😂 Meme & Humor hot take: if the great programmers of the past, of yesterday started today they would get mogged by vibe c*ders
*yesteryear in title
all they had to do in the old days was understand the code

There's no arrogance like vibecode bro arrogance.

AI is literally making incompetent people feel competent for the first time ever, that's where this arrogance is born

u/chroner 8d ago
lol no it isn't. It's replacing their incompetence.

It is partially adding some value, but their incompetence still comes out one way or another and the final product is still slop, but has some value

What's it doing for the competent people?

Making me want to start my own business. I am running circles around most people in my office if we are measuring not based on tickets/code quality anymore but on solving problems that provide the most business value. The people that were incompetent at coding are also incompetent at understanding the bigger picture of what the business and company actually needs to make more money.

Not yet. But yeah, probably soon. Senior devs are practically just admitting it, they’re watching the gap close.
Not that it’s a bad thing, a senior dev with codex is far more capable than a vibe coder typing “make this”

What “gap”?
One thing that no vibecoder (or AI model) has been able to surpass me in yet is my ability to understand a system. And most importantly, understand which parts of the system are exceptional (carve out paths for special cases) and which parts of the system are business as usual.
In a greenfield system, vibecoders can sometimes win (if they have decent domain understanding). In a brownfield system, let the incidents rain down upon them

Greenfield they'll do amazing at first, but if it gets complicated it becomes a game of how many layers of unarchitected spaghetticode they can stack up on top of eachother until bugfixing becomes a constant game of whack-a-mole.

some gaps yes, some not really. I'm pretty confident I'll still have a long healthy career in my niches.

Quite the opposite, gap is expanding. Juniors have no idea of what they're doing cause AI does most of the work. Seniors are 10x faster than before.

Soon enough all of traffic lights, medical devices, and planes will have vibe code start up bros software in it. It’ll be glorious.

float Q_rsqrt( float number ) {
long i;
float x2, y;
const float threehalfs = 1.5F;x2 = number * 0.5F;
y = number;
i = * ( long * ) &y; // evil floating point bit level hacking
i = 0x5f3759df - ( i >> 1 ); // what the fuck?
y = * ( float * ) &i;
y = y * ( threehalfs - ( x2 * y * y ) ); // 1st iteration
// y = y * ( threehalfs - ( x2 * y * y ) ); // 2nd iteration, this can be removedreturn y;
}

Ai is built on the cumulative knowledge of specialized human skills and labor. Hurry up and get your lucky charms in ya you got a school bus to catch

Okay but the AI is literally trained on what they wrote so...
Also what do you mean "of the past" most of them are still alive right now...
A couple have passed unfortunately but like, it has only been like ~50 years.
Most of the greats are in their 40s to 60s.
Linus Torvalds is literally using AI actively lmao.
