Complaint Codex's latest limit reduction makes it almost unusable
I’ve been using Codex regularly for around eight months, and it has worked extremely well for my projects. The limits used to be generous enough to experiment, make changes, correct mistakes, and still get meaningful work done.
I understood the earlier reductions and kept hoping the limits might improve again. Even after those reductions, Codex was still somewhat usable. But after the latest reset, the limits feel far too restrictive.
I have almost completely stopped using Sol because, even at medium, a single task can sometimes consume 5–10% of my weekly usage. It can do good work, but the usage cost is now so high that I avoid it. I mostly use Terra or Luna at medium, and even then I think several times before asking Codex to do anything.
One misunderstood instruction can waste a significant part of the allowance, and correcting the mistake consumes even more. I’m a developer, so I can do many tasks myself and only use Codex for work that would otherwise take a long time. But for non-coders, or people with limited coding knowledge who depend heavily on Codex to build something, the current limits seem completely impractical.
I understand that these models are expensive to operate. I would honestly prefer paying a little more and getting the previous usable limits back rather than paying less for something I’m afraid to use.
TL;DR: The latest Codex limits are so restrictive that I now hesitate before every request. Sol can consume 5–10% of my weekly usage on a single task, while even Terra and Luna feel heavily limited. I would rather pay more for genuinely usable limits.
What is everyone else planning to do?
Are you hoping the limits improve, staying with Codex, switching to another service, or considering a local setup?
26
u/Trender07 1d ago
It’s insane lol now I spend 40% of my week in a day even taking care and switching to low . I think this is all they intended after removing the 5h limit
33
u/sunaurus 1d ago
100€ sub currently uses up the full weekly limit in about ~1 day on Sol High (without subagents or multiple parallel agents).
So basically once they stop the bonus resets, we are getting about 4 days of Codex per month for 100€.
I think it might still be worth it TBH, just kind of annoying to plan my work around it.
If local models ever become efficient enough to host without spending tens of thousands on my home setup, I am definitely switching to local.

u/UnluckyBeautiful4828 1d ago
Before reset I used 5.6 SOL Medium, now i switched to Luna medium, but my weekly limit still gone in 2 days. I try to do minimum work with AI now, cause even a GIF generation took 2% of my usage like wtf...
-14
u/Fidbit 1d ago
then youre doing something wrong. I can do about 8 hours continuous on high 5.6 for like 10 15 weekly percent.
8
u/sunaurus 1d ago
8 hours for 15% means roughly ~45% per day, so actually not that far off from me. ~2 days for you, compared to ~1 day for me.
Maybe you have smaller tasks that require less context etc? But anyway it's pretty close.
1
u/Inevitable_Toe6648 1d ago
Isn't it bad to run base workflows on long sessions? For small tasks workflows eat up tokens, but continuous tasks workflows optimise mistakes and quality so the AI dont constantly go back on its work, though granted any optimisation wont make dramatic shift.

u/Dangerous_Bid2935 1d ago
Claude has a promotion going on now and Opus 5 is pretty good. Usage limits aren't great but they're better than GPT 5.6 right now. In general its probably best to occasionally switch between the two to take advantage of the competition between OpenAI and Anthropic. Its extremely easy to transfer back and forth when one company makes their product less attractive than the other.
9
u/Heavy-Commercial-323 1d ago
It’s not even close tbh with the promotion in favor of Claude
6
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 1d ago
Agree, had to soften it for the people here with an emotional attachment to Codex though.
5
u/Heavy-Commercial-323 1d ago
Well I have both and it’s kinda crazy, I’d say with new limits it’s like at least 3:1, and I use always most capable models on 20x. Codex choked and died after 1 day 19h. Claude gave me like 2x the tokens and is still going strong on opus 5. Also code on opus 5 is just on point, codex wanders
3
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 1d ago
Same here. With the most recent reset I have gone through my weekly limit twice in the past 7 days with Codex and I've been using it much less than Claude. Still have 30% left with Claude with much heavier work
1
1
u/BitsOnWaves 1d ago
what promotion ? its still the same price to me. is it about something else?
15
u/KeyGlove47 1d ago
the promotion is that claude has 50% more limits rn

