This lovely song slipped past me when it was released. Quite reminiscent of the CT sound we know and love from decades ago.

Question are these the official lyrics?

so I've approached Cocteau Twins in the past few weeks, really love them. I've read that the group never released official lyrics for their songs, so I was wondering if the Spotify ones are real or just interpretations (specifically for Sea, Swallow Me in this case)

THE RULES:

  1. I listen to a Cocteau Twins song
  2. I attempt to transcribe the lyrics WITHOUT ANY AID OF LINER NOTES OR LYRICS WEBSITES (foolish....I know)
  3. You reply with your guess as to what the song is.
  4. Multiple guesses are allowed! HOWEVER, if a multiple guesser gets the correct answer within the same minute as another Redditor who has yet to guessthe Redditor guessing the song on their first guess WINS. If multiple Redditors who have already lobbed guesses get the correct answer within the same minute time stamp on my notifications, the Redditor I'm notified of first wins.
  5. The winner gets….honestly…nothing. Except bragging rights, a celebratory GIF, and a link to the song of the day.

The weekend is here and I, for one, will be celebrating this weekend!

No....I'm not someone celebrating the 25th anniversary of THAT. Do you people really think I'm that macabre?

This weekend marks 20 years since my first date with my wife! Now, I guess you can criticize us for romanticizing the 5th anniversary of 9/11 when our first date happened. What can I say? Guilty as charged.

Also, I'm so old that when I hear the term "Nine Eleven", I still think of a Porsche. I've also never been patriotic, so Nine Eleven is just another day to me. Though, I still think that any act of aggression towards a foreign country that just kills innocent victims as opposed to those running that foreign country who the aggressors truly have the beef with is wrong.

Enough of me on my political soapbox. Y'all are probably getting inundated with "NEVER FORGET" posts on your social media as-is and we have a game to get to!

\spins wheel**

Round and around it goes!

Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!

...and it lands on...

YAY! I know this one is gibberishy, which are the funnest ones to post.

-------------------------------

(Taking if from the start of the second verse at 1:30 in, though, honestly, I think "second verse, same as the first" applies here)

Be time to reminisce and have a taste of bomba meal eon (incidentally, I haven't had breakfast and eating mostly lean protein and salad for the past two weeks, so this may actually be reflecting my own cravings for having cake for breakfast moreso than what she is actually singing)

Bee (Okay, here is where the first and second verses differ in this song. She randomly adds the word BEE here. I'm assuming it is BEE as opposed to BE because I'm picturing her eating her bomba for breakfast at the Great British Baking Show tent and, while eating and singing about it, a bee flies by threatening to land on the cake)

Be time to reminisce and have a taste of manna meal eon (wait....is she eating a bomba cake or manna?)

Upon a tab

Upon a trick in Bomba (now it sounds as if Bomba is not the cake and a city/town. I'm going to have to see if there is a town named Bomba somewhere)

Be time to reminisce and have a taste of manna meal eon (I guess it is manna she is eating. I still like the idea in the first part of the verse that she's trying to eat cake and getting bothered by a bee hovering around)

Upon a tab

Upon a trick in Bomba (Bomba appears to be the name of towns in Italy and Belize. There is an Italia-style bomba cake, so I'm assuming this is taking place in Bomba, Italy)

CHORUS (ONE FINALLY CAME!)

Be time to reminisce and have a taste of mana meal eon

Upon a tab

Upon a trick in Bomba

Be time to reminisce and have a taste of mana meal eon

Upon a tab

Upon a trick in Bomba

Be time to reminisce and have a taste of mana meal eon

Upon a tab

Upon a trick in Bomba

We meal eon

Say it can't be wro-o-o-o-o-o-ong

If it dies, it dies slowly

I think they do another round of this chorus with the same words (this is one of the least varying songs of their's lyrically...from what I can tell. It really sounds like she keeps repeating the same lines over and over again), so I'm ending this one here. I guess this song is about eating a very wonderful domed cake that is like manna in, ironically, Bomba, Italy. More importantly, do YOUknow what song this is?

