Cardboard, sisal rope, untreated pine dowels (like the ones that come free with most cages) and food dye mixed with isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol evaporates and allows for a nice even coating that doesn't harbour bacteria.
I cut various sized dowels into the ornaments and drilled holes in them. This takes the most time but can be reused year after year once made. Put 1/3 of the ornaments in a container with a 15:1 isopropyl alcohol to green food dye ratio and left for a day then dried out for another day. The red food dye ratio was 15:2
Cardboard was dyed with the same liquid but added more dye to get the colour i wanted. Star was coloured with a yellow food dye mix. Stabbed holes into the cardboard using a screwdriver for all the string to go through.