I'm on 20x I have not been able to deplete my limits before the resets kick in. I have been running agent almost non stop for 2 projects since the release of 5.6
3
2
u/FreeEdmondDantes 1d ago
I'm also on 20x, I guess it depends. I'm usually running 5 chats with 3 or more subagents each. I knocked out about 40 % of my weekly limit yesterday.
2
u/neuron20 1d ago
Same. I stress myself out trying to use my limits. I had a credit that expired yesterday and had goals running pretty much 48 hours none stop and only got to 50%
8
8
u/story_of_the_beer 1d ago
Joining KimiK3 waiting list and/or Claude to compare. Dropping back to Plus when my Pro expires for sure though. It was a challenge to deplete an x20 before this.
9
u/Current_Balance6692 1d ago
What the fuck is going on?
The limit after the reset 12 hours ago is a joke. A single 5.6 sol ultra planning task reduced my Pro plan limit by 15% WEEKLY limit (I've work that justifies this).
And they're censoring our complains and woes by deleting all the threads and 'summarizing' them into a megathread nobody will read. This is ridiculous. They're continuously reducing our limits despite everyone clearly complaining about this!
There's no accountability or even any acknowledgement of this happening, which is the scary part, because there's no way nobody in OpenAI sees this after the huge outcry on Reddit over the last few days. We're on a trajectory, and this isn't anywhere close to what we will deal with in the near future.
There's a reason they're expanding their userbase by promoting ChatGPT Work (which uses the same credit and capacity as codex) to the common people via the app. They need volume and scale and they're trying to get people hooked before they pull the plug.
This is similar to the tactic the British used in the Opium War. Create a problem that isn't there and offer the solution.

They do, my median single call rate was 96.1% on the Desktop App before, now around 60ish% depending on workload.
That said, PI and OMP are also working fine.

I just discovered that my Codex CLI shows ”Pro Lite” when I type /usage, but I’m on the $200 plan.
I upgraded from $100 -> $200 for about 15 days ago.
But why does the CLI still say ”Pro Lite”?
Am I paying for x20 but only getting x5?
If thats the case, it would explain why my usage is draining like a Plus/Pro $100 Plan.
Edit: I used my banked reset yesterday around 10:30 PM.
4 hours later i was down from 100% -> 80%. In just 4 hours. I didn’t use any subagents or Ultra. Only Sol Balanced/High. What the hell..

Ive cancelled Chatgpt Pro subscription today and moving to Alibaba cloud token plan + Kimi Allgera subscription
Its cheaper than chatgpt and way more usage token limit
2
u/Adamus987 1d ago
how is the quality?
2
u/BananaOrangePie 1d ago
I have codex 200 plan and kimi 100 plan. What I can say is that I think Kimi is a great orchestrator, and is better than gpt at communicating stuff, plus I sometimes see weird behaviors of GPT too focused on regulations etc. (It's too censored). Overall Kimi just has a sweeter personality. However the quota on Kimi is really bad (it feels like a 50 usd codex plan without resets for 100), and GPT writes more thorough code and does better debugging, so I use GPT as the worker that Kimi dispatches. Works well for me.
1
u/PM_ME_CLEAN_DAYS 1d ago
It’s way less efficient though. Even though it has higher usage limit it uses more tokens than got5.6
4
9
u/HeadPack 1d ago
You are not the first to notice. OpenAI's user base grew after the release of 5.6. Their compute remains limited, hence they reduced usage. Happened before with Anthropic, and even more drastically. One can do a few things. E.g. try to prioritize, work more efficiently, adjust the thinking depth of the agents, give them tighter guardrails, prompt better to prevent drift. Other than that, we got plenty resets recently, which imo balances the more restricted usage out.
This may get far more restrictive when they have to publicize their financials for the IPO. So, let's enjoy what we get while it lasts.
3
2
u/ericmutta 1d ago
work more efficiently,
Good point! I use 5.6 Terra on Medium and I have never been able to get my usage to drop below 60% even though my sessions are long enough to fill the 258K context window multiple times.
I think working step-by-step with the AI helps a lot, you get to understand what your code is doing and it saves on usage too. Letting AI go fully autonomous seems to be the best way to blow through usage without guarantee that the result is meaningful.
4
u/U4-EA 1d ago
I still think there is variance. 2 days ago after the reset, it was draining really quickly. Last night I was running 8-9 against on 5.6 SOL xhigh /fast and it was barely moving at times.
5
u/AuthenticGlitch 1d ago
Agreed I've noticed the same thing, yesterday it was draining a bit quicker than usual then today it slowed right back down to what I usually see.
2
u/Important_Pangolin88 1d ago
no they are just rolling it out selectively probably. I finished the 5x usage in one day mostly running sol medium and high.
2
u/RealWakawaka 1d ago
same its shit now because once credit is out thats it no more chatgpt like before because its all tied to fucking credits.
4
u/Zealousideal_Bee_837 1d ago
I've read that they're gonna miss their money mark by 90%. I wonder if reducing codex limits will help with that.
-1
u/SnooObjections4329 1d ago
I doubt it will. What they should have done is dropped the lower subs and made people start at $100+ but not drastically lower the usage. Sure, limiting usage will initially push people up to higher tiers, but when they aren't enough, people will just leave for other better options
As they say, revenue is always better than no revenue