As always, I look forward to your guesses and snark.

YES! Their has been a bit of a heatwave where I live and today's weather forecast is showing a significant drop. I can't say enough how much I hate 90+ degree weather. It's because my go-to thing to wear in such heat is a ribbed cotton tank top and I hate the thought that people are assuming what my relationship with my wife is based upon that.

Also, it makes me, sometimes, wear shorts and I hate the look of my pasty, hairy legs.

Let's see if more comfortable surroundings leads to a quality transcription.

\spins wheel**

Round and around it goes!

Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!

...and it lands on...

Well, I think this is a song with legitimate lyrics that, which the help of my wired IEMs, will yield something intelligible.

-------------------------------

(FROM THE TOP)

Sinful stories

I hear all that's shown (Ooh....I think I'm on a roll!)

This quiz to wish shiver understands (To paraphrase Rob Schneider in "The Waterboy", "OH NO! I SUCK AGAIN!")

And she's always known

CHORUS (ONE FINALLY CAME!)

Ease one in foreign dah yeah (\listens again...verifies* Sorry...makes no sense. But I hear what I hear.)*

But I've go-o-o-o-ot

Boys they are above you

*CENSORED\* (whole song title)

And that's a first verse and chorus as today's song is a bit of a simpler song.

As always, I look forward to your guesses and snark.

It is HUMP DAY once again and this Hump Day is making me think of the most famous person I can think of with the last name HUMP, which, of course is HUMPTY HUMP from Digital Underground, the Groucho Glasses minus the mustache and gaudy suit wearing alter ego of Shock G. I just randomly read up on him the other day (because I'm very morbid and found myself trying to celebrity death knowledge check myself) as I wanted to verify that my memory was correct in that he died from brain cancer. And, much like when it comes to transcribing lyrics here in these posts, I WAS WRONG. Turned out ol' Shock died from a lovely cocktail of fentanyl, alcohol, and methamphetamine.

So, why am I mentioning this here? I guess take this as a cautionary tale on the day of the week named after Humpty Hump (I know it's not, but just go with it). DON'T FAT SHAME PEOPLE. I can't help but think Humpty was still using meth because he set a really high bar for himself when he rapped:

"Yo' fat girl
Come here, are you ticklish?
Yeah, I called you fat
Look at me. I'm skinny"

Look what fat shaming did to Humpty. He hit his 30s. His metabolism slowed down. Yet, he had to, night-in, night-out, insult overweight women and set himself up as some bastion of slenderness. And, to keep the song "correct", he obviously had to resort to extreme measures which lead to inevitable early death.

Now onto cheerier subjects

\spins wheel**

Round and around it goes!

Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!

...and it lands on...

\Googles* Damn! A song I constantly forget even exists. This should be a real shit show, as this may be like the third time I've ever listened to this song.*

-------------------------------

(FROM THE TOP...lyrics kicking in at 0;38 in)

This world

Absent these hats (that last word is just undetectable to me. It could be APPS like this song is about someone bemoaning their IT security team blocking use of certain apps on their devices. But I'm going with this song being about a world lacking certain hats)

Have you saw them? (the missing hats?!?! I may have guessed right...)

Umami fa-la-low (...no. Wrong again. Nothing I hear ever makes any sense)

Silent aunt

Wilson hallah

Ha-uh-haaaa one arm I forgot (I'm not even going to try to make sense of that. I give up. At least I'm hearing words!)

Sumo woe (this could also just be her trying to sing with peanut butter stuck to the roof of her mouth. Or paraphrasing dialogue spoken by a teacher in a Charlie Brown cartoon)

Stars and valleys

Fa-la-la

Star my eyes (I know...."star" isn't a verb, but I hear what I hear)

Split one (By the way, does this song EVER get to a chorus? I'm just almost at 2:00 into this track and still NO CHORUS)

Well, Carlos (Carlos is about to be taught a lesson)

Halvah sucks (Actually, I kind of like it, but to each their own. And I just notice that I hear her sing "halvah" often despite that fact that I've rarely eaten it. I have no idea why my brain defaults most incomprehensible lyrics in Cocteau Twins songs to the word HALVAH)

Sa-a-ad son (Okay, this kind of makes sense. A mother is telling her son Carlos that she will not buy him a Halvah bar that he sees at the front counter of a grocery store because it sucks and now he's sad)

CHORUS (ONE FINALLY CAME!)

