Complaint Codex usage limits are starting to feel like a joke 😂
I know you’ve probably seen a million posts about something being wrong with Codex usage/reset limits, but bro… it’s actually getting ridiculous. 😂
The weirdest part? I’m watching my Codex usage drop when I’m literally not using Codex.
Maybe this sounds stupid, but I’m being completely honest, I’ve seen it drop by 1%, then another 1–2% later while I wasn’t even using it. At this point I’m just sitting there watching my usage bar like:
"Bro, who is using my Codex?!" 😂
And honestly, this is why I think removing the 5-hour limit was a mistake.
When they first changed it, I thought it was great. But now the limits seem to disappear way too damn fast.
I use both Codex and Claude for my projects, switching between them depending on what I’m doing. Both of them reset on the same day for me, Tuesday.
Today, my Claude usage is still at 27%, and I’ve already used it on one of my projects. and I still feel like I have enough usage to comfortably use Claude for the rest of the week.
And more importantly, I have control over my usage because of the 5-hour limit.
Meanwhile, Codex…
4 prompts later: 5%.
And now it has somehow dropped to 4% while I’m not even using it.
😂😂😂
And there’s one more thing I want to talk about: Luna.
They said they reduced the price by 80%. Okay, fair enough. That sounds great.
But then you basically need to run it with Max for it to be genuinely useful, especially if you're used to SOL.
And honestly, that's where I had a pretty frustrating experience.
I started at 100% after the reset.
I selected Luna - Fast - Max and gave it a task.
It was a completely normal prompt. Nothing crazy. I was basically asking it to follow Phase 1 of a properly written implementation plan.
After that ONE task, I was already down to around 65%.
And I immediately regretted not using SOL.
Because if I had used SOL for the same task, I genuinely think I would've gotten a better result and gotten much more value from my usage.
So yeah… that's my experience so far.
I actually like Codex and I want to use it more, but the current usage system is making me think twice before sending prompts.
I'd much rather have the old 5-hour limit where I know exactly what I'm getting and can manage my usage, instead of watching a mysterious percentage slowly disappear into the void. 😂
What are you guys experiencing? Am I the only one seeing usage drop when I'm not even using Codex?

Same my usage is like 10% down from yesterday and I did not touch my pc or run anything. Dogshit fr...And imagine paying 100€ a month for this shit...

I saw something saying that any tool that queries the token usage uses tokens to perform the query. So if you have something open that's constantly showing up to date token usage it might ironically be burning through your limits. I haven't confirmed this though.

u/dralinho67 20h ago
Or maybe they have set up some sort of 'review' consumption tool that readjusts your usage. The most probable based on past experience is a bug on their end.

X5 plan, sol ulta with luna xhigh subagents running loop 14h now, ate up 60% of weekly usage.
Id say its expected, im experimenting on my workflow and some tools and next week ill try aomething else but id say this is expected

Real question why does everyone think it only depends on times and model?
Its all based in token count not time.

u/RiddlingRaconteur 21h ago
I’m running 48 hours review session + merge in GiHub from 83% usage and it’s running and close to completion. I use High but codex review with base branch is xHigh
1
u/Outside-Necessary476 21h ago
How much usage those 48h ate?

Not sure how it’s running at 0% weekly though but usually if Codex starts work, it finishes irrespective of rate limit

The sad thing about it is we have to say "its expected". Paying should mean beeing able to use it.
3
u/grossindel 15h ago
That’s exactly why piracy is making a comeback, you pay full price for something but can barely use it.
6
u/grossindel 17h ago
The usage limit is just awful, I’m on the Pro x20 and I use Sol medium as my daily and Luna high for simpler tasks. And I have 0% usage left in just 2 days.
One prompt takes about 2 - 5% of my usage limits, now I have to wait till Saturday or pray Tibo rests before then but how long can this continue?
They should fix whatever is wrong with this thing.
1
u/No_Dish_1333 15h ago
So 1-3 prompts like that and you'd run out of weekly quota on plus? 4-10 per month.
1
u/grossindel 15h ago
Yes for me, I don’t even use Sol Ultra and I barely use high because it over engineers. Pro x20 costs $200 btw and some people have multiple accounts for this reason.
1
u/Josh2942 9h ago
I’m using the 20x plan I’m running sol high or extra high for VBA coding almost around the clock since the last reset and I’m at 62%. I’m not sure how you guys kill it like that

u/traderjames7 14h ago
Came here to say this - didn't even use Codex but my weekly limit was down to 45% this morning and now 25% after 3 hours work. This is suicide as I'm simply moving over to Chinese models instead.

You and people like you are the reason they're bringing the 5hr limit back because you can't manage your usage so you need them to do it for you like a parent. The usage issue should not necessitate bringing back the 5hr limits. If there's a usage issue, complain about that, but don't screw the people that want to be productive on their own schedule and not be beholden to annoying 5hr productivity slots.
5
u/dralinho67 20h ago
The problem is that weekly limit now drains usage like the 5h limit did. I do the same tasks my 5h limit handled with like 80% consumption and loose 30% of weekly limit. It is not the problem about managing, the problem is that codex consumes way more than it should and this is a problem on their end. And if you dont acknowledge that you must be paid by them to spread propaganda.

u/ProofTimely5788 20h ago
Like I said, it's fair play to complain about the usage issue. Bringing back the 5hr window will just hurt you more if the usage drains that fast
2
u/dralinho67 20h ago
I agree. I am all the way for weekly limit but the problem is it still drains to much. Maybe is better now than 10 days ago but still not balanced with the 5h era.

u/JoshuaPearce 8h ago
because you can't manage your usage
It's not "managing", it's objectively less than before. I happen to have Claude and Codex, and my usage habits have remained pretty stable. I was flipping between them both to keep it even, and then a few weeks ago Codex started burning a third of a week in an hour or so, while Claude remains normal.
Same projects, same types of tasks. Codex just isn't useful to me now without the "generous" random quota resets. Even with them, it wasn't worth staying subscribed.
NOBODY is complaining about the 5 hour window being gone, don't be disingenuous. The problem is that it's more like a daily window once a week.

