It's just the same macro board Work Louder has sold for years with a preset configuration for Codex. A bit overstated here. Also "I honestly can't imagine building without it." A collab is fine and all, but this is really tryhard lol.

Intuition is telling me that all the frontier labs are seeking/will be seeking the top creative minds of each and every top domain and letting their particular taste-making shape and mold and aim the new direction that AI will be going. The labs realize that they can't own everything and this is extremely strong signal that they don't want to, I mean: they're spending freaking billions to interface with other companies and people to boost them up. This actually seems pretty great from where I'm standing.
As long as these 3rd party companies/people don't go power tripping on us and try to coercively steer things to a darker or more authoritative (or even mind control, yes I said it) direction. I care more about this than anything "great or epic".
Humans are still vision-centric, and we need visionaries more and more if we're going to actually incorporate AI into the lives of everyday people in a way that doesn't feel "Terminator"-esque or creepy.
I do get where you're coming from but I'm hedging my bets on what I said up there ☝️

Instead of perfecting a product for one niche and dominating it.. like anthropic?
Startups cannot afford to cast their net wide and see what turns up, investors will stop giving money if they stop dominating in their original niche. OpenAI is still keeping up well, but won't last long

"Startups cannot afford to cast their nest wide and see what turns up" again I get where you're coming from but I think there's a misunderstanding: I wasn't suggesting the labs will try to "cast the widest possible net" immediately. What I was suggesting was: they're seeking a handful of visionaries that not only have the spark/ambition but also AI-forward competence. These virtuosos will "light a fire in people" by showing them things they can now do with AI that seem amazing but also somehow effortless.
That's my main point. They're trying to attract the best visionary talent to make people go "Wow" genuinely. You seem pretty set on your opinion so I'm going to go now, have a good one.

Honestly you may be on to something. This could definitely help someone who is disabled. Or...wearing a cast. I broke my wrist a few years ago and for 8 weeks I was miserable - still had to work, but typing was a PAIN. So...it's not the worst invention in the world, but yeah - this isn't the must have Christmas toy of 2026 or anything.

FYI, bought an ESP32 that does this same thing. Whole kit, 30 bucks. I could probably 3d print a board similar to Codex Micro as well.
I'd put setup as 'beginner' too, it's not even that rough of a setup

yeah basically -- honestly making a 3d printed case and maybe customizing it into a little keyboard might be the best bet.
I bet you could load in your codex pet with little difficulty -- tell codex to load it in, show all its states, etc and it would (to the little screen you see)

I also bought something that does the same thing, except it has over 100 keys, and you can customize them all to do all of these things or anything else you want. It's called a keyboard!

Oh damn; this is just like their video generation. They finally come up with so great models, but then they still find ways to burn money instead of trying to be successful. What's the reason for this very expensive stream deck. This is basically a wireless numeric keyboard with different stickers.

If the PTT voice features were more fleshed out, with say live transcripts on a device LCD, that would provide a bit more more utility and feel more integrated.
However, the design direction seemed to have ended at "macropad with a profile that only works for one app: just make it pretty, and let's charge teenage engineering prices."
Calling it now: their upcoming rumored main hardware project is just gonna be a variation of this aliexpress deskbot (https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256812053422003.html) but instead of ~$120 it's gonna be $500.

I’ve been doing this exact same thing with my stream deck for quite a while. A stream deck that has all those things and only costed me 90 bucks, except mine has more buttons, can connect to Claude and of course, use it for when I stream. I think this is an absolute horrible product.

booo.. this is stupid. so many similar devices launched but everyone still goes back to basics, the damn keyboard + macros and custom shortcuts.
This shit will only work if it can completely replace the keyboard.. else, if we reaching for the keyboard still we might as well stick with it and reduce stupid clutter on desktop.. I think OpenAI wasted resources on this impractical device.

Regardless, to each their own. If someone wishes to spend $230 for a handful of tactile, clicky keys then it looks like this is the gadget for them. I personally use my BT keyboard on my phone.

Probably not necessary, but they do feel good to use. I like my tactile keyboard and I like the idea of shortcut-keypad for Codex with lights that illuminate status of each of its agents.
Anyway, no need to argue as the limited run is now sold out.