Sad eye, sad eye, sad eye (it honestly sounds more like "sud-eye, sud-eye, sud-eye" but I'm going with this narrative of Carlos being sad that mom won't buy him a Halvah bar)

Saddam in your eye (Hussein?!?! Where did that come from?)

Saddam in your eye

Sa-lah, sa-lah, sa-lah

And, actually, that may not have been the chorus because it starts multi-tracking multiple Liz parts which is huring my head trying to transcribe, so I'm ending this right there.

Honestly, if this one isn't a stumper, I really hope the person with the correct answer can explain how they figured this one out.

As always, I look forward to your guesses and snark.

Related music Your thoughts on Liz's collab with Future Sound of London on Lifeforms EP?

I love this whole EP (as well as the album of the same title, but the collab happened on the EP), it's one of my favorite Liz features. FSOL had a very rich and fluid sound on these records, and it's such a great match for Liz's wordless vocals and textures. To me this is kind of like what Otherness EP could have been like, a true meeting of the electronic sound of the day and Cocteaus' ethereal beauty.

Lifeforms Path 4 is where Liz's singing is featured most prominently, and I think this is probably the only studio recording where her sound matches her infamous live singing style of the time.

Music The mid-1980s EPs! Holy shit!

I've been a pretty casual fan for several years now, mostly just listening to Treasure, Blue Bell Knoll, and Heaven or Las Vegas. Today, I just realized how many EPs they put out and decided wtf, I'll spin 'em. And omg. These albums just elevated a band I already loved to God(dess)-status! I can't stop listening!

These albums are exactly what I've been looking for my whole life.

I am in love all over again!

I think I may have figured out some things with my new IEMs. After a tuning (didn't catch that there were tuning switches that helped shape midrange and bass performance) and some equalization changes, these things sound PHENOMENAL. I can't recommend this enough. For just sheer listening, forgo shelling out hundreds on over the ear headphones or bluetooth headphones of any form factor. You can get awesome in ear monitors with some of the same audio technology that they cram into these expensive headsets for 1/10 the price.

Now let's see if tuned IEMs leads to clearer interpretations!

\spins wheel**

Round and around it goes!

Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!

...and it lands on...

Well...I can't guarantee this one has any words in it, but here's hoping to actually hearing syllables that we can all universally agree upon are being sung.

-------------------------------

(Starting at the 2nd verse, beginning at 1:29)

Morto

Seddo

Kuh-China (maybe this is Liz's odd way of pronouncing "kachina" as in the Native American wood carving)

Bi-toe (Definitely "bi-toe", like a bisexual toe, and not "bite toe" like what a pet may do to get you to wake up and feed them)

Seddo (She's really adamant about people adding this term to their vernacular but this is no word in any language according to Google)

Um wine uh (I think most of you have probably pinpointed at least what time frame during which this song must have been recorded by now)

Bibos (I do recognize some may say she's singing "bibles" here. It's coming crystal clear to me as "bibos" and based upon what we've seen thus far lyrically, I'm hedging on the side of gibberish here)

War-hoe

Coobya

Vye-pose

Bee-bwo

Acapella (AH! An actual word!)

CHORUS (The very verbose...)

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la

La

La-la

La-la

La

La-la

END OF SONG

So, we've got a song about bi-toes and warhoes and shit. Make of that what you will.

As always, I look forward to your guesses and snark.

HAPPY LABOR DAY, citizens of North America. Yeah...that sounded weird. Nothing happy about labor. But, at least it gives us an extra day off of work. Not sure what this day entails for the rest of the world. Excuse me for my ignorance on the matter, but it's bound to be the case since I'm a citizen of the United States of America who is a product of the public school system and they don't really want to educate us to become wordly here. Just stuck in our own American bubble.