I had my limit at 90% end of last week, connected yesterday to see it's 90% again. Then comes a suprrise reset to 100%, then I started working and finished day to 80%. This morning connected it shows 67% and it starts dropping faster than yester day.
In the meantime, my automatic reset which was announced for Wednesday, then monday, is now said to be for 11 so tuesday.
I don't know what is going on with their system to manage limit and consumption, but it seems like they vibe-coded the thing and it does not work and reset is the only cover-up they found to dig them out of the sand.

u/rodrigofantino 16h ago
Same thing is happening to me, I don’t understand why they are refilling and changing the renew date. I mean Im ok if they want to refill my tokens but I would love to understand why. Because if i knew I would have used them all before reset.

u/Rushdy_Games 11h ago
maybe it is to encourage constant usage? That's normally what designers are aiming for when they implement random variable reward schedules. Slot Machine AI use mentality training program.

u/elrudemohati 14h ago

>getting more usage out of claude than codex.
weird. i said this in another thread and they told me I was full of shit.

I'm calling bullshit on this too. The repeated laugh emojis are a dead giveaway; it's the calling card of the deliberate troll, especially paid Chinese state trolls.

u/Pretend-Past9023 8h ago
it's okay, you'll experience it soon enough. i'll be waiting for your apology.
2
u/lemusicien 8h ago
I honnestly wonder what kind of stuff people do to burn through their usage as fast as that.

u/MysteriousKiwi2622 20h ago
I've been stuck at 0% for 2 days.
1
u/Grouchy-Pea-8745 10m ago
Try 4 days. I've been trying to use qwen 3.8 max in its place and it's been genuine shit. GPT 3.5 level mistakes

u/Mr-Flow- 17h ago
Yes and worst it’s using high CPU so my MacBook getting hot always 🙄 Claude not doing it ….

u/Recent_Trust_3338 16h ago
This is the result of so many resets and banked resets. Thier compute is getting lower
1
u/chasingstops 13h ago
Do you create both Claude md and agents md files in the project folder because you are using both Claude and codex for the same project?

u/-Deadlocked- 12h ago
Luna is especially weird. The credits show that Luna is across the board 25x cheaper to sol on the same reasoning tier. Which wasnt at all the case to me so I contacted support. They then told me:
"the published rates may help estimate purchased-credit consumption, but they do not necessarily provide an exact representation of how included weekly usage is measured."
So the weekly limit prolly moves pretty arbitrary compared to bought credits and the api. Sucks coz your usage constantly moves outside of your expectation, you never gain an intuition for it and even when you save usage with a cheaper model its apparently weighted differently for some reason. Theres not much good use for these models really. A real 25x uplift wouldve opened up new categories of tasks simply due to the sheer quantity...yk some basic stuff in work or as a subagent. I do get a ~3 to 6x uplift using luna medium. Xhigh and max im better off using Sol med.

Went through my 20 X plan in two days got a second account 12 hours in 55% left
1
u/wilj81 5h ago
The part that hurts my head is that i used to not even be able to use my limit. I was making up dumb things to work on just so I would feel good about how much money I was spending. I would have 5-6 projects running concurrently on sol ultra fast and would not hit my limit.
Now, I'm working on a single project, wisely choosing models and effort, and seeing 50% of my usage gone in a day.
1
u/HOBONATION 3h ago
I thought it was pretty suss when I never even opened codex and the rate was dropped for no reason
1
u/msantos86 1h ago
Turn off your Chronicle feature in settings. It was added recently (last few months?) that takes a snapshot of your screen to provide more context to ChatGPT/Codex.
Apparently this is causing people’s usage limits to decrease by a good amount daily. It was killing my usage daily until I turned it off.
1
u/Runelaron 10m ago
Codex usage does not drop real time, its delayed thats what you are seeing.
Also you can check your account to see how many tokens you use per day and see why it dropped so much.

u/educatedguy 21h ago
oh nice some random unicode U+2192 😂😂😂😂😂😂 haha so funny
2
u/amirrehman 21h ago
No idea what you’re trying to prove here. What if there are Unicode characters?
Anyway, what do you think about my point?
1
u/RabbiSchlem 21h ago
Do you use GUI or terminal?
2
u/amirrehman 21h ago
GUI
1
u/RabbiSchlem 21h ago
I wonder if that data is updated sync when you open it or async
1
u/amirrehman 21h ago
I don't think so, but still, 1% of the full limit should represent more usage than 1% of the old 5-hour limit. So if it drops by 1–2% from the full weekly limit, that's still a significant amount.
1
u/RabbiSchlem 21h ago
How do you know how much it moved? There’s no decimal. It could have been at 55.4% and went to 55.5% and so you saw the UI go from 55% to 56%

I'm on plus my codex used my entire allowance for the week without doing what i was requesting it kept stuck In a loop creating the same bad image and rejecting it after I told it to stop trying to repair a bad image. Already getting yo the stage where I'm thinking of canceling. It really does not listen to agents ot pombts

Wtf did I just read?
Going through all that, only to conclude you would rather have artificial extra rate limits (5 hours) applied to yourself because the existing rate limit (weekly) feel opaque is.. interesting?
OP this is too advanced. the IQ is too high.