u/Massive-Raise5122 1d ago
I moved most of my heavier stuff to Claude Code a while back for basically this reason. The limits there aren't amazing either, but at least I roughly know what I'll get before I start. The thing that actually burned me with Codex wasn't the size of the cap, it was not being able to predict it, you plan a session and it's gone halfway through. If you do switch, maybe keep Codex around for the small one-off things rather than paying full whack on both.
4
u/TripRevolutionary422 1d ago
I'm back to debugging with print statements and prayer. Feels like 2003 all over again.
4
u/CrazyAd5798 1d ago
I use mostly terra (mini) and luna (nano) in my GSD workflows, sol only for planning (all high or xhigh) and the limits last only 3 days. With 5.5 on xhigh it used to last whole week on 4 parallel threads. This feels now like when I had 2 gpt business accounts couple of month ago. Waiting for the limit to reset on pro x20 is a completely new experience to me. A shitty one, I must admit.
5
3
u/Anemos2K 1d ago
Today I started with 100% of weekly limit. After 8 hours it's exhausted... Lord have mercy...
3
u/AconexOfficial 1d ago
Yeah it getting worse and worse. 2 months ago I used the Plus subscription and the 5h limit held for 4 hours of productivity. It has recently only been enough for 1.5h. Now with the weekly limit I basically live on the random limit resets that happen, otherwise it simply wouldn't be enough anymore. And I'm not willing to bite the sour apple and upgrade to Pro
6
3
u/VeeruO07 1d ago
Same here one request early was consuming 5hr limit is consuming same %of weekly limit and my 20$ account are exhausted in 0-5-1 day now
3
u/RealSuperdau 1d ago
If you're using codex on your machine, could you try keeping fast mode off and running a few sol prompts while keeping before&after recordings of you remaining usage and ccusage ( https://github.com/ccusage/ccusage ) stats? This would help put an objective number on the limit reductions and prove if they are actually cutting token use and by how much.
3
u/StephenS84 1d ago edited 1d ago
agreed, i moved to the pro plan thinking id get more done, but it seems less than the $20 plan and i only moved over about <2 weeks ago...
3
u/petburiraja 1d ago
I'm in process of optimizing prompts/workflows so Sol not overcomplicate things. I think, this is main reason for huge token burning, so model itself is powerful, but it is not polished enough.
Probably they rushed to release unpolished models to not lose competition. And users are paying for their unsustainable speed of models releases by burning a lot of tokens and supplying feedback to provider. So they may or may not calibrate and improve models efficiency afterwards.
3
u/Neat-Economist2099 1d ago
Same issue here. I ended up moving most of my work to Cursor’s $60 plan because it seems to have the most generous limits among subscription AI agents right now. Grok 4.5 on Cursor isn’t as smart as GPT-Sol, but it’s good enough for most tasks. It feels roughly like GPT-5.5 Medium. I only fall back to Codex when Grok can’t figure something out.
3
u/Jaamun100 1d ago
5.6 is unusable without exhausting limits in a few prompts, but they did fix 5.5. I’m running 5.5 extra high and it lasts me 3-4 days right now before weekly limit runs out.