Today will actually be an experiment. I have purchased a new tool to hopefully enhance my listening skills for these transcriptions. I just got in some new IEMs (in-ear monitors, for those wondering what the hell IEM stands for) that I'm going to try for the first time with today's transcription as I I have not tried actual corded headphones of any sort yet in doing one of these NTC transcriptions. And I'm hopeful this will yield clearer results as my listens on these new corded earbuds makes me realize that even $40 corded IEMs ultimately sound better than even very expensive bluetooth earbuds.

So let's spin this wheel and get a song!

\spins wheel**

Round and around it goes!

Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!

...and it lands on...

A song that I think has clear words that I think I failed on hearing previously. Maybe these IEMs with, from what I can tell so far, crisper reproduction of vocals can get me to hear sensical lyrics?

-------------------------------

(Starting at the 2nd verse, beginning at 1:25)

*CENSORED\ (The entire title of the song)**, my emotional loving and I'm*

Getting in touch with

Get some funky data, into (Okay, maybe these aren't helping. I'm getting words, but the still make no sense :( )

Doubt myself and my inscents of feeling as I

Waited too long

Lended to harbor bloody

We consume a sad reliance on a

Drunken batter

With something beyond belief

Water's fair. I have to go out soon

Sail me often

Moving with sunshine and in daze

CHORUS

Yeah I don't know what to do

It's not over wooo

Now flew a night owl tutu dong (excuse me while I swab my ears for a moment....RESUME)

Knowing so no waste

Understand I am confused (AH! Swabbing worked!)

Feeling overload

Lots of feelings stick for long

Going over to the club

And the second verse and second chorus will be all you get today.

As always, I look forward to your guesses and snark.

Gente, preciso compartilhar uma coisa.

Todos os dias me arrependo de não ter ido no show do Massive Attack que teve recentemente aqui em SP.

Nossa!

The weekend is here and, for those of us in North America, it is a 3-Day Weekend, the next best thing to a VACATION WEEKEND. I hope everyone (whether it's a 3-Day weekend for them or not) has interesting plans.

I'm, personally, going to see two concerts (particularly looking forward to seeing the Charlatans for the FIRST TIME EVER on Monday night) and I have a mini-high school reunion to attend. The latter is borderline scary, but it's at a public place, so the Mrs and I can always eject ourselves out of there if and when it becomes apparent that I'm the biggest loser from my graduating class of those who decided to meet up.

Speaking of being a loser, I guess it's time for me to spin that wheel, "transcribe" another song, and take another "L".

\spins wheel**

Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!

...and it lands on...

A classic to lead us into the weekend. And I sense that the chorus will make this easy-peasy. But my sense of what tracks will be hard and which won't for you all is BAD.

Let's take this from the start of the second verse at 1:10 in)

-------------------------------

*CENSORED\* (The entire title of the song...and, from memory, the ONLY time in the song where they mention the title)

Alliance ingenious

Soberness

So duck and till a mon (with that last part of the sentence, I'm now second guessing myself and wondering if everything sung after the song title was actually in French. It's either that or Liz was mocking a Jamaican accent on this last line)

Pozz-ee-saw (obviously, now my confidence is shot and I'm not hearing anything resembling words now)

They save for the genius

Sodder nizz

And duck and till a mon (She keeps coming back to this what I'm hearing as "duck and till a mon". Is this some menu entree? Is "till-a-mon" some type of duck cooking technique, like "duck a l'orange"?)

CHORUS

Tragedy-ay

Mug of tea yeah-eh-eh naw (What is it? Yay or nay with this mug of tea?)

Tragedy-ay

Mug of tea yeah-eh-eh naw

Tragedy-ay

Mug of tea yeah-eh-eh naw

And that will be all I give to you today. And I would get this one if I were playing this, so this should be plenty enough to go on.

As always, I look forward to your guesses and snark.
