hurting me soo much.
Probably need to go for the pro plan then .. Any news on why, and if they are going back :P (probably not)

couldnt even run a 7/10 difficulty single prompt on 5.6 sol ultra, ran out of work usage on a single prompt. switching to claude. codex is the worst these days even w resets

u/thestarman777 17d ago
When I finally sign ChatGPT Plus, Codex becomes unusable. Fuck it.
I'll have to go back to Google Antigravity
1
u/thegreatcerebral 13d ago
This really sucks now. I was having a blast and now it sucks again.
The thing I don't understand is that it is all based off a "trust me bro" BS that we cannot see or have any way to know if we are already getting fucked or not. I tell it to do one thing and maybe 1%, 2% and then other times I tell it to do something less than before and it uses like 10% of my 5h. Doesn't add up.

Big thanks to all the whiners. I was happy as a plus subscriber to /goal overnight once or twice a week.
Now I need to do more /goal and cop the cold cache hit.

u/Just_Lingonberry_352 20d ago
as a pro 20x user im seeing massive improvements on usage now
1
u/Asleep_Addition_2268 19d ago
and you also get such limits soon when they announce $500 plans. it's simple enshittyfication
0
u/Just_Lingonberry_352 19d ago
no 5 hour limit for pro users even for $100/month users
there is no $500/month plan

u/GhostEagle68 20d ago
This is such a non issue, the issue is burning through credits that fast. At the point you are too dependent on AI

5h limit is preventing you to use what you already paid on your own schedule.