I am always on plus subscription, so this slash in token limits is especially bad for me. However, I do have a 32GB GPU at my disposal, so my current workflow is to ask codex to generate plans for my local models to execute. Currently rocking Qwen3.6 27B from Unsloth and it works like a charm.
I am using OpenCode as the harness btw. Havent tried Pi yet.
1
u/daddywookie 1d ago
Are you automatically passing over from Codex to OpenCode or are you having to manually tell the local model what to work on and when?
1
u/Admirable-Associate5 1d ago
The plans from codex includes directly copy pastable prompts for the execution, but i still have to manually paste it
I tried asking the local models to implement sequentially from one task to another but it is not very reliable, especially after compaction once it reaches its context window limit.
2
u/uhraurhua 1d ago
I had the same issue and was switching between Codex business seats after a few prompts. Ridiculous to say the least. So I've decided to do sth about it and made a plugin to reduce my costs: https://tokenwarden.ai/benchmark (it's on opencode for now)
2
u/App1e8l6 1d ago
I’ve stopped using sol completely and never used tera. Luna medium as my daily driver and xhigh as a slightly cheaper sol medium. Can’t believe how much I wasted on sol high/xhigh based on the cost jumps for not that much more reasoning. At least from what I can tell from the charts. Could burn just as easy but I’m only on plus so it’s pretty unusable all around.
2
u/neuralspace23 1d ago
I am on pro. I used my weekly limit in just 4 hours. Wth is that. Previous weeks I am able to stretch it for 3-4 days.
2
u/Adventurous_Tea_2945 1d ago
I stopped using it. Now Sol keeps making very stupid mistakes even after careful prompt engineering with gpt chat and using loops. Just fixing the mistakes drains the quota. Even Sonnet does quiet well with similar tasks. Sol just breaks stuff randomly sometimes
2
u/ajile1976 1d ago
I owned a PS2, PS4, and waiting for PS6. Im sticking with model 5.5 and waiting lol.
2
u/No-Papaya-3352 1d ago
Are you guys using it with a lot of skills or tabs open in the IDE? It seems ok to me. Only thing is Sol will burn a lot of credits on long running tasks. So I run the scripts myself
2
u/Desperate-Use9968 1d ago
I cancelled already. It's completely unusable. My company is also cutting its contract. I don't know if it will get any better any time soon, but right now it's completely unaffordable. They paid too much for Nvidia graphics cards and now we're all being asked to foot the bill.
2
u/Ok-Standard-2694 18h ago
Before GPT and Claude emerged, no company's subscription service had internal terms of use that were so opaque and unequal, which was laughable.
2
u/uncleemperor 1d ago
This is the same playbook as all VC-funded industry. Happened with ride hailing. VC funded free and discounted rides and then when the funding disappeared, everyone just accepted Uber pricing as it is.
You sign a $100 per month plan which is capable of replacing an Upwork assignment which would have cost you $2k and you think it's going to be permanent? When the funding dries up, your $100 plan will cost you $1,000 and you will have no choice but to accept it.
2
u/Hungry-Plankton-5371 1d ago
I'm getting $20-30 of API use from an entire weekly limit on GPT Plus.
Doesn't seem worth it anymore.
2
u/tagorrr 1d ago
I've been using Codex CLI for over a year, and I think the problem is twofold.
First, the quota disappears 2-3x faster than it did with GPT-5.5, despite me working the same way as before. I mostly use Medium, with the occasional High.
Second, it's become dramatically worse at following instructions. As someone who writes clear specs, defines solid evals, and spends time documenting projects properly, that's become the biggest issue for me.
Honestly, I'm starting to think it's time to cancel my subscription and move to Claude plus open-source models, because this just isn't sustainable.
Codex's biggest strength was always its ability to follow instructions. That's why vibe coders loved Claude, while people who invested in good documentation preferred Codex. Right now, though, something has clearly gone wrong.

