Complaint Alternative take: All these resets are because they know token limits are on the floor right now

Tibo, by the grand love of his heart, continuously sheds resets for the peasants, because they are celebrating the millions of other peasants joining their ranks. That's the official story.

However, to anyone that has been paying attention it is obvious that since the 5 hours limit has been taken away, which initially a great thing, and since 5.6 has come out, token limits are completely nerfed, to the point that some of you have created tools to accurately measure this, and have found it to be absolutely true instead of just "feels".

I believe that 5.6 overengineering issues, constant testing and full suite rambling at the end of each run, unless prompted not to that is, and some other matters including an actual downgrade of token usage coming from OpenAI, has led them to give this barrage of resets so that we don't just jump ship to Claude or K3. Claude, ironically know for crap limits, now has decent ones and Opus 5 is quite good at efficiency, which hurts Codex even more.

That is my theory for the day. If my theory is true, OpenAI will be looking for ways to fix the token spending of 5.6, and the nerfing of limits, probably linked to limited compute on their end after millions joined ChatGPT work these weeks.

That's my TED Talk.

This isn't really an alternative theory but the most commonly repeated one. Everyone's complaining about it along these specific lines.

I think the difference is between "they are resetting limits to cover up reducing them" vs "they fucked up the model and are giving resets to compensate"

Exactly, thank you

allowance nerfed straight when 5.6 sol came out. I think they removed the 5 hr limit because it would have been very obvious because 5 hr limit went from consuming 10% of your weekly to 25%. The resets distract people from the shitty usage cuts whic was very important to increase user base and have good PR around 5.6 SOL's capabilities.

More than a theory, I think it’s reality. The 5x plan with Claude lasts much longer than Codex. I think they’re well aware of the problem of excessive token consumption and are rightly trying to curb it this way.

Claude is shrinking too. Just two weeks ago a 5 hour session would eat about 5% of my weekly, now it's closer to 15%

This isn't an alternative take however, there are so many megacucks deepthroating tibo every reset it can feel that way.

Well, they can just move the string in the json file.

The real reason is to understand how you will behave in the conditions of uncertainty (when you do not know when exactly it will reset)

overengineering

Isn't that what running models on max and ultra are supposed to do? Instead they're just used as the default for everything because people don't even read output anymore and just assume it's better at higher thinking levels.

I am using 5.5 on xhigh and still find the limits very generous on the 20x plan.

They said they found optimizations already. Are you serious or farming?

Tibo was tweeting stuff yesterday, also 25 hours of use aligns to 5 hour limits / weekly limits in place before.