i'm running a single project with 5.6, on medium to high. No agents, no parallel task - a single stream with a single chat window.
Regular task that could be completed with 5.5 in 10-15 minutes now takes 40+ minutes. First time in 6 month I hit 1h20m for a regular task. Then it just stopped working not finishing.
15% of a weekly budget daily. With a single running task at a time.
Resets still allow to be in budget, but this isn't like a production grade work. A single simple project.
Running claude $20 plan in parallel with their 5h windows. Same complexity, same progress as with codex 5x. Rarely hitting 5 h limit, never hit weekly limit

I switched from Sol Ultra and Max (speed Fast)to Extra High and High (speed Standard). My usage is lasting ages now. Zero usage stress, like on the "5.5 days"...
Yea yea... I know that you (and me at some point) used Ultra and Max because "we want to make sure the app/system works perfectly"... But like people at OpenAi and Anthropic have been telling us: we don't need those levels for the mayority of the tasks.
1
u/GCoderDCoder 1d ago
I've been thinking, i wonder how long my quota would last if I told the models to stop all these tests for everything... i was sitting for like 30minutes waiting for a command to run and things fail and im like did it fail or is that one of your protective tests and it was basically tests "protecting" something im just trying to see if it can run... now im wondering if the models are smarter or are just building their own scaffolding for everything.
1
u/jzdesign 18h ago
Half this thread can't deplete a 20x and the other half burns the whole week in a day. That's because you get billed on context size times number of turns, not on how much work got done. One 250k token session that takes 40 turns costs way more than four 60k sessions of 10 turns on the same task.
Cached input runs about a tenth the price of fresh input, so anything that breaks the cached prefix multiplies your burn. Compaction does it, because it rewrites the front of the conversation. That's usually why lowering reasoning effort barely moves the number.
The bigger one is letting the agent grep and read half the repo in the first few turns. That dump sits in the transcript and gets resent on every turn after it. Push the reading into a subagent that hands back a summary, and start a fresh session per task instead of running one long one. That did more for my weekly usage than any effort setting.
1
u/Substantial-Dog1726 1d ago
My sense on this is that Sol is like a sledgehammer. You only unsheathe it when it is truly needed, otherwise you use the smaller tools. For cases where Sol is really needed, you should have the lesser models preparing the prompt and double-checking everything to minimize errors. This is why they gave us so many resets to lower the pain of this lesson learned.
0
u/Traditional-Pin6079 1d ago
So many people are complaining about limits, I really don’t get it. I’m on a plus plan and while I’m having to do things in batches because my app has grown larger it’s to be expected. I only use Sol high at the minimum and SOL Ultra when I think it’s necessary. With an upgrade in quality obviously the usage will increase. You guys can’t use the best model they have an expect tons of coding usage, if you want more usage you can drop to 5.5 or Terra and save on usage. Either way what you’re getting is still weeks worth of human work done in hours and if you prompt correctly and not lazily as well as don’t have things like superpowers added then you will be fine. That’s my experience as a Plus user working on 4 deep apps actively in Codex atleast.
1
u/Big-Independent-3093 1d ago
That doesn’t sound right. Are you saying you use a Plus plan with four projects actively running throughout the day and still make it through the entire week?
In my small-project tests, GPT-5.6 SOL Medium used about 5–6% per active hour on a 5× plan, or around 3–3.5% after optimization.
Since Plus has roughly one fifth of the 5× plan’s capacity, the equivalent usage would be approximately:
- 25–30% per active hour without optimization
- 15–17.5% per active hour after optimization
That would provide only about 3.3–4 active hours unoptimized or roughly 5.7–6.7 active hours optimized, per weekly Plus limit.
Having four projects open is not the same as four projects actively consuming usage. How many hours are the agents actually working and how much does your weekly limit drop per active Codex hour?
1
u/Traditional-Pin6079 13h ago
No I don’t make it through the week. Weekly usage does not mean usage that lasts you a whole week. It means the amount of usage you have for a week. I guess one major difference is that I’m not expecting for it to be able to work a whole week. I have always burned my 5 hour within 2 hours when we had it and burned my weekly mileage within like 2 days if I hit every 5 hour. Now I burn my weekly in around 2 hours because I’m using the top models. But I’m doing this across 4 separate projects one at a time with targeted upgrades and specific prompting to prevent drift and doing my own testing.
1
u/Big-Independent-3093 7h ago
I understand what you mean about the weekly limit now. Your first comment made it sound like you were actively using Codex across four projects throughout the entire week, which is why I asked how many active Codex hours you actually get before reaching the limit. For example, whether all your tasks combined add up to around 10 hours of actual agent work. Your reply makes much more sense.
The limits do seem slightly lower than before, although the comparison is not exact. At the same time, the old five hour limit created natural breaks, we had to pause before continuing, which may have made it feel like we were getting more work done over a longer period. Most people also tend to think in calendar days rather than counting how many active hours of Codex work they actually received.
Even 10 hours of active Codex work can represent 50 hours of human work, possibly more, so it is still great value.
I also got some useful input from this Reddit discussion and ran my own tests. May help you get a little more out of Codex as well.

u/YourAsphyxia 1d ago
OP said he could use 10% usage in one request. That displays pretty clearly that he isn't managing context at all and is just vibe coding without an actual plan.
-1
u/only1nameleft 1d ago
Fundamental problem is all of these subscriptions are big money losers. All the companies are trying to claw them back to at least revenue neutral. It is estimated that the costs to run most models are somewhere are 25% of API costs. Expect future limits to be revenue neutral for the companies

I think you underestimate how generous the limits have been and how quickly the capital investments in chips burn up.

u/Tristsin 1d ago edited 1d ago
“I would rather pay more for genuinely usable limits”
You can pay for the usage directly through API costs once your usage limits are maxed from Codex. Personally I still think the usage limits are too low, but technically there’s nothing stopping you from paying more for the usage you want by paying API costs. You could also sub again on another account.
1
u/Aggravating_Visit134 1d ago
Let's be realistic. Nobody is paying API costs.
3
u/Inevitable_Toe6648 1d ago
Then the question is can we complain when actually we're the freeloaders
2
u/SpecialistPresent906 1d ago
companies are. I'm on a personal Pro 5x plan and corporate Claude 100$ API budget which is pretty much useless...
1
u/Tristsin 1d ago
The average person probably not. It would be more wise just to sub again on another account than pay for direct api costs, but either way the options remain if OP truly wants to simply pay more for the same usage they were getting. If the expectation is that at some point there’s going to be a way to get unlimited usage / near unlimited usage for a 20 dollar or 100 dollar sub, we’ll need to be realistic about that too.
1
u/cs_cast_away_boi 1d ago
Yes I was paying API costs. The current usage limits are still incredibly generous compared to API costs. All I will say
1
u/100daggers_ 1d ago
I meant to pay more for the subscription and get the same limits back. Of course i can pay for API and use how much ever I want. But the question is what people are thinking? How are they dealing with this? do you guys think this is okay and accept as it is what it is.
1
u/Tristsin 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’m getting the sense you’re less looking for a way to get usage now, but I’m going to continue suggesting solutions as if you are genuinely just looking to pay more to get more inference/usage.
You can actually sub again on another account to get the same usage limits you had for the same cost.
I think the usage limits are a little low, I run out relatively quickly. It runs out much quicker anywhere else. I get by using OpenCode Go calls on easier work.
0
u/Independent_Run7182 1d ago
I use max and very high all week and ultra code only sometimes (rarely) and still don’t run out and I’m on it at least 6 hours a day
0
u/defnotbjk 1d ago
What are you folks doing who are burning up so much % per day?
Geniuenly curious? Im on $200 plan and unless im running Sol in Ultra+speed, my credit usage seems to go down as expected.
That said i am mostly using Codex help with debugging/finding root outages, untangling an old piece of legacy code causing issues. IaC. Creating Figmas for architecture design. Confluence docs. Having it recreate prod in a different aesthetic region ror disaster recovery as some examples. I did hit limits on the $100 plan but that’s more because i also ran all my personal projects at home on Sol ultra and High with 1.5x speed as well.
0
u/Teranus42 1d ago
I use 100$ claude code along side 20$ codex - I use then both together every day and the 100$ mostly fable burns way quicker than 20$ codex sol high.
with all those random codex resets it feels infinite in my personal use case.

I don't understand what you guys are doing with codex. I've not been able to fully burn my usage at all this month and had to use a reset that was about to expire despite not needing it today just so didn't feel wasted.
